That's too bad that you didn't get that space.
Naw. I offered the living room space back because between her and me I've got 3/4 of the garage and this space while she doesn't have any space (except she commands the backyard now).

But I would have to disconnect the HDTV from the Mac and Thinkpad and figure out how to run four powerstrips without it looking like four cords running in. All the way around it's fine.

Same as Bunnspecial. I'm usually up for one of these, but working from home and maintaining a vitally important public sector IT network can't be done from PPC. So I'm out.

Good luck all.
Thanks for the wishes of luck! :)

Ok, that's good that everything worked out :)

Everyone, I think the idea is to go exclusively PPC with your own time.

Work time is different and you should continue to use the tools expected of you to achieve the goals needed.

For example, in my work we used Windows computers only, but if I were to sneak my own laptop in for down time it would be a PPC one for the purposes of this challenge.
So back at home or away from the workface I was able to use whatever machine I wanted.
I know I'm retired now but that's how it worked for me in the past ;)

Cheers :)

Yeah, this is more the idea. I have work I do for school that needs to be done on my school PC and work I do for other people that requires my MacBook. For all personal things that I can manage, however, I'm using my PPC Macs (so basically almost everything ;)).

Yesterday my iMac G5 spent 10 hours processing a 77 minute DVD to mp4 using Handbrake ;)

I just put the same DVD into a 2012 i7 MacBook Pro - Handbrake processed it to mp4 in 45 minutes.

However everything else accomplished by pure PPC power has been relatively easy; an optimised TFF working just fine, just a little slower.

Cheers :)

Awesome! I am working on processing a 20 minute video in QT7 as we speak! :D

I'll admit I'm on my MacBook, but that's because I just completed my first week of the challenge and I wanted to sit somewhere other than my desk to surf the internet first thing in the morning (I have no PPC OS X portables yet) ;)

I'll be back to almost exclusively PPC later today :)

The actual processing was done in the G5; I only did it again on the MBP for comparison's sake ;)

I will carry this experiment on until next weekend, but don't expect any particular problems. After all, we only first got Intel into this house 10 years ago :)

Cheers :)

Awesome! I figured that was the case ;)

I'm going to try to carry this on for as long as I can, but given that I've completed my first week of the challenge I'll be a little looser with my restrictions on myself (using my MacBook as a secondary machine, similar to what role my Power Mac would fill normally) until we have a specified start and end date for the official challenge. :)

Sorry again; I'm not trying to organise things - it's just that since I got the iMac G5 out of the loft and was already using the PowerBook G4 and Pismo occasionally, I thought I might as well throw myself in :D

My MacBooks were turned off yesterday, and the MacBook Pro is happily sleeping and only be woken up in an emergency. There's no browsing being done on the iPhone either.

Maybe the others could start when they're ready and chime in?

Cheers :)

No worries! This is my first time organizing something like this, so I appreciate the help :D
You're doing better than I am, my iPhone is where I will browse if both Macs are busy with something xD

I like the idea of others chiming in when they're ready :)

Well, I could do that, in these past challenges I always tried to accomplish something on a PPC machine that I was doing on a Intel machine.

Currently my lockdown plans where to learn Assembler on my 8 bit Atari's and fiddle around with trying to make music on the 8bit 130XE and 16 bit Atari 1040STe but since I purchased a M-Audio Firewire Audiophile interface I could now link them to the G5.

I was trying to get Eclipse running a while ago on the iBook 14" in order to create an IDE for 8bit Assembler, will see if I can pick that back up.

I do have a DevOps course I have to start also for which I would need Intel stuff probably but will see ... I've learned from the past that with patience one can achieve his/her goals on a PPC machine also and most of the stuff is connecting to a cloud box which every *NIX machine is able to. (and ok Windows too :D )

The G5 has already replaced my MBp connected to a 30" Cinema Display for watching movies/tv series so that's one tick on the checklist.

I take this as you're going to participate? :D

Trying to mimic my browser setup of my MBp .

How does one open 2 different Gmail inboxes in tabs in for ex. TFF ?

Normally in the standard view I click on the "username" icon on the topright corner and switch account and open that one in a new tab.

It should be the same unless you're using the Basic HTML view I would think

Well sadly like every challenge TFF lost ... LWK won again.
CPU usage is the same but LWK pages loads faster than TFF (after foxpep) and I was able to click my Gmail username, select other account and open in a new tab to open my 2nd Gmail inbox.

MP4 enabler on TFF FPR20 , Youtube 360p keeps spinning circles , LWK just have to let it buffer a bit and off we got to Youtube playback, audio but video isnt' there :D

Well on to try different browsers during this challenge, that's what it's all about

I think my trusty PowerBook 1.67 AI is in trouble - this is the login screen for Lubuntu 12.04 -

IMG_0317.JPG

and I can't boot into Leopard at all.
Currently trying a disk repair from a firewire drive, but it keeps reporting 'incorrect number of thread records' for the Mac partition.
Looks like I will need to format and restore from backup. It's past 9 pm here now so I'll have a go tomorrow ;)

This iMac G5 that I'm typing on is still going strong, now dual booting Tiger and Leopard :)

Cheers :)

Hugh

More frustrating news - I just fired up another PowerBook (1.25GHz) which has a bad RAM slot.

After a KP it turns out it now has TWO bad RAM slots :(

And yes I have cleaned it and tried about 4 different sticks.

Pismo time I think, and that'll be a real challenge ;)

Cheers :)

I should try LWK just to see how it is. I'm a TFF user but if LWK works for things that TFF doesn't, it would be nice to have in my arsenal.

That's too bad. I'm sorry to hear about your G4s. :(
A Pismo is pretty cool though ;)

Well I decided to restore my backup to the PB 1.67 overnight so it's hopefully playing nicely in the morning.
Let's hope ;)
Cheers :)

I'm dependend on SuperDuper or CCC that conjure the life saving backup or system-replication to another mac out of thin air ...
That's is the main reason to make me stay away from other systems wherever I can.
