@sparty411 I see... I only asked because the System Information window reported Version 2002 instead of Version 2014. :)

There are quite a few browsers still maintained for XP @Rikintosh . I'm typing from one right now.

I know (I also use XP on my old gaming computer)
, but the main problem with surfing the internet with windows xp, is that Windows on s can't handle more modern ssl certificates, due to microsoft having stopped releasing updates for it in 2014. Some sites (using https) don't cannot be accessed by any browser

I wrote a multiplatform java browser many years ago. It was simple, but I was able to access YouTube, and I watched videos at 240 or 360p without problems through it. I believe he is on some backup DVD here at home.

If I find it, I will upload it to media fire and post the link here.

@Amethyst1 No, not officially. But someone has packaged every post-SP3 update up to EOL into a very realistic "SP4" installer. It even changes part of what is displayed in the System Information panel, which I think furthers its "legitimacy".

Really, what's the true difference between it and something official?

I'll have to disagree - if there's anything I hate, it's stuff like that messing with what my system displays. :)

Reminds me of that unofficial service pack for Windows 98. I never used it myself, but I remember when I used to hang out in Windows 9x forums years ago and people would mention it. I don't know if it changed system displays.

Sadly, the writing is on the wall. Once Kaiser stops developing TENFOURFOX(I assume some day he will stop, as classila is not going anywhere at all, despite when I spoke to him a few months ago, telling me its not abandoned). I think we need the embrace the NEW kid on the block - PowerPC's cousin, or ARM. That will be our future since with that we can develop universal binaries for PPC on an arm mac. ARM is what should be the goal - the future.. Just my 02 cents.

No thank you. ARM is pretty cheap on cell phones, but as soon as Apple got their hands on it, prices started to rise, Apple will manufacture less powerful processors, with ridiculously high prices, taking advantage of the little knowledge about arm currently of most of the public. Apple will build pcs with $35 raspberry-like cards, and sell it for $999.

I use powerpc for nostalgia, a hobby to have fun, I believe that most of the forum here has a computer or mac intel or amd, and use your old ppc just to have a little fun on the weekend.

Ok, I see where you are getting at, but when Intel Macs are gone, where does one with Mac go ? There is no alternative once Apple gets rid of Intel - So, you thing ARM will bring demise to Apple ? I wish PPC could be revised to show its true muscle, but compared to Intel it sadly can't. But, once 104fox is retired, then where do we go from there ? PPC never be able to browse the web, though i originally called for all out war against the TSL/SSL and allow older machines to access the web.. Who needs TSL/SSL for wikipedia for instance ?

Not that I don’t love ARM, I love ARM, I love my raspberry and the projects I did with them, but I mean I don’t think Apple will really improve the arm, as it is a competitor of the Intel Core i7 and amd ryzen. My opinion is a move to profit, as there is currently a "hypie" on top of the arm. I believe that they would have made a better choice with power, or even with AMD. I believe that all this transition is because manufacturing ipads is cheaper than making macbooks, so they will manufacture ipads in the form of a notebook, call them a macbook, and increase the profit margin with that.

Apple's arm processors look quite powerful because they are compared to other arm and other low-power x86 processors, but I think it will be a distress for people who need to do some heavy lifting. They are switching to arm, because their software is very well developed, there are very good video, image and audio manipulation applications for ipad and iphone, they will rely on that to make the transition. I am not against the use of arm in personal computers, desktop and laptops, before I accepted to pay dearly for a mac, mainly, because it had an i7 core inside. But I would be more comfortable buying a laptop or ARM desktop from another brand any for say, $ 300, $ 400, and would use it for a replacement equivalent of a netbook or tablet...

In other words, I believe that the public that wanted a powerful mac, will be without a mac.

I'm sorry, I think I ended up deviating from the main topic ... Has anyone tried to use some type of linux with a modern linux browser on the G5? Perhaps this was the paleative solution.

A beta version of OS X 10.6 for powerPC recently appeared on the internet. Supposedly there is also the source code for this system. If the ppc community came together, they could end this system, and develop new applications (especially a browser) to keep the ppc scene active

Well this is where there is some good news. The G5 is a 64-bit cpu, and 64-bit Linux, even PPC64, has support for things that 32-bit, particularly 32-bit PPC, doesn't.

And in particular, I'm talking about PPC fork of Void Linux, which supports current versions of Firefox out of the box on PPC64 platforms. Not forks of Firefox, just straight Firefox. Because there was another transition in PowerPC hardware, these old G5 cpus still have some issues running modern POWER software, so you can't just target a POWER9 cpu and get G5 support, but it wouldn't hurt to try out a Void Linux live disk on a G5 and see how it works.

Firefox 60.9 equivelent forks (SpiderWeb/InterWeb) work really well.

As for Firefox Quantum on Void... it works, but still has some color issues, and is quite heavy for a G5. It will work in a pinch if it's needed for a stubborn site, but i wouldn't use it for general browsing. Think of tenfourfox speed on a 500mhz G4, except this is on a dual 2ghz G5. Stick with the much lighter forks and browsing is pretty decent.

With that said, i was finally able to build Arctic Fox for the Void 64-bit glibc version. It's linked here:
