since 3ghz is over due by almost a year. i would not be happy unless the new powermacs had either a single 3.5 ghz g5 or dual core 3 ghz

Are you actually looking to buy?

Do you have applications that will not run on a dual 2.5GHz?

Actually Dell sells PC's for under $1500 with 3.6Ghz processors right now.
In desktops 2.7 and 2.8 are very very entry level machines and can be had from Dell starting at $400 range

So yes the Mhz myth will live a very long time.

indeed. just look at the amd athlon 64 3500+. 2.2ghz, yet it is pretty much the same speed as high end 3.0+ ghz p4s. link

then there is the Athlon 64 fx-55 clocked at 2.5 or 2.6 ghz. it kicks the crap out of pretty much every intel has in the p4 line up. which scales as high as 3.8 ghz

slowingly closing in on the intel chips ...ha ha what are the PC people going to say now!

uh, "about friggin' time you caught up?"

don't get me wrong, i LOVE the G5 and Apple, but i get PC envy from time to time. i know all processor speeds have stalled lately, and trying to shoehorn the G5 into a PB has been quite a challenge, but PCs put some cool stuff out there from time to time. i was in CompUSA the other day and was blown away by the LCD on a HP 17" laptop. it was gorgeous. bright, crisp and ultra saturated. how come those really sweet PB screens don't look as good?

[/rant] sorry, just a little envy rearing it's ugly head...

Looking forward to this as the first of many major improvements in the platform!

just incase you weren't been sarcastic..

don't you think the move from g4--> g5 was a major improvement, as well as the move from OS 9 --> OS X?

I think they're saying "My PC runs Doom3 about 4 times faster than your Mac".

The most interesting post from the original discussion thread is that Fredstar seems to have been in contact with the author:

According to the editor of the artical:
"I don't actually know; I saw it listed in one of the articles I was reading for research, so I included it on the list."
So i don't think he knows any more than we do 😛
I'm not sure about the conclusion that he doesn't know anything more than we do, because we don't know if the author had access to articles that aren't available to the general public.

well i submitted it last night.

the dude may have been made to say that by IBM if he got info from internal documents

970GX & 970MP

I would be nice if the @ WWDC the 970GX made it into the powerbooks, iMacs, and minis; and the 970MP and/or the Cell made it into the powermacs and Xserves.

Time will tell. Will we like what it has to say?

A faster chip speed is gravy to me-- the really important factors for a new PowerMac to replace my aqing DP 1GHz Quicksilver would be:

1) PCI-Express
2) DDR2 533 Memory or better
3) Radeon 850 series GPU
4) 3.0 GHz G5 x 2

... if I see most (or all?) of these, I might have myself a write-off ...

To which I reply with wry amusement:

"Your PC is a game machine ridden with virii. Enjoy."

So, does Jobs release the 3 GHz PowerMac at WWDC and admit he was a whole year late on his promise? 😉

Steve will do something creative... don't worry. He'll probably release the new G5s with Tiger or something.

"And we have the new G5 3 GHz which we had to spend extra time getting ready for Tiger-- both shipping today."

What about POWER5 processors? We know IBM intents to put a stripped down POWER5 core running at 4.6 GHz as a core in the Cell processor. Look at the hype it has already inspired- people think that just because of that 4.6 GHz number alone that it will be the Most Powerful Thing Ever™.

Apple could really get a boost off that hype.

Enough with the Doom crap. Please people, most people couldn't care less about Doom 3. And those that do can use the Doom threads.

It is not fair to single out this post, but this Doom 3/GPU stuff is getting really old.

what about the 970mp's ?

i hear the 970gx's are basically 970mp's with a dud core.

forget 970gx. 970mp all the way...

i hope the low-end towers get the 970gx's and the top of the line gets dual 970mp's (quad!).

".... well you still only have one button."

NO JOKE.

if steve intro'ed nothing new at WWDC but a good, multiple button mouse, i would be a happy man.

of course, i've kept logitech and microsoft in biz over the years w/ all my mouse purchases (and the landfills full of beautiful, crappy mice)

Don't bet on that. PCIe is owned by Intel.

Don't be an ass. Just because you don't have tendonitis doesn't mean everybody else should be forced into a mouse that you happen to like, even if it hurts them.

Apple fully supports multi-button mice, so how do you stand to benefit, aside from appellation from Steve Jobs?
