Activation fee of $18

Anyone notice that there is an additional Activation Fee of $18 when you preorder on apple.com (total of $36 including upgrade fee)?

If you preorder on Att.com, there is no additional $18 Activation Fee.

Did I miss something or you pay extra to go through apple.com?

This is in reference to a current 2g iphone owner upgrading a single line (with FAN account).

Your FAN account might wave the activation fee, but from my upgrade experience with AT&T, they will hit you with $36 when all is said and done. Maybe they don't charge the activation fee until you actually activate at the store or through iTunes.

Also, I pre-ordered through the Apple Store online, and although they mention the $36 in upgrade\activation fees, it is not being charge right away. It says it will show up on the next AT&T monthly bill.

Odd thing is, none of the ATT documentation (their facebook page, press release), seems to mention an activation fee. I believe that's only for new customers to ATT right?

Hmmm.... I think you are right:

Current AT&T customers who are upgrading to iPhone 3G will pay an $18 upgrade fee and new AT&T customers will pay the standard $36 activation fee.

Well, maybe the Apple store is wrong about the $36 dollar charge. Like I said, Apple store is not charging that $36 themselves. We will see when I get next month's AT&T bill.

Weird.

So I paid for my 32 GB iPhone 3G S with my debit card.

Now, there is DEFINITELY more than enough money to cover the $299 expense but here's the deal. I pre-ordered the phone on the 8th and the charge was posted to my BoA account as "pending". Now, I look this morning on my account and the charge is nowhere to be found. I look at my order status on Apple.com and it says everything if cool and the phone is waiting for shipment.

Anyone had this happen to them yet?

The purchase has not been charged to my credit card. Apparently, apple only wants to charge me tax till they ship or I receive my phone. I also did NOT get charged for the activation ($18) fee yet.

Let's hope so, otherwise I'd advise keeping an eye on your bill if you ordered from apple instead of ATT - you might get billed for an additional $18.

Most companies do not charge your card until the item ships. What was showing on your account was an authorization. A temporary charge to see if you have adequate funds in your account. Authorizations can stay in place anywhere from 3 to 14 days until they are released.

Woohooo! Mine's prepared for shipment!

The pending transaction will auto clear after a period of time, it is simular to the way the gas stations and restaurants do an initial reserve until they have the final amount to charge. Apple only charges you the phone when it is ready to ship. Don't look for the $18 or $36 fee from Apple, it will be on your first AT&T billing statement.

There is not an "Extra" fee from Apple. If you are a new customer you pay $36 (18+18). If you are an existing AT&T customer that is upgradiing you only pay the $18 Upgrade fee.

Does anybody else's order status from Apple site changed from "Not yet shipped" to something else? If so, please also mention the shipping you chose.
Btw, mine is standard shipping (ordered on 6/8).The status is still "Not yet shipped".

Mine now says "Shipped on Jun 15, 2009 via UPS"

I ordered mine on the 8th and accidentally canceled the order so I had to call Apple to reinstate the order for me. Oh, and I also chose the free shipping they offered.

You think if i pre-order the iPhone 3G S and it arrives to my house i can just throw in my sim card from my iphone 3g and it will work cuz im not eligible for an upgrade for another 10 months.march 10 2010 i think is the actual date.

Yes, popping in your SIM should work just fine.

I have a similar question...

I just ordered the 32gb 3GS. It is replacing my 3G. I got it at the discounted rate because we're on a family plan and my wife still has the 2G, so she was eligible for the $299 price.

The phone is being delivered this Friday. Can i just activate it on my Mac with my phone number? Or will they know the phone was for her line? I'm afraid that either activating it on my line won't work, or that it will work but will raise some kind of flag for them and they will charge me the $400 subsidy.

I know that at the very least I could activate it on her line an switch the SIMs, but I'd rather just be able to activate it on my line.

Any thoughts? Thanks!
