Peace Out

...I felt obligated to offer proof of your errors in both use and judgment....When reasonable human beings....people who know better....direct result of personal user error....muddy the waters with truth and facts..

Listen, boy, and I'll say this just one time so zip your fly and get your ears on:

  • Change your "name" to something that's more reflective of your officious attitude. Anyone who sees themselves as "obligated" to "prove" others wrong is either a cop or...a pr#ck.
  • Meditate more -- much, much more -- if in fact you purport to be, or aim to be, in some sort of "zen" state (yeah, right),
  • Change "religions." Yes, that's the ticket. One of those intolerant, self-righteous, hellfire "religious" lunatics from down south seems to be right up your alley. I'm sure you'll have much more success with that than you've had with Buddhism, which you obviously don't practice. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Now go back to your supercomputer.

Funny how you ignore all your own short comings that I brought up about your empty rant.

I also recommend a name change for you. Maybe something like "techless ranter of improper conclusions toward operating systems" would be fitting.

This thread's starting to get pretty good. Anyway, I'm interested in seeing more benchmarks Tiger vs Leopard...

Id like to pick up a copy but they still want $100 plus for it, c'mon, 10.6 is thirty dollars and 10.7 is due out any day now!

I found a single user 10.5 for $2.99 at a thrift store :D

The disk needs cleaning so I haven't tried it yet. I will have to get a larger hard drive before I try installing Leopard.

Nice find! Even if you end up needing one of those CD/DVD cleaning kits to make it work it's worth it. I would make a copy for backup since it's in bad shape. You're legally allowed to copy a retail version for personal backup.

OK, just happened to do this test today on my newly acquired G5...

G5 dual 1.8
2.5gb ram

Geekbench with 10.4.11
1648

Geekbench with 10.5.8
1452
first run seemed too low, so I ran it again and got...
1595
Still not as fast but close. Note that Leopard was on the original 80gb SATA and Tiger was on a new 320gb SATA if that makes a difference.

Also did some boot up times from a cold start...
10.4.11 = 37sec
10.5.8 = 41sec

And here is the G4 867 single I just retired...
Geekbench with 10.4.11
502
58sec boot

Don't forget that the cheap version of Snow Leopard is cheap because it is an upgrade from Leopard. The full one costs more.

And since we are on the subject of Tiger vs Leopard on PPC, I have a concern. It seems that developers are ditching PPC sooner than expected. As in the support went from Tiger PPC straight to Leopard Intel skipping over Leopard PPC users. Mozilla just did this with Firefox 4 and now today I went to update Flash and the latest plugin said Intel for version 10.1.blah blah. So I had to dig around to get 10.0.blah blah.

But rather than turn this into a rant I will try to be productive with it and ask... Other than the features that come with it, what reasons (for those that mostly surf the web) are there for PPC owners to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard? Is it worth it? I see that Safari 5 works on PPC, but it what else?

BTW - I only own Tiger and only got those Leopard scores above because the G5 that I bought came loaded with Leo. I have since erased it.

Note: Correction to my previous post... Flash 10.1 is the last build for PPC, 10.2 is Intel only.

And yes there's also iTunes 10 and the fact that :apple: still supporting Leopard with security updates, so not too bad. Maybe Lion will bring the price of Leo down :)

n8mac:

I have an 11 year old Sawtooth with heavy upgrades and I much prefer 10.5. One glaring reason to upgrade was already pointed out by you for the fact that 10.5 is still security updated. There was just an update about a week ago.

Rather than blather on I will just list direct reasons I prefer 10.5 in no particular order:

1. Better user experience and a more streamlined GUI. 10.5 is the first version of OS X I have not done something to modify the GUI in some way. IMO they finally perfected it in 10.5.

2. On higher end G4's and all G5's there is so little difference in performance that I feel it wouldn't be a valid excuse not to run it.

3. Software. As it stands right now most of the Mac developers that still support PowerPC have dropped 10.4 support. This is especially true when it comes to freeware and shareware apps as a lot of them still support PowerPC but only 10.5. ie. VLC, Transmission, Safari, iTunes, Adium, The Unarchiver. Those are just the few freeware I use and this is the case with almost all that still support PPC. I find Leo even has great support still for 10.1 era apps and games.

4. Time Machine. Aside from the cheesy effects they use in it I feel it's actually a very capable and ingenious form of backup. I have done reinstalls that only took maybe 40 min total which includes the 10.5 reinstall and then the TM restore of the user account and all your files/apps/settings.

5. Core Image, Core Video and Core Animation. CI and CV are much improved in 10.5 and CA is a new feature. Your G5 would for sure have a capable GPU which virtually makes it an extra CPU in 10.5.

I will list more later but time is a factor for me at the moment.

I can't confirm this 100%, but I heard Leopard supports the "two finger control tap" on PowerBooks. This is really the only reason why I would want to upgrade. I've tried other 3rd party apps like OneFingerSnap and iScroll but nothing comes close to native support.

SuperDuper! works as a nice Time Machine replacement. Knock on wood I haven't needed to upgrade my iTunes to version 10 to sync either my phone or iPod.

Really I haven't run into any other issues with Tiger or the apps I run needing 10.5... Oh how I wish I could run netflix on PPC, but that's another topic all together, and will soon be solved when I pick up a used mini to serve duty as a HTPC...

There are still lots of older Tiger versions of apps made available but most new PowerPC development is 10.5 only. I am speaking from what I see all the time at places like macupdates.com. If you have 10.4 you often have to use an older version they provide a link to.

The main reason for this trend I would think is that 10.5 is a lot closer to 10.6 so it's easier to keep PowerPC going while still coding for intel. 10.4 is very different and lacks all the socket layers etc. on 10.5 so coding is different.

Yes native two-finger tap and scroll.
