President Trump will today announce that Apple will invest an additional $100 billion to support manufacturing in the United States (via Bloomberg).

The announcement is reportedly set to include a new manufacturing program to bring more of Apple's supply chain into the U.S. Apple CEO Tim Cook will appear alongside the President later today.

Apple has already announced $500 billion for US manufacturing over the next four years, including a new server manufacturing plant in Houston, a supplier academy in Michigan, and additional spending with domestic suppliers. Today's $100 billion takes Apple's total commitment to $600 billion.

The Trump administration has had a contentious relationship with Apple, threatening 25% tariffs on the company if it failed to move iPhone manufacturing to the United States. The latest announcement appears to be a detente in the relationship between the administration and the company.

Here in Columbus and central Ohio, a few years ago Intel announced plans for a major facility. They continue to delay and reduce those plans.

Hopefully Apple will be able to follow through, but manufacturing high tech products (at a price people are willing to pay!) is a real challenge, as you guys already know.

When are people going to realize that tariffs are a tax on poor people? The rich don't care about tariffs because they have more than enough wealth to absorb 15-30% increase on goods. So their laptop now costs $1,500 instead of $1000. Big deal. They don't care. They won't even notice. Meanwhile their tax cuts from The Big Beautiful Bill will actually make an impact.

The vast majority of tariffs paid will come from poor people because there are hundreds of millions of them and they all need to eat, sleep, drive, buy goods. They can't avoid it. They have to continue to live. And living costs more now due to the tariffs.

The revenue from tariffs will be used to for funding the federal government (and paying back government debt) while the rich get a tax break. The rich gets their tax lowered. The revenue has to come from somewhere else. Tariffs. Poor people.

It's another transfer of wealth. Tax the poor. Disguised as a way to bring back manufacturing (no one wants to work in factories sewing shoes). No one is bringing back manufacturing. They'll "announce" investments but they won't be building factories.

Even if you're MAGA, just do some basic logic. You'll arrive at the same conclusion. Unless you're part of the rich. Then congrats. This is probably amazing for you.

100% PR. If Apple announces something it will be worded in such a way that Trump can crow about it. My guess is it will probably be some supplier that Apple is helping to fund.

Edit: news reports say Tim Cook will be at the White House. Wow he really is looking for special treatment on tariffs.

One of the “features” of final assembly outside of the USA is the ability to surge production for roll-outs. Labor laws in the USA would be a barrier to this.

Pragmatically, if production in America was economically feasible, it would already be a thing—not just for Apple, but virtually every other company.

Sounds like a lot of money, but how many jobs will this mean (not counting bankers and lawyers)?

Or is this investment in hiring folks to work the fields of CA?

We have already been heading towards a successful future as a post-industrial nation. Although I bemoan the death of unions, we can be just fine as an information, invention and services economy. The whole thing about bringing heavy manufacturing back here is a waste of time.
