I wonder if Steve Jobs would have approved this look. I think no. It follows trends, flat like 'everyone else'. Apple is known for their exclusiveness, prior OS X versions look nothing like competitors. Not saying its bad or anything like that, it's still the best. But why flat? Why follow trends?

For mac, it is simple
1. More stable
2. Better battery
3. Faster startup time
4. More compatibility
5. Less bugs/crashes

For iOS,
1. I had so many syncing issues with iTunes 11 & iOS 7, I swapped out for an iPhone 5 with the latest iOS 6 firmware and using 10.7. Not only is it more organized, but syncing is quicker and less stressful. Haven't had any issues.
2. Music App - iOS 6 TRUMPS the iOS 7 music app.
3. I would argue better battery life, some might find that debatable. From my experience, it is better with iOS 6.

2011 MBA here.... I'm on Mavericks and have horribly unacceptable sync times for iPad/iPhone. Also still having delays from sleep (now is requiring me to hit the power button half the time to wake)... despite the recent firmware upgrade. Makes me wish to know if Mavericks is the problem.

The operating system is expected to see its public release in the fall, possibly in October.

There is no longer any point as describe the future as 'this fall'

Fall starts about 3 weeks from now and goes right up to Christmas.

So I think we should just say "by the end of this year" or "sometime this year"

and forget about this slightly misleading "this fall"

Thanks

Why don't you leave poor dead Steve out of this. If you don't care for the new look, just go ahead and say so. I don't think Steve would have minded a little dissent. Well, on second thought, I guess he did.

I'm still on 10.6.8 on my mac & iOS 6.1.4 on my iPhone 5 and no intention to move anytime soon.

Out of my cold dead hands!

Still on 10.8 over here.

Why don't I upgrade to 10.9? Because every time I upgraded, I had to buy the newest version of VMWare, which is not that expensive, but it also messed up my VMWare file, which meant I had to re-install Windows. And not just re-install Windows, but the entire range of software on my Windows virtual machine.

And given there's no features of Mavericks that interest me, I'm staying with Mountain Lion which is rock stable for me.

I also don't see any features of Yosemite that are of interest to me either. All that handshake stuff between Mac and iPhone, I don't need that. My prime need is rock solid stability for things I need to get work done. Everything is working perfectly on Mountain Lion, so I'm camping there until these Macs die out.

The battery life boost, and RAM handling of Mavericks was more than worth it to me, but whatever suits you.

Son had the sleep problem, same machine spec. Was resolved with a firmware/efi update for him about 2-3 months ago.

The better question is why people care what Steve Jobs might or might not have thought about what the current Apple does. I doubt Microsoft fans ask themselves if Bill Gates (who is still alive and can actually be asked) would approve of some change to Windows.

Because Steve Jobs was a genius when it came to product design, and Bill Gates wasn't.

That's no reason to base what WE think about something on what ONE PERSON might have thought. He could have been the greatest genius ever, but in a mostly subjective field like a UI it doesn't matter.

Dear Macrumours, you are:

I would never recommend using it on a machine that holds your data. Not because of stability per se, but because Apple doesn't support it. Thus, if a bug wipes your data out you'll get no support.

If you have good backups, maybe...

I've kept backups and no problems so far.

OS X still looks as unique as it did before. Can you say it looks more like Windows now? Linux? Pretty sure not.

Good design isn't very subjective. Actually, that's one of the things Steve Jobs said too.

Those are fighting words around here :p

Who the hell is using 10.8?

I hope that the others are due to hardware support (lack of), otherwise someone is really missing a lot of great stuff.

I tried 10.9 for a few months. Never again. I tried to tell my friend before he upgraded, but he did it anyway, and then he kept complaining that his computer was slow until he accidentally killed it with water and had to buy a new one.

----------

I'm the opposite. I feel Yosemite is very similar to Tiger and looks very unpolished. Mavericks looks professional, while Yosemite just feels like an upgrade for the sake of an upgrade.

But to each his own.

To each his own? That's not how it works. Either you deal with Yosemite's design, or you stay with your current computer and OS forever. I'm not saying the new design is bad but that you can't really stay with the old one for that long… unless Apple adds theme options later.

Me, on my 2013 Air, its all working exactly as i want, with all my games, so its staying on 10.8. Yosemite with Continunity might change that.

Seven Snow Leopard machines here...primarily due to software compatibility reasons. A simple way to virtualise Snow Leopard would speed our adoption of a newer OS.

There are many design studios still using SL simply because they can run Freehand on it and that's the last OS X they can do that.

We have a bunch of Mac Minis at work that are on 10.8 due to the version of Parallels we use to run some legacy PC software. The benefits of 10.9 were not significant enough for us to justify the cost of upgrading Parallels on each machine to support 10.9.

So 10.8 it is until we find a valid reason to upgrade.

wow i admire your strength. my "ocd" wouldnt allow that also updates r like opening a christmas calender door as a kid to me :D

new things to toy around with
....but some updates feel like I opened all those calendar doors on the first day...after the first sugar rush dies off, the stomach pain starts

So... why not just create a full clone of your virtual machine(s) before you upgrade?
