I'm normally geared up for the minimum for these events, but the 3.0 software launch was actually a pleasant surprise. Apple threw in everything we wanted.

The iPhone could be a minor upgrade with a video camera but no video calling, or they could release something amazing. Maybe the 3.0 software will carry over to hardware, and they will actually release a device that people will really want like they did in 3.0...

I'm with the OP, realistically apple will make their announcement on the new iphone tomorrow and it will only bring it up to date with other smart phones circa 2006 by adding the simplest of features (video, MMS, copy/paste, etc)....

I remember last year wanting to get blown away on a massive upgrade with the iphone, but 3G (which should have been there in the first place) and an unreliable GPS just wasn't anything we hadn't seen before in other phones...after the lukewarm announcement last year i tried to think of the last time i was blown away by an apple announcement, and outside of the initial announcement for the iphone (jan 07), i can't think of another time.

I've become conditioned to being disappointed with apple and these types of announcements...

yes, i do believe that 3.0 will be cool, i'm not sure how it will work with my 3G, but a speed bump in the processor and a new camera isn't worth an upgrade....

-just read my post, wow do i sound like a douche....i do like my iphone, just wish it was ahead of the curve instead of following it.....

I feel the same way. Only this time, I've already prepared myself to be disappointed when I read that the EDGE phones won't be able to MMS. And I'm left with a WTF look on my face, knowing that EDGE phones in the past could do MMS with no problem. But, whatever deal Apple has with AT&T, were left with yearly hardware updates and software updates forcing you to upgrade for a feature that should have and could have been there from jump.

Oh well. I think I'm losing my deep interest in everything Apple and the "latest and greatest" anyway. It's not just the hope-turned-to-questions but the fact that Apple doesn't care what users say or want. They will say they do, as all companies do, but really they don't. Things like landscape SMS, change SMS ringtones, better bluetooth, etc have been ignored to this point. And tomorrow we will get a black mock turtleneck dude introducing landscape SMS and Apple has innovated the way text messaging is done!

:D I love WWDC eve.

Now if they could just fix the rest of my nitpicks...

-Allow phone calls and SMS to take place on top of running applications. Just like double-clicking the home button to change songs while in the middle of something else. I don't want to have to restart my application for a 15 second task. (This could be done without allowing system wide multitasking).

-Ability to hide keyboard in SMS while reading past dialog. Simply tap the conversation area to hide Keyboard.

The only thing stopping my from buying BiteSMS is seeing if Apple introduce these in 3.0

I'm quite looking forward to WWDC, definitely not buying a new iPhone but I'm excited for new software.

A friend who I see very rarely a few days ago, while examining my iPhone:

It doesn't do proper bluetooth does it?

Me, deeply shamed, but but but I can twitter from it and play the Sims and and you can email me files *awkward pause* yeah Apple buggered its bluetooth

I read a lot of people saying that the updates will only put things on the phone that should have been there to start with, I have had both versions of the phone and missing certain things has never made me feel like the phone is unusable (more, nice to haves...). If the iphone does what you want it to do then great. If it is missing features that you think should be there then get a phone that has those features.

My goodness, last year's iPhone included the upgrade to 3G, GPS, and what turned out to be the biggest addition, the Apps Store. Hey, *I* was blown away by the upgrade. I'm not an Apple evangelist but even with its missing features the 3G is a great phone.

And no matter what's announced today, you'll all be in line the the new phone anyhow in early July ... :D

Yeah, it's definitely the best phone I've ever had, but it was also a typical Apple thing that it was missing basic stuff like MMS. My first mobile, 2004 (I was late to the game) could do that. I think people are just fed up that these updates aren't expected to be anything new or exciting (like say the App store) they're all just mobile phone basics.

But for my point of view, I'd rather of had the App store for the past year than C&P and MMS.

No doubt the App Store was huge but that had nothing to do with the phone itself. Apple just took what the jailbreak community was doing and made it legit.

I will be upgrading in December but, get this: it's not because I really WANT to. Apple is not letting MMS work with the EDGE iPhone, correct? So, in order to even use that feature I need a new phone. And I'm sure there will be some other things that (without relying on hardware) Apple will require at least a 3G for.

Quite a few people have said 3.0 will only bring the iPhone up to current iPhones. I agree that some features lagged, but other have been ahead. The media playback and media platform is top notch. The application store has leaped ahead of most every other manufacturer. Some games are on par with dedicated gaming handhelds. The web browser still ranks among the best, if not the best.

So by Apple adding the remaining "expected" features. And if the video and camera are as good as people predict, Apple will put the iPhone undoubtedly toward the top of the list. All that's really missing is multitasking and Apple hasn't been silent about that - they've admitted they made a design decision, at the risk of losing some customers.

I don't want to have to restart my application for a 15 second task. (This could be done without allowing system wide multitasking).

-The ability to put a point of contact on my lock screen in case my phone is lost.

-The ability to delete Apple's apps which I never use.

-Why must alarms be organized by their time. This was started in 2.0, allow me to drag and drop them in the order I want them. I don't need a 5am alarm that runs once a month to be the first thing on my list, it should actually be the last.

-Allow alarms play music like iPod.

-Allow users to set snooze length.

