Im in the same boat as several here. I’ve upgraded every year since the 3G. Last few years always seem a little less attractive.

Remember when we could get the new phone for $99 and sell the old phone to cover the cost.

I used to practically make money each year.

This year I would skip for sure but I’m in the unique position of need a second phone for work so I will now have the XS Max for work and the Max Pro for personal use.

Same here. Upgraded every year since the 3G. Were they ever $99, though? I usually go with the mid-range storage capacity, but I though the low-end was $199 back when the carriers were still subsidizing them?

Posted this in another thread ...

On the day of the keynote I sat and watched the announcement of the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

It was a very ho-hum moment. Being an owner of the iPhone XS MAX, I saw no real improvements.

I swore I would not purchase this new phone knowing that the 2020 phone was rumored to being far more revolutionary.

Then I sat...

...I sat and watched preorders go live on Friday.

Every hour I checked availability. The new Pro phones were either selling slowly or there was more stock than usual.

8.5 hours into preorder day I began playing around with pricing.

I could get $600 for my iPhone XS Max and get into the upgrade program and pay $36 a month for a 512GB Pro Max model.

I placed my order.

Really, not sure why I did it. Perhaps I didn't want to miss out on the joy of receiving a new phone on September 20th.

Give me credit...I didn't upgrade my Apple Watch Series 4 SS.

Yes you are correct $199 sounds right. And I had to walk to work in the snow both ways! :)

I don’t think there’s any good reason to upgrade from XS/XS Max unless you’re facing the problem of having too much money. There’s almost nothing the XS/XS Max can’t do that the 11 Pros can, unless you really can’t live without the “slowfie” which is a joke feature meant for kids.. you can just attach a lens attachment if you’re really into photography and want a wide angle lens.

Feel free to take it back. I saved it there and then.

I am upgrading to the 11 Pro Max from an SE. The only thing from your list that I would've liked is the 120Hz refresh rate. Other than that, for me, this is an excellent upgrade.
Wow! I think the size and weight are going to be a big shock for you coming from an SE.

- no 120Hz display
- no TouchID on screen
- too heavy (gets heavier every year)
- no 5G
- no USB-C
- no two ways charging
- still the same notch
- no always on lock screen
- no Apple Pencil Support (Pro Create works fine on a 6.5 iPhone)

The thing is most people don’t care about the things you mentioned. Those things won’t even be considered a major upgrade in my opinion. Major upgrades are exactly what Apple did this yearwith The camera system, device speed and software enhancements.

My personal phone is an Xs Max and I am keeping her until 2020 when I hope that 5G will be embedded.

I did upgrade my work 7+ to 11 mainly for the battery life.

Im curious. What do you intend to do with 5g that you’re not doing with current 4g? Remember this is a cell phone and not at home devices.

I’m not bothered by the iPhones not having 5G. I don’t think 5G is ready yet. Maybe in a year or two. For those who keep their phones longer, it is probably better to hold off until they release an iPhone with 5G. But I plan to upgrade again next year.

Working in cell towers, it's far from ready.

I use the phone as a hotspot for my other devices so 5G will help with the Wi-Fi to cellular data up/down link speeds.

Plus I travel a lot internationally and need faster cellular data.

I had an iPhone X. I gave that to my wife and got a Note 10+. That lasted a week. Great phone but I prefer iPhone so I returned my Note and was going to get an XS Max about a week before the 11 was announced. So for me it just was worth waiting for the Pro Max. I mean the XS Max was full price a week ago when I returned my Note.

I took my wife’s old 7+ and I’m using it till my Pro Max arrives tomorrow. But I’m excited for the Pro Max. The camera will be nice but the battery and screen are a big interest.

I feel the same way that you do. I have a XS Max and ordered the 11 Pro Max because I'm on the AT&T Next Every Year plan. I've never been so uncertain about upgrading before. The XS Max is an excellent phone, and really really speedy. I upgraded to iOS 13 and it feels like a new phone. I scheduled an in store pickup. So I will see if I'm blown away and make my decision then. Right now I'm leaning towards keeping the XS Max...60/40
