I started lifting weights so the heavier iPad 3 wouldn't be so noticeable and I'm going to drink some wine so I won't notice it being slower. :D

guys it IS faster, just not now at this moment, wait until the next software update comes out, the ipad 2 will start getting slower and slower just like the ipad 1 is with iOS 5 and guess what? the iPad 3 will STILL be fast while the other 2 models will be slower.

Uh. No.

As I understand it, the iPad.3 has the same processor as the iPad 2 except for some additional graphics cores.

The 10-million dollar question is whether the graphics chips are share memory with the main system (as many low end laptops do).

Either way, you wont' see an ipad.3 outperforming and ipad 2. The only thing to leverage is more RAM and software won't fix that.

Are you alling the macbook air an 13" macbook pro low end?

Who cares about a few nano seconds????

Hi guys

So, the first comparison videos are turning up, and it shows that the iPad 2 is actually faster overall than the new iPad.

I write this post, as I don't understand - It seems very un-Applely. Let's sum up: The new iPad is thicker, heavier and slower. Why is this? Was Apple simply forced to use this processor to preserve the 10 hour battery?

I genuinely want to understand this - Not trolling.

Results may vary...

I almost always leave my iPad on, so boot up speed is a non issue.

I think the battery is draining faster. Bummer. Apple should have at least made the battery life comparable to the ipad2.

we all know that these batteries require a couple discharge and recharge cycles to get them optimal. Give it a couple days.

It's thinner and lighter than the iPad 1 it's replacing here. I don't see what the issue is. How many people are actually upgrading from the iPad 2? It's still a great device. However just like going from the iPad 1 to the iPad 2 wasn't that big of an upgrade, jumping from the 2 to the 3 is the same thing. Lots of little improvements but for most it won't be worth the extra cost.

However skipping a generation, you get two years worth of improvements and it's awesome. I'm going from the wi-fi version to the 4G version and it is still thinner and lighter. You guys are arguing about something that is only going to affect a handful of users (and it will be barely noticeable to any of them anyway).

Oh, and most people throw them into big ass cases anyway, so really that minuscule weight and thickness increase is completely irrelevant.

Comparision with Apple site is really bad idea - Apple already updated it with retina graphics for new iPad, so new iPad is downloading much bigger version than iPad 2.

This.

I don't have mine yet, it is "on the truck for delivery" at the moment, but here's my take on this really meaningless (overall) thread....

This iPad is what I was hoping the iPad 2 would be. So if you're upgrading from iPad 1, you're in for a treat.... If you're like me upgrading from ipad2, you're also in for a treat, just have to realize though that sometimes you gotta make concessions to upgrade battery life to have LTE and drive a screen that gets that kind of resolution...

I mean c'mon.. here's a reality check... just try to find a computer monitor out there on the market that has anywhere upwards of 1920x1080.... Yeah, I'm even including the 1900x1200 ones which I have a few older ones of. Even those cost a lot more now cause of minimal production numbers. Now look at the price tag of just the monitor and in most cases it's more than the iPad. My 94" HD projector screen system which I absolutely love, well it's amazing I can have a device that blows that thing's resolution away basically in my hands. To me it's worth the resolution bump alone, and who cares about a few extra ounces here or there on a device that weight means nothing on anyway.

Gladly I have my iPad 2 still. I will record the time for a complete reboot (even if I never do it).

Then when I got my new iPad I will switch it off completely every evening and will stop the time it takes to be ready in the morning.

That's a great way to waste some time in the morning and to start the day on a negative note.

No, better, I will put it on full brightness in the evening and don't let the display turn off at all, so before I boot it up I will need to charge it first, that saves me from brushing my teeth, showering and when I arrive at work it is already time for lunch.

And I dont need to be afraid in the dark as the light bleeding makes a great night lamp.

Yes, but I imagine the iPads fractional weight gain for some of these 90lb weaklings is quite significant to them. They probably should be buying a membership to LA Fitness instead of carping about gadgets. And to their tiny baby hands, yes, an additional 1 mm is a lot, so have some compassion, please. :D

Hipsters are fragile apparently :p

I just genuinely don't understand why in the world you would release a product that is thicker, heavier and slower than its predecessor.

Normally, you wouldn't. But in this case, the other upgrades that necessitated a slightly thicker unit are huge upgrades. HUGE. I mean, you've got a display that is as clear as a page from a magazine, and a cellular connection that's as fast as a fiber optic landline, so yeah, I think an 8% thicker unit is an okay compromise in this specific case.

