Someone in another thread pointed out this deal, and, if I'm understanding it correctly, would be perfect for me.

As I mentioned, I'm not eligible for an upgrade until Jan of 2016. This deal, though, seems to be saying that I can trade in my current 5s, sign a new 2 year contract (early), and get a $200 gift card so essentially I'm upgrading my 5s as if I had an upgrade, and get a giftcard, so my update is free.

Now, I know, I could just sell my 5s and then buy the 6 outright, but honestly this would be easier (and easier to justify to my wife!! :) )

Am I reading this right?

T MOBILE FULL PRICE is on Apples website, It says contract free.

Will not work with Verizon though.

Pretty sure this isn't true. Didn't they announce the 6 would work with 20 different LTE bands....If so, won't there just be a single main version (like the iPad Air cellular that has 2 versions with one being specific to China and other to rest of the world (A1475?)

Looks that way..

iPhone 6
Model A1549 (GSM)
Model A1549 (CDMA)

iPhone 6 Plus
Model A1522 (GSM)
Model A1522 (CDMA)

ATT and T-mobile both look to get the A1549 and A1522 models in the US

I don't know for sure, but I think that it is true that the T-Mobile phone will not work on Verizon (or at least not well). The model of the phones are identical, and the hardware is identical. The T-Mobile phone will support all of Verizon's LTE bands, so data will work perfectly on LTE on Verizon.

However, I may be wrong about this, but I thought that the firmware on GSM phones did not enable the CDMA features. I *think* that Apple does this because they are charged for enabling CDMA, and so only do so when necessary. My understanding is that a CDMA iPhone 5S or 6 will work on ATT / Verizon / T-Mobile, while the GSM will only work on ATT / T-Mobile.

I have read that T-Mobile phones will work on Verizon, so I might be wrong. Maybe when you activate the phone on Verizon, the carrier update enables CDMA.

If you cannot use CDMA, then you will not be able to use the iPhone to make calls (at least until VOLTE is active).

Why not buy with your upgrade, destroy the sim that comes with the 6 before turning on the phone, and use the sim from your 5 or 5S? Assuming that's what you have now. The data plan change takes place when the new sim is activated, so just destroy it before booting up?

Could you give me some more details about this? I haven't heard anybody else bring this up, but I'm not denying that it's possible. Maybe give some links with some tutorials? I'm also on Unlimited and want to keep the plan (of course), but get a new phone. I paid full price for the 5s last year and I think it's been worth it, so I'm not against doing it again.

I have a Note 3 right now. But if that worked, why wouldn't everybody be doing it that way? I've never heard of this when looking for ways to upgrade and keep my data plan before, which I've done pretty extensively.

Well look at years past. Did Verizon let you pay full price / outright this time last year on pre-orders?

I wonder if you go to pre-order and select your options, it will just allow you to purchase it full price on Verizon when it sees you're not eligible for an upgrade.

Am I getting my hopes up for no reason?

And if that won't be possible, any best guesses as to whether I'll be able to walk in to the store on the 19th and just buy the Verizon phone outright?

If we're speaking about Apple's site, then yes, you'll proceed through checkout, have the system check your discount availability, and check out by paying full price. I have Verizon and did this very thing with the 5 and will be doing so again with the 6 Plus.

In order to buy at full price via apple store, you must not be eligible for an upgrade. If you are, then go to the store or preorder via verizon website.

Those who do not have an upgrade for whatever reason (under 2 year contract or current edge contract) can purchase at full price.

On the day of Pre-Order, select the phone/options. Then it will ask for account details. Once entered it will tell you that you do not qualify for upgrade and you will see the full amount listed...

Then proceed with purchase as normal...

Great - thanks to you both. So it sounds like I have two options. Buy the new phone outright from Verizon through the pre-order, or potential take part in this Verizon promotion where I trade in my 5s, upgrade to the 6, and sign a new two-year deal (even though I'm only 9 months into my current contract).

Should be interesting.

You would be an idiot to trade anything above a 4S to Verizon  please don't do that

I am a US customer, but more or less only an overseas user. If I buy the T-Mobile w/o contract it seems I should be able to use it most anywhere overseas, since it is indeed, unlocked.

I will be doing this on Sept 12

How come? If I trade in my 5s, I pay the $200 upgrade fee, but get a $200 gift card which essentially makes it a straight swap of the 5s for the 6 (with a new 2 year contract, which I'm fine with signing).

Otherwise, I sell my 5s for someone around $350-$400, buy the 6 outright, and end up paying about $300-$400 out of pocket.

Not sure why trading it in is such a bad deal?

Normally, I would agree that you should not trade in to Verizon.

However, Verizon seems to be offering a good deal. They are giving you a $200 gift card + $450 iPhone 6 discount for your old phone. The only catch seems to be that your contract will be extended to 2 more years.

I say go for it!

OK, so I'm an AT&T customer and I'm eligible for an upgrade, but I'd rather just buy the phone off contract and pay it all at once instead of going through NEXT or having them tack a fee onto my monthly bill with a regular 2-year contract upgrade pricing.

I should be able to pre-order an unlocked iPhone 6 at full price from AT&T's website on Friday morning, right?

Well, I spoke with an online representative for Verizon, and they said the line must be out-of-contract - AKA, not in the middle of their contract like I am. Wouldn't most 5c and 5s owners be on contract, unless of course they purchased at full price..

Anyways, seems like my plan is shot!

I sold my 5s for $500 a couple of weeks ago (32GB Gold). In a worst case scenario, I'd sell to Gazelle or the like.

It's known as the BB method, but it works with any retailer as long as you have the phone shipped to you and don't turn it on until you replace the sim. The only wonky thing about it is that you're actually agreeing to a 2GB plan, but it's never activated because that information is held on the SIM that you would destroy.

Your guess is as good as mine. I don't think we will be able to buy it on apples site on friday.

Could someone clarify my situation. I'm eligible for an upgrade with ATT. However, I need my phone to be unlocked because of out of country travel. Will I be able to preorder at full price to get an unlocked iPhone 6? TY

You are just selling your 5s to Verizon for less than $200.

Good to know ... the deal seemed too good to be true!

In that case, trading in your phone for a $200 gift card is a really bad deal!!!

How about this scenario:

We're on AT&T. My wife is not eligible for an upgrade or Next because she got an S5 a while back. If I pre-order for her number:

  1. Will apple.com sell me an iPhone at full price or it will just balk and say "no go"?
  2. If apple.com will allow me to pre-order at full price for her number, shouldn't the phone unlocked?
  3. Can't I just pull the SIM and insert the SIM from my 5 into the 6 and just not worry about the SIM that came in the 6?
