This has nothing to do with Apple or iPhones or even their competitors.

And once again I struggle to see the innovation in a generic android phone with some LEDs on the back that can flash in a particular pattern. You can buy a case for any phone which will do the same.

Has anyone bought one of these? Does anyone know someone who has? Are they good?

My guess is it's bought as a 'fashion phone' - it's recognisable to those who follow particular fashion tech websites and the owners are purely targeting company sell-off rather than any long term plans. They need to expand quickly and sell before the fad of buying this goes. Right now I'm sure they have good acceleration on Sales amongst some small demographic (younger people who have spare cash?) but this won't be sticky, and buyers will want something else next season that looks cool.

Who will still want a 'Nothing Phone' with flashy lights in 2024?
Its because MKBHD posted a YouTube video with clickbait tittle "Nothing Beats the iPhone"

lack of macOS integration
No one shopping for an Android phone cares about Mac integration. Android is still the number one OS market share based on web traffic, followed by Windows, which has very good Android integration. I’m not saying that the Mac-iPhone ecosystem isn’t good, but it’s not a selling point if you are part of the Windows majority.

Or the Android majority, for that matter.

Really? You think no Mac users use Android? I can guarantee you they do.

BTW, given that this article is about launching the nothing 2 in America you should check your stats for America and when you do you’ll find that Android at 23% comes in 3rd place, behind Windows and iOS (who are virtually tied at 30% a piece). Of course that’s also misleading since people tend to use desktop AND mobile OS devices so there’s overlap. And while macOS is in 4th, it’s not an insignificant 4th with 12%. That’s not the majority but it’s still a lot of people.

It's a cool phone.
If I had to get an android too I'd prefer a Pixel 7, but this is my second favourite.
That said, I wouldn't actually buy a phone like this as I don't like being flashy, and a phone like that is made to make a statement.

Sounds like you took this a tad personal 😏

I wrote a similar point but without the vast vigorous verbiage. 😎
Nice try at a "burn". 2/10 for effort.

I just think people are stupid and do stupid things with their money. I guess I don't have faith in consumers understanding what is and isn't predatory practice. Especially fanbois who seem to want to defend a trillion dollar company as if it were their own family for some inconceivable reason.

As for the "vast vigorous verbiage" (which is basically just astoundingly amateurish alliteration), I said what I intended to say without writing an essay.

I don't see anywhere where you have to build it yourself.
Hello and welcome to MR, I see you've joined not so long ago.

I'm just wondering why you've given almost everyone an "angry" like on this thread? I do invite you to actually take part in a discussion and perhaps point out exactly why you so vehemently disagree with everyone's statements here.

There's perhaps points you can raise that others haven't immediately thought of. Just an idea really. Right now it just seems that you're affiliated with this company but that's off course quite the assumption.

It reminds me of the Neon Phones

Vintage Loys Neon Light Lighted Rotary Telephone Phone Clear Plastic ...

Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing, really deserves credit for his marketing skills. Sure, this phone might be gimmicky, have unremarkable specs, and it probably won't get software support for very long, but tech sites and tech reviewers will still find every excuse to bring up Nothing phones despite no one else really caring about it.

And that's gotta count for something. 😎👉👉

Why are we getting news about a generic Android phone on a website dedicated to Apple News?

In other news: Kim Kardashian is wearing a new dress to some award show! All the latest and more about her will be discussed here on the iOS16 forum.

The founder of this company is founder of OnePlus, which is significant in Android space. So I won't say this is genetic Android phone.

I manage teams of mobile developers, so I have 10 Android phones and 5 iPhone models. The Nothing (1) is one of the Androids that I have, and is in all honesty my second favorite one. My favorite is the Pixel 7 Pro, and I like it for the pure Android experience without any bloatware in the way. The Nothing (1) is a close second - while it's got custom software running on it, it's very close to a pure Android experience.

If you ignore the "flashy" LED's, it's a very solid mid-range Android phone. It's peppy, it has decent battery life, and I've yet to see any issues with the software that we develop on this phone. The Samsung's and Sony Android phones... they're a mess. They're buggy, they slow down after a while, and they generally require more TLC than the Nothing and Pixel's.

TL;DR: Personal opinion is that the Nothing (1) is one of the best mid-Range Android phones out there. Would I pick it over an iPhone for my daily driver? Maybe - if I wasn't personally locked into the Apple ecosystem - but for your average person who wants a peppy, low-bloat phone with a more unique design aesthetic, it's pretty great. And the price - under $500 - is great for what it offers.

I wonder how much MacRumors is being paid to write stories about this phone, as if it matters. The smartphone market was over-saturated over a decade ago, and there's Zero chance this thing will put even the tiniest of dents in the market.

This is another Essential phone.... a phone I wished I never read about.

Spend too much time on the Verge, Engadget or the sheer multitudes of YouTubers who get paid to read press releases and you will end buying junk like the Essential phone and this Nothing phone that bought the IP of Essential.

iPhone forever... battery works, extremely difficult to shatter glass, no boot loops and people will actually buy it used.

Much ado about Nothing…

I can hear that Cupertino laughter all the way from Chicago