-More features to the alarms application, such as silence text messages from midnight to 8am.

-Allowing setting custom alert tones per contact for SMS and Voicemail alerts.

-Wirelessly sync pertinent data when on a home network.

-Allow some alarms to ignore the silent switch. I my not want my phone to ring at the movies; but if I forget to flip my silence switch off, I definitely want to wake up for work the next morning.

-Don't reorganize my apps after a restore. Restore my phone, re-sync my apps and the use my restore data to put the application back where they were.

-If "Double-click the home button for: iPod controls" is set to on, make a third option which corresponds with the double-click home's normal function. Example: [Close] [iPod] [Camera] or [Close] [iPod] [Search] or [Close] [iPod] [Phone Favorites]. Right now there are too many steps when the only options are [Close] and [iPod].

-Divide the iPhone's iPod application into the iPod touch's Video and Music applications. This is simply a personal choice, but after using an iPod touch, I like it better.

-Allow mail rules in MobileMe which are then ran before they reach my phone.

-Provide a choice to not autorotate screen per application or system wide. Or lock screen rotation.

-Allow editing of dictionary to erase words which were erroneously entered.

-Ability to hide keyboard in SMS while reading past dialog. Simply tap the conversation area to hide Keyboard.

-Place a scroll-bar in other apps. I don't want to flick through 300 pages in a PDF. This is already available in some applications but needs to be in more, flicking gets old and tiring.

- Allow creating smart playlists on phone. When syncing with the computer new songs are added that match criteria. At least allow recently added and least heard options on iPhone. Also, allow all library songs to be viewed on the iPhone, perhaps with a show all button. I often want a song that isn't on my phone, it'd be great to flag it to be sync'd next time.

-Easy way to passcode lock the iPhone. If I have my default passcode lock time set to 15 minutes, I may want to passcode lock (not just sleep) my phone immediately if for example turning the phone in while entering a secure area at work.

-Allow renaming on the go playlists via iPhone.

-Allow easier managing of iPhone with multiple computers. Perhaps by syncing playlists with Mobileme. I have more than one Mac.

-Sync URLs from cal events to iPhone.

-Allow toggling of different calendars. Currently it's all or one, I want to consistently see four calendars while hiding the rest unless I need some specific information.

wow, thats alot of gripes you have lol

I'm curious if there are things the new phone will be able to run that the 3G cannot due to the faster processor. WIll there be new apps that are "4G iPhone required?"

I think the focus will be on new uses of the SDK. We'll likely have presentations with the likes of multiplayer games, accessories, compass, vido editing and fingers crossed turn by turn GPS.

Yes there will be new hardware, but Apple's whole drive is towards promoting the software platform rather than get into hardware spec comparisons.

I'm hoping for 3.0 released immediately, followed in few weeks by the new phone and a plethora of new accessories.

ALL i want is a 32gb iphone. SO hopefully that will definatly happen and I wont be dissapointed. I have never had a ipod or an iphone and I want an iphone sooo bad but told myself to wait til theres at least 32gb to get one. I CANT WAIT MUCH LONGER aggghhh lol

They've already encountered this problem with the touches that run about 100mhz faster(i think). Im pretty sure the apps just scale down the graphics or whatever else is processor intensive.

You can only be disappointed if you have too high expectations. What I think will happen:
- New iPhone, matte back, double the storage capacity, AF camera + video recording, digital compass, maybe slightly better battery life.
- Some new 3.0 features we haven't heard of before (probably because they would hint too much at a new iPhone).

Besides this I expect nothing major.

Unless you care about the camera, particularly given the lens on a phone), increased processor speed, lots of storage, the magnetometer or video on your phone, this isn't a big hardware upgrade.

Personally, none of the above excites me and I seem to be far from alone in that. 2MP is fine for my camera phone and 3MP isn't going to make it a great camera. No phone will touch my D-Lux 4 as a pocketable camera in the foreseeable future.

Now 3.0, that's another story. Notifications and background multitasking are very high on my list. I'm reasonably sure we'll see this released today or very very soon. It's time.

The new iPhone is rumoured to include autofocus, which is a BIG leap forward in terms of picture quality. For a person who uses the camera a lot (me): that's a dealbreaker ladies!

Even if Apple was to announce every feature ever wanted by mankind, there would still be dissapointment.

I bet you will change ur mind when you see how the new iPhone performs compared to the older 3G one(difference is performance will be shown in the keynote).

I am with you on that, minus the waiting in line thing. 3G, GPS, and the App Store were fantastic additions, and I never felt like my iPhone was lacking in any department besides *maybe* landscape SMS. And since I have been using the iPhone 3.0 BETA for a LONG time now, I am even more excited for this update, no matter how minor it is because 3.0 is looking great.

I was never one of those people who got the iPhone and just complained about it missing X Y and Z and how its behind the curve and blah blah blah. To me those people are silly, why did they buy it to begin with? Research, then buy. There is a difference between suggesting ideas, and complaining. Too many people here are on the complaining end of the spectrum when it comes to the iPhone... yet they own one.

At any rate, I am excited no matter.

Exactly, thats the nature of people. They could make the iPhone make your bed, but people would complain that it doesn't put a mint on your pillow.
