Let us list all the PowerPC Chat-ing apps that still work...
(And maybe get together on-them.)
So there is :
- iChat , (with Bonjour for/on lan) Jabber IM with gmail/talk.google.com seem to start.... however not sure if it works , all old buddies are offline and Not Authorized

- GameRanger 1.0 - great app , even for gaming , works well, small 8.5mb

- Adium 1.4.5 (with at least mIRC/IRC working perfectly on it)

- TeamSpeak 3 Client (outdated... works on some older servers? if connected properly - not really sure how to use it.)

- Tweetie 1.2.8 (worked a long time ago)

L.E. Found 2 more in my apps
- iRC version 0.1.0 beta / (and iFire that dose not work anymore)
- MultiDC++ (Alpha4)

Tnx for any aditional contributing info.

iChat works via Bonjour of course, and Jabber, provided the Jabber server is compatible with Tiger/Leopard's iChat versions still. I have a local Mac OS X Server set up (10.5 Server) and iChat lets me log into it with my Jabber server account on Tiger and Leopard. There shouldn't be a reason a service/website couldn't offer support for that over the internet as well, but as far as I know, there isn't one out there dedicated for older Macs currently. Don't know about Google Talk though, personally.

IRC is still very much used by millions. Macgarden has a channel, voidlinux-ppc has a channel, debianppc has a channel etc etc. Pretty much any software/OS with a development team still uses irc. Then there are tons of off-topic channels, regional channels, etc etc etc. It's withstood the test of time while multiple other chat protocols have come and gone.

Cheers

No idea. Never used it. Limechat is nice if you like inline images shown rather than links, but i myself prefer irssi or xchat/hexchat as they are cross-platform and can be used on windows/linux/bsd/mac etc.

I use IRC on Adium... quite often, on some channels on the undernet. There are more than 1000 users logged on constantly. So there is activity with my brooderin .
You can use IRC on your smart phone. most people use it like that , I hear.
I don't like f-b. or whatsapp. I don't Use it. they just keep asking for my phone number.

I haven't used it myself, but a lot of people seem to like IRCcloud, for phone use.

IRC has changed relatively slowly compared to other platforms; you can even still log onto some servers with an client made for System 6 or 7, so you certainly would be able to with IRCle. The main trouble there is that there's no legit way to get a registration code. Currently I use Snak for OS X, and 'MacIRC' for OS 9 (although I think ShadowIRC is, in terms of features, probably the best overall free OS 9 client).

If you read Japanese, 'Chocoa' also looks like a top-notch client. Unfortunately I don't. I hoped to make an English translation for it, but a lot of the Japanese-specific text is in PPob ("PowerPlant") resources, and I don't have a copy of Metrowerks Constructor to edit them with.

No way, you can still use iChat?! I’m stuck on OS X Lion on my poly MacBook, so I will try it. The user ID is from the lady that owned it before me.. lol... it has a weird name..

Snak, one of the top IRC clients in its day, was officially abandoned and made freeware about a year and a half ago. I can confirm that the registration works for OS X versions going back to at least Panther. (No such luck for the OS 9 version, unfortunately.)

AIM clients may work with the 'Phoenix' server, albeit that is a niche service. I could see it becoming popular with retro enthusiasts, though.

WICH VERSION IS THE CORRECT MAC ONE? seem to be for PC... how do I start YM and AIM.... this would be epic if it still worked.

Which version would depend on your system and which version of AIM you would have run on it back in the day. System 7 Today suggests that 4 is 'latest for System 7', and 3 is good for earlier 68k machines. The last version for OS 9 is said to be 4.7; that's available on Mac Garden. As far as setting it up for the Phoenix server, I haven't tested it extensively, but theoretically just about any version should be configurable for it, provided that you properly tweak the proxy settings (which, in the Mac version, might involve some ResEditing).

Mac Repository also offers a pre-modified version; I haven't tested it but you might find it helpful. If it isn't easy to set up and the existing documentation isn't helpful, I suppose I could make a Mac guide for it; I always liked AIM and the thought of people still using it would be sufficient motivation.

So how could I send a text message from a power mac to someone with an eyephone now? ichat used to hook up to messages or whatever through AIM and I could send messages to friends with that. I tinkered with the IRC stuff but that looks like a way to participate in a chat "room," not to send someone a message.

You can't unless both users have an app that support whatever protocol you are using with iChat. iMessage does not work with the services that iChat supported (AIM, Jabber, Bonjour). I don't know if there is an app on iPhone that lets you add third-party AIM or Jabber servers offhand.

Google voice should work fine in TenFourFox. I've been using it for text messages / calls this week, as I get poor cell reception where I'm currently located.

can confirm Phoenix server working great on PC & MAC (L.E.tested on mac iChat working super.) on AIM/AOL 6.1.3.1... for IChat settings Are : Proxy server Name :iwarg.ddns.net : 5190 ... you need to recreate your user-name on Phoenix server webpage/site and confirm via an email. (Mine -aol- is same as here)

ICHAT with settings logs-in great to Phoenix . Can Confirm.

So this only lets you use ichat to talk with other users on the phoenix server? Or is it possible to use the phoenix server to chat with people on messages too?

Here is the 1 million dollar question - Out of the many years PowerPC and 68k have been in existence. How much is still out there compared to what Macintosh Garden has and Macintosh Repository ??? That is, do we now have all software ever created on these sites ???
