Trump's tactic is blackmailing. I wouldn't want to be in Cook's shoes. I wonder what will Cook trade for what he wants from Trump. This isn't good...
Curious what John Gruber will have to say if Cook is at a White House ceremony with Trump.

This is the new game, want exemptions of tariff, pay the fee.... this is foolish games and will result in stupid prizes down the road for Americans. The idea you can meddle with economics and make this move on a dime is a fools errand but mmk America good luck

Ten years out. No announcements yet of ground breaking. I figure Cook (or his replacement) will delay the big ticket items to see what happens with the midterm elections and maybe even to see who replaces Trump.

Indeed, appease the Mango Musolini for now to keep business rolling. No need to do anything rash (eg the opposite the way the government appears to work). He's easy to manipulate into being on your side, a few compliments and he's happy.

Then just play the time game.

When are people going to realize that tariffs are a tax on poor people? The rich don't care about tariffs because they have more than enough wealth to absorb 15-30% increase. There are also way fewer rich people.

The vast majority of tariffs paid will come from poor people because even poor people need to eat, sleep, drive, buy goods.

It's another transfer of wealth. Tax the poor. Disguised as a way to bring back manufacturing (no one wants to work in factories sewing shoes).

Exactly.

Tariffs should be called "Import Taxes"

Because that's what they are... taxes on imported goods, supplies, and materials. And people pay it.

That should wake people up!

How much of is this placating this administration, that will never amount to anything after it leaves in 3 1/2 yrs?

This is just basic math..

If Apple sells 60 million iPhones at an average cost of $400, and they are able to reduce the tariffs by just 5% (thus, $20) through negotiation, that saves them $1.2 BILLION a year...or $100 million a month. And that's just the iPhone.

So one month savings ($100 million) to build a facility to manufacture...whatever...even if it makes FineWoven MacBook cases that nobody buys...that $100 million is the best investment Apple can make. Moreover, it is a facility that can be repurposed or sold at a later date...unlike a paid tariff.

Granted, $100 billion is several orders of magnitude more than $100 million...but any money going into investment rather than tariffs is just good business sense. And these investments won't all happen at once - it takes years to find land, build facilities, acquire equipment, and train employees.

All robot manufacturing and minimal hiring of manpower. There is no way Tim will pay 10 times salary to manufacture Apple products.
There is no way we are going to spend ten times the prices to buy a phone made in the USA. I'm happy it's partially designed in the USA.

This whole timeline would be somewhat humorous if it wasn’t so depressing.

I’m just blown away how broken and going in the wrong direction the US is.

The lying, the gaslighting, the total BS, the anti science, anti knowledge, anti institution, anti regulation (even when it’s helping people!)…

…and now everyone bowing before a corrupt, morally bankrupt, authoritarian pedophile.

In 2000, when celebrating the millennium, I never would have guessed “this” would have been 2025 what looks like.

Trump will be gone in less than four years, so I'm assuming this is all just words for now, and for the forseeable future. And that's fine. (And if Trump hasn't gone by then, the US and Apple will have far, far bigger problems to deal with).
not too get political, but I don't think he will be gone. there is a major effort to gerrymander several states to keep power. I'm scared we've crossed into a dictatorship already and they just haven't officially announced it yet.

Well remember the Red half does not want government to govern. It’s all about unfettered freedom. No rules at all. At least until it starts to infringe on their rules.

We're already in a dictatorship. When the rest of the country realizes it, it will be too late.

Trump may or may not be gone, but MAGA unfortunately, is here to stay.

I was going to say -- we are way past worrying about "getting political"

Folks better start doing that fast, or it's all going to be way too late.

It has taken world wars to pull out of these directions and I see nobody coming to "save us".

Unless Trump forces the building of the manufacturing buildings in the next 3 years it wont make a blind bit of difference because when there is a new election and a new president sworn in, he or she will undo all of what Trump has done, the tariffs will go and US businesses will give a sigh of relief.

Trump will NOT be gone in less than 4 years unless he dies on the job. But the damage has already been done and there’s little we can do to reverse.

Apple may finally can build the manufacturing center in US but whichever way they choose hiring people will be a massive challenge: sweatshop style no one wants to come to work. High tech advanced manufacturing style there won’t be enough qualified people in US to operate and maintain those robots and machines. And remember, migration will not be a thing.
