Well I decided to restore my backup to the PB 1.67 overnight so it's hopefully playing nicely in the morning.

Let's hope ;)

Cheers :)

Hugh
Best of luck ;)

I'm dependend on SuperDuper or CCC that conjure the life saving backup or system-replication to another mac out of thin air ...
That's is the main reason to make me stay away from other systems wherever I can.
I use SuperDuper and CCC so much xD

Yes, CCC for me. I'm lucky enough to have picked up some portable firewire drives, and with mSATA SSDs they fairly whizz along - I'm nearly 40gb into my restore already ;)

Cheers, and good night :)

That's good to hear! I need to pick up more drives and enclosures.

Good night, I wish you the best in the restoration :)

I saw this yesterday and decided to try it. I dug my DC 2.3 G5 out of the closet yesterday and went through my parts bin and found an old intel SSD. I slapped it in and installed Leopard. I installed TenFourFox, FoxPEP, and umatrix. With this setup, I was pleasantly surprised how well browsing on the web was working. It has been a while since I last used this powermac, but I remember the browsing experience being slow. Kuddos to the TenFourFox and FoxPEP developers and those who recommended umatrix. Youtube was still a little slow, so I downloaded tenfivetube v2 and that works pretty well. Other than work, where I am required to use their supplied laptop, I will use this as my main computer for the next few days and see how it goes. One thing I am looking for is a decent email client, any suggestions?

My PowerBook is running nicely, school ended up being not as resource intensive as I thought, so it's going well, I havent hit issues with it yet.

I do have to cheat just a little and use my mac pro to run CAD software for my design class though, but it's from the very beginning of the Intel era, so it's not cheating too much.

I need to conduct my schooling on the school PC (or my MacBook if the school VPN is being bad) and I make music on my MacBook, but everything else is PPC driven or done on my phone :)

I could ("could" is the keyword there), but some of the tasks I do require me to use a Windows machine, so if VNCing into another x86/x64 box is an accepted workaround, ll see if I can get my G4 working that is, Sultana (that's how I decided to name it) is often being a bit cranky sometimes.

I wish I could try and pull this off with my iMac G3 (named that one "Kihei the Limey" as it's a lime green G3/400, and also a nod to the slot-loading G3's codename "Kihei"), but it's stashed at my grandparents at the moment and I don't want to risk bringing it home because of the quarantaine in France.

I'd say VNC is acceptable :D

Best of luck with your G4! :)

Thanks, Sultana is a bit of a troublesome gal sometimes, of all Sunflower G4s, she's probably the most troublesome one known to man LOL!

Currently trying to set the VNC server on my Windows boxen as I'm typing this. I'm going to use a Asus tablet as the VNC server, since it's a pretty low-power Atom that I can easily tuck away, this'll work in a pinch.

I'll let you know when I'm ready, this'll take me a while to do all the prep work.

So I had a look yesterday if I can do my online DevOps course using a PPC.
Logging on to the course material works and the inline videos also but then there is the local dev environment you need to setup.

Node.js 10.x
Atom
Docker CE
ngrok

Looks like I will need to switch to the G5 and install Linux since PPC 32-bit doesn't have node.js nor go(-lang) or run an a 64bit PPC (G5) VM on a 32 bit PPC (G4) machine.

What is the current go-to Linux to install on a G5 and ATi or Nvidia ?

Also used my PB G4 12" 1.5Ghz again yesterday and it still runs circles around the iBook G4 14" 1.42Ghz, never understood why, maybe it's just perception.

Probably Debian (including mint and fienix) or Void for pure 64-bit. Ubuntu uses a 32-bit rootfs regardless of machine used. It just applies the appropriate 32-bit/64-bit kernel. Not that that's a bad thing, but it wont work for what you need.

Well, it is a whopping .08ghz faster. ;)

Cheers

Ok, cool! :D

When you're ready I can add you to the list :)

I've got over the camera card problem - my 64GB card can only be formatted exFAT, but I've swapped it over to a 32GB which is formatted FAT32 by the camera and fully recognised :)

Cheers :)

The cards are formatted in camera ;)

A 64GB card is formatted exFAT by the Nikon software, and a 32GB card is formatted FAT32 by the camera.

I've gone over to smaller cards so they can mount in PPC and allow me to download photos in order to edit them.

Cheers :)

Consider me ready, I'll buff out the scratches later, righ
t now my VNC plans were half-thwarted by the fact that my server is locked at a unusual resolution (two monitors) and I can't seem to lock it to something that the iMac's screen could display without problems (something like 800x600), going to spin up a small debian distro VM..

So far here's a reminder of Sultana's specs:

And the tempoary VNC host's specs (will soon be moved to its own VM with a proper resolution to avoid scaling issues):

Will do! Thanks for the spec sheets :D

You can format >32GB partitions as FAT32. Windows just doesn't let you.

I apologise; I misunderstood you.

Yes, I can format over 32GB cards as FAT32 in OS X, but I normally use the camera to format cards, hence the restriction.
It's no problem, as currently 64GB is way over the top for the amount of photos I can take ;)

Cheers :)

@Hughmac - yep, that's what I meant. Some software or devices impose artificial restrictions with regards to formatting FAT32 partitions. Can your camera deal with a 64GB FAT32 card?

Yes I reckon it can, but I have plenty of 32s, and it's actually better to keep several smaller cards running than to use one large capacity. I have had a card fail and it's not nice.

Also if I need to format in camera again it will revert to exFAT.

Thanks, and cheers :)
