Funny, I have been running Vista on my self built for almost 4 years without any negative issues at all. No need for W7 that I can see.

How will this be managed when I sell my Mac someday? Imagine I only have an App store download of "Lion", no physical copy: Can I do a fresh install of Lion for the buyer or would he/she need my Apple ID / password for activating/using it? Even if not, will the OS on this computer still be "connected" with me via Apple ID, even if it now belongs to someone else? (Worst case: He/She's doing illegal pirating stuff with it ...) Do I create a separate partition with the Lion download installer for the buyer? Questions over questions ...

(and what if I want to boot from the OSX disc to repair the hard disk via Utilities - the case when you had a kernel panic or hard reset and you need to repair it BEFORE having loaded the system from it?)

I don't think your Lion partition will include data of your Apple ID.

I would say this is apple trying to kill the second hand market , if you have to wipe your Mac before you sell it (which i would do, i dont want any risk of my apple ID or anything else persisting) , and the person buying it has no way of installing an OS unless an OS is already installed, then they are stuck or have to go to an apple store for an install at what will no doubt be good chunk of change.

And why wouldn't you still have an OS installed on your Mac before selling it? That part hasn't changed. You still need to include software in there. I don't think any buyer would want to tackle on the hassle of having to bring their Mac to an Apple store just to install a legitimate copy of Mac OS X. Couple that with the fact that not everyone in the world lives remotely close to an Apple store and now we have problems.

As I've said before, the partition will always live in your Mac....waiting to be written over by the next Mac OS X upgrade, whenever that is (or probably OSXI finally). The end user will always be able to reinstall as many times as he/she wishes. The big concern here is if the hard drive is replaced or fails for the buyer, then I don't see other any other possible way to install Mac OS unless contacting Apple.

An upside of the Mac App Store is that software (including OS X Lion) can be used on all the systems you control.

But the corresponding downside is that you cannot sell the software.

If you sell a Mac that has been upgraded to Lion you need to wipe it and reinstall the original OS (for which you should have the disks). If you buy a Mac that comes with Lion, it will have Lion on the restore disks that come with the system.

Presumably distribution will work like it has for the developer previews: you can download Lion one time and then copy the "app" to other systems and do the install there. You will have to enter your Apple ID at that time to validate. Consider it to be "Apple Genuine Advantage".

Agree with the first statement, but Apple has already made clear that Lion will be available only via digital, so for new Macs, it should just be in a partition out of the box. We'll see though. if they do happen to include any physical media, it should be the USB key that ships with the Air :)

They've made it clear the the *upgrade* will only be digital. There is still a need for the restore DVD.

anybody thought about a different possibility ?
what about that one

brandnew Mac's will get install discs for the preinstalled OSX lion
every Mac came with snow leopard can upgrade to lion over the app store for $29
people who want a clean install of lion (the ones with leopard or even tiger as original OS ) will need to purchase a disc for $150 which includes iwork or so will be retailed later when new iMac's ship with lion
similar to snow leopard box set when still some used tiger
but with cloud computing as the way of the future .....

I was wondering if the Lion install process will validate the user's Apple ID to see if the user has purchased Lion and refuse to install if not.

Although I haven't personally verified it, the latest Developer's Preview is supposed to check the Apple ID like other Mac App Store purchases.

Within hours of the WWDC keynote, posts like these started showing up with instructions on how to make a bootable Lion install disk after purchasing thru the App Store.

Wrong. You're assuming EVERY computer purchased will have internet access and an individual AppleID registered. How about non-individual uses like an office or people that don't use the internet? How about the thousands of retailers that sell Apple products, don't you think you'll be peeved at being cheated out of revenue?

There WILL be physical distribution media. Apple has no choice in the matter.
Of course they have a choice.

Thats a really stupid statement.

And jumping back at me with that statement without a reason is smarter?

Care to enlighten me?

Dell and other PC manufacturers have been shipping computers with restore partitions for years.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; nl-nl) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

It is normal on laptops as well.

Can I just spend $30 for purchase osx lion license from mac app store, and then copy lion installer from a friend who also has purchased and download lion installer? 4 gb is going to take several hours with my connection, better just buy the license with my apple ID and copy the downloaded file from someone else, skipping a tiring download process

Will it work?

To add some enlightenment on the restore partition -- yes there there is one in OS X Lion. But like with the PCs, you still need something to restore from if the hard drive fails. I'm certainly hoping they will still provide media with new systems.

I'm making a new Snow Leopard image now that I'll upgrade to Lion to find out about the Apple ID check, and will be posting again here when I'm done.

That should work. Again, I'll know that answer in a few hours.
