For starters, it falls on a Sunday. Our holidays are back-loaded (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day - yes technically not "back-loaded" but so close to Christmas).

Christmas is a secularized holiday that always falls on the same day. Easter may be secularized, but Good Friday certainly isn't, so governments can't designate it as a holiday here as it would be seen as establishing a state religion.

wow we got 14 public holidays here. good thing i am not working for an US Company i guess :D

how the heck isnt easter a holiday in the US? mind blown

For the same reason, most of them say, Happy Holidays during Christmas except, everyone is onboard at it as a holiday Christmas Day. :p

Yep, if you want more holidays and enjoying life more / work to live, live the life somewhere. :D

That's not Apple's way. They want to give you plenty of notice and wake up at 3AM, so you can crash their servers.

It actually works out for me living in Hawaii. If it is midnight CA time it is 9PM the night before for me but 3AM for you East coasters. :p:p:p

I totally forgot until the next morning to order my 6+. Won't forget for the watch.

My guess is that because this is an entirely new product line for Apple that they will treat it the same way they did the very first iPhone: no preorders. The day it was launched they did it in late afternoon, too, rather than in the morning, so no one was camping out overnight. We all lined up at the mall starting at around probably noon and curious shoppers looked at us, wondering why we were all there as we sat and chatted, waiting for the brand-new iPhone. When we finally got into the store they had the boxed phones ready to hand us in nifty bags (I've still got mine), and it was really only until I was on the way out of the store, bag dangling from my arm, that I paused at a table filled with display models to get an idea of what I'd just bought.

They may do something similar with the Apple Watch or they may do preorders, but I wouldn't be surprised if they don't do preorders.....

I'm thinking because of the whole personal sale thing they want people to be able to try it on and spend some time with it if necessary. Success won't depend on whether there are 1000 people outside 5th Avenue that first day like an iPhone launch (spoiler alert, there won't be). This is a much softer sell. People need to see it and be convinced, but not too overtly, that they want this.

For that reason, I think Apple WILL do pre-sales. Let the people who know they want one have them right away so that they can let those on the fence have as much time as they need to justify their purchase. I think they want people to be able to walk in and spend a few minutes trying one on, perhaps trying on a few bands. That won't be possible if it's like an iPhone launch.

I'm dreaming of a staggered launch day. Wouldn't it be amazing if pre-orders could arrive a week before they have them in Stores? Give some value for those willing to buy sight unseen. Of course that would kill all of the news reports of how long lines are (if they get lines). I am hoping for the sake of people who want a watch for themselves that the lines in the big cities will not have thousands of cash buyers getting them to ship overseas. A worldwide launch will help avoid that.

It is also a much simpler sale without coordinating with cell phone companies. That alone is what would allow a staggered launch. They do not have to get 30 outside companies to coordinate their own world wide launches.

So we are sure these won't go one sale tomorrow?

(sorry, i'm not plugged into what is going on)

I think it's pretty much a given they won't go on sale tomorrow. Looking at past history Apple has never done that. Apple will either offer preorders at some point maybe this Friday or a later Friday or not do preorders and just put them on sale online and retail on launch day.

I doubt that Apple will do this, but let's suppose that the Apple Watch is still supposed to come out in April (and that the released date hasn't been pushed to March). That gives at least three weeks between the announcement and the release. iPhones and iPads tend to have preorders start a week before their release, so maybe it will be the same for the Apple Watch.

What if they're in stores starting sometime this week—not to purchase, but just to try on? This way, there won't be a problem with people taking a long time to decide which one to purchase on release day, and it will allow people planning to preorder to choose which size/band to buy without worrying about picking the wrong size. A move like this would be very unlike Apple, but then again, they've said many times that they need to treat the Watch differently because it's so personal.

I wouldn't bet on their being any pre-orders. It's a totally new product, one that is very personal. It would make sense that the vast majority of people would want to try on the sizes and band combos before buying. Apple wouldn't want to deal with all the returns because people didn't try it on first. Plus, pre-orders lead to shorter lines. Apple doesn't want that, especially with a new category.

That's a good point. Apple would want to cash in on all of the publicity lines would give them. Plus all of the returns would be a nightmare for people who pre-ordered and decided they wanted a different size.

You are forgetting that EVERY product Apple has ever sold for years has been available for online ordering before launch day. They need preorders in order to plan production AND to be able to boast about how many were sold on the first day or weekend. Don't forget that a HUGE number of Apple customers do not live within a 30 minute drive to an Apple store. It will be IMPOSSIBLE to generate big numbers on launch day without pre orders.

I'm remembering the Apple store being down during announcements. Sadly I am also remembering it is just to update the price pages with more product info and a note of when pre orders begin.

YES, you probably want to come in to try on some of the nicer bands but I am getting the sports band on my first one whether I get Sport or SS so no need to get fitted.

Also remember they won't have a thousand phone stores selling them the first day either.

The iPhone 5s wasn't available for pre-order, along with a few other models and a couple iPad models. I'm not saying there won't be pre-orders though, I was just agreeing with the point of the person I quoted.

Yes, it's compelling logic, I must say. If they do send these out sight unseen it would be something of a risk.

Then again, these are massed produced consumer toys, regardless of $$$$ :D

As mentioned already that's not true and not every product they have released has been available for preorder.

No pre-orders.

I don't think there will be pre-orders at all. It's a personal device. You need to try and choose. I can guarantee there will be plenty of people who will send back their watches or bands back and choose differently. I think they are aware of it and since their logistics thinking is great I think there will be no pre-orders.

EDIT: Didn't mentioned somebody has already said that. Sorry.

Same thing when the 6 and 6 Plus was announced. Those who preordered has to make a decision based on whatever they could read/see on the Internet. There will always be plenty of people who even try out the watch and still send back and exchange.

Some people will still make up their mind and preorder if the option is available. Doesn't mean apple wouldn't take preorders.

I think this time it's different.

Going to the next iteration of iPhone is a bit different than an all new category that is so personal and forward-facing. Not to mention there were a ton of people with buyer's remorse with the 6 Plus. I can only imagine the watch could be much worse.

i wouldnt be surprised if they do not even sell the high end models online. can u imagine shipping a 18k watch with fedex?

EVERYTHING works out better when you live in Hawaii (especially on Kauai)! ;)