As for the speed, it's a wash. For basic processing tasks it will be the same speed (and the iPad 2 is still quite fast for me, a full year after buying one). For graphics, the 3 will be faster. And for any memory-intensive tasks that would have created lag before, that will be better too given the 1 GB RAM.

I just do not get all the bellyaching.

I have had all three iPads and when surfing the web on my iPad 3 I have found it remarkably faster than my iPad 2.

In fact I even had exchanged my iPad 2 because of this very issue. My iphone 4 and 4s were considerably faster on the web than my iPad 2 was. I would test this by sitting iphone next to iPad 2 and going to same web page and in all instances iPad 2 would be slower to populate the exact same web page .

I received my iPad 3 yesterday and instantly noted this difference between the iPad 2 and 3.

For the record I have both the iPad 2, and the new iPad at hand, and the new iPad seems just as fast if not faster! I loaded Infinity Blade II to demo the graphics performance and retina display for a few coworkers, and the new iPad was no slouch, and ran buttery smooth. I haven't been using the new iPad extensively just yet, but so far it has been running buttery smooth, and the retina display is just lust worthy on all accounts! :D

The 2012 iPad is supposed to perform on par with the iPad 2. Even though it is driving 4x the pixels, it should still perform similarly due to having the same central processor. The exceptions to the rule are on graphics intensive operations where the 2012 iPad will perform faster. If anything, there should be a drop in performance just due to rendering. I think Apple did a great job on the 2012 iPad and the performance is great. Safari has definitely gotten faster and also the mail app which seems to be loading image and html content very quickly.

??? Im not a WM person... I'm not an Apple person either. I will be buying this iPad because I love the design and the screen sounds amazing. But I do think the OS is showing its age. It IS noticbly slower than Windows Phone OS but this is a new OS and its expected. I just hope apple redesigns for iOS 6 because I love apples design and the app store is second to none!

So calm down please... Can I not have an opinion?!

No you can have an opinion, people tend to be whiny babies. I might not respect your opinion, hell i might even take your opinion and from it surmise that you are the epitome of stupid, but i would never take away someones right to have an opinion or voice it wherever they please. Also, the screen doesn't sound amazing, you must be referring to the speaker, the screen looks amazing though. ;P

Really? Try running Real Racing HD at 2048x1536 on both the iPad 2 and the new iPad and see if...

Oh, wait...

Yeah, I agree... the iPad 2 is slow. Unusable. I mean, it's unbelievable that people think the iPad 2 is fast and that a new device with many new features that is just as fast is okay... ...that's just terrible.

This is going to be hell. Safari will once again start up in 0.2 s, and I was really expecting Safari to at least start up in 0.1 s or less.

Apple really screwed up: giving us only LTE, an extremely high resolution display, a good camera and only giving us better loading times when you play or load a game. I mean, the real issue here is that Safari won't start up in 0.1 s but in 0.2 s just like before.

I believe both of you didn't evaluate the situation correctly. However, this is mostly directed at ThatsMeRight.

I did not say that the iPad 3 wasn't a good upgrade. I did not say that the iPad 2 or 3 was "slow" (though I do think there's room for improvement - just like there always is with technology). I did not say that Apple should've made it faster, or act as if I, as a simple consumer, was obligated to get an iPad that is speedier to use.

disappoint - fail to fulfill the hopes or expectations of (someone)

I wished (and still wish) that the iPad 3 was faster. There's a good chance I expected it too (seeing as that's how basically all their other product revisions work...), but I did not discount any of the other new features.

It was actually more a response to the topic title ("The iPad 3 is SLOWER?!") and I was under the impression you were supporting that motion.

It's not faster, but it's not slower either. That's all I was trying to say.

Here is a new epic iPad 3 comparison http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMKaX3izVWg
There are actually a lot of inconsistencies. One of them is that some are actually starting earlier or later than the others. Also, at one point they are going to compare loading times (opening apps): they are loading the iPhone version on the iPad 1 and iPad 2, but they are loading Flight Control HD on the iPad 3.

There are more of these inconsistencies (just to point out another one: they are not all identical - you can't compare iOS 3 vs iOS 4 vs iOS 5 booting and loading times. And you definitely can't compare loading times if they all have different settings and apps loaded on them.
