I find this exciting news for the following reasons:

1. Decentralization of the market. Currently only a select few, and very large, companies are making phones. I find it amazing that a small start up made a phone that sold half a million units in its first attempt.

2. Competition is a good thing for the market. I hope this phone does well, though I imagine it won’t hurt iPhone sales as much as Samsung or Google.

3. While most of my computers are Mac and the few Windows machines I have are all name brands, I think it’s great that someone can go out and build a PC that is actually usable. If anything, this Nothing phone seems to be getting us closer to being able to self build a phone. I like the idea of choice and being able to design exactly what you want, at reasonable cost is the definition of market choice.

4. The current smartphone market is mature and saturated with similar features. It’s refreshing to see a company come out with something minimalistic and different.

5. Diversification away from Samsung and Google. Similarly to the aforementioned (#1) I think it’s good to have a company that isn’t Samsung or Google, whose business practices I find repugnant (Samsung practices patent violation and outright commercial espionage and Google makes their money commoditizing user data.) offering real world competition.

We will see if Nothing is really up to something when they take the leap and bet on the US market. I wish them the best of luck.

Well said, it’s amazing how negative the fanboyism is around here.

As a tech nerd myself I love stuff like this, who would actually want 1 or 2 companies only making cell phones? Imagine if there were only 2 or 3 car companies in the world and we only had a choice between a Prius or a Civic, no thanks!

We all know how competition works, and we all know how Apple can stagnate with the best of them unless forced to improve. Just look at the fiasco with the latest macs.

We need more of this, and more articles like this, thank you Macrumors for continuing to keep people reminded that there are other phones out there besides iPhones and Samsungs.

For the price, the non pro iPhones are pretty much behind every other phone in every hardware spec despite costing more. Do people really think Apple would innovate and push the latest tech in the iPhone pro’s if there wasn’t any competition??

I’m very interested to see their flagship, and if I haven’t spent all my money on eggs next fall I may pick up one of them if it’s better than the pixel 8 pro.

I wish nothing but great success for nothing and others like it, the world needs more competition, not less.

Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing, really deserves credit for his marketing skills. Sure, this phone might be gimmicky, have unremarkable specs, and it probably won't get software support for very long, but tech sites and tech reviewers will still find every excuse to bring up Nothing phones despite no one else really caring about it.

And that's gotta count for something. 😎👉👉

Sure, apart from the fact that their phones are the definition of supporting Right to Repair in that they are a completely open platform, with all the parts schematics being made available to repair joints unconditionally and also the fact that they run at a margin of just $50 per phone.

But yeah sure, bruh! You go on keep on floating Tim Apple's boat (well, more literally, luxury yachts) at $530 margin per baseline $1000 phone.

Is there some UK pronunciation of “Nothing” that separates it from the US meaning “of no consequence”

Nothing could become the new Apple. A small underdog company, that is able to think different and sells the Nothing phone. And it is only one Nothing phone - remember the day when there was one iPhone? And the iPhone did have all the latest and greatest from Apple. Now were already talking about features iP16 Pro might have - cause the iP15 is considered boring before it is even available.

Meanwhile Apple turned into an ugly Big Tech company, unable to move and unable to change. It has the iPhone and it struggles since all Apple has is the iPhone. The iPhone creates the money to build Apple Silicon. it drives the AppStore, Apple Pay - nearly everything. Without the iPhone - Apple would be nothing …

Does anyone know how durable the back is? Seems like it would suck if I accidentally dropped it and broke some of the LED lights. Looks like it would be a pain to get repaired / replaced. Too many things that could go wrong with it.

If anyone bought it for the LED lights then you will suffer worse battery life.

If the user puts 2 and 2 together they will turn it off almost all the time. Only turning it on to show to friends.

It will be a novelty phone unless the LED lights improves taking photos as a fill light but it would force users to hold their phone in a non-traditional way.

"When you make a smartphone for the U.S. you need to work with the carriers on certification and adapting some of their features into your OS”

And this is why iOS is going to have to get really bad before I consider Android again. Steve Jobs convincing the CEO of AT&T to leave the iPhone alone was one of his greatest achievements. Convincing them to not pollute a phone OS has never been done before or since.
