I was going to say -- we are way past worrying about "getting political"

Folks better start doing that fast, or it's all going to be way too late.

It has taken world wars to pull out of these directions and I see nobody coming to "save us".
Quite the contrary, I can clearly see several key figures having their popcorns ready to see the show as we struggle to pull ourselves out of dictatorship.

Unless Trump forces the building of the manufacturing buildings in the next 3 years it wont make a blind bit of difference because when there is a new election and a new president sworn in, he or she will undo all of what Trump has done, the tariffs will go and US businesses will give a sigh of relief.
Nah. Regardless of who sworn in after 3 years (could very well be trump 3.0 again), Apple doesn’t really need to rush.

All robot manufacturing and minimal hiring of manpower. There is no way Tim will pay 10 times salary to manufacture Apple products.
Except, Apple needs qualified engineers and technicians to control and maintain those robots. Where are those people from? Migration is dead at this point and education system has been gutted to oblivion.

I’m all for American production as I don’t think we should be paying lower labor rates as I feel it’s taking advantage of poorer countries or should I say countries with lax labor laws.

I’d happily pay for a phone or device but it would be on the basis I keep it longer.

Exactly.

Tariffs should be called "Import Taxes"

Because that's what they are... taxes on imported goods, supplies, and materials. And people pay it.

That should wake people up!
I secretly want countries launching retaliatory tariffs to add their own export tax when exporting to US as well. Dunno how that would work but it sounds fun.

I get Americans are resilient. But with that, even the most resilient could break. Of course this doesn’t matter to rich people and trump can always exempt them from import taxes.

Gruber summed it up perfectly

Tim Cook, yesterday on X at 1:14pm:

Congratulations President Trump on your victory! We look forward to engaging with you and your administration to help make sure the United States continues to lead with and be fueled by ingenuity, innovation, and creativity.

I wonder how much Cook dithered over that cheerful-looking exclamation mark. I hope he regrets it. I wonder whether the latter four knowingly made the error of addressing former president and president-elect Trump as “President Trump”. Our nation only has one president at a time, and that president remains Joe Biden. I wonder how much it stings to be reminded that all the money in the world cannot buy dignity. I wonder too, what taste Cheetos-dusted 78-year-old testicles leave in one’s mouth. Whatever the flavor, I hope it lingers.

Isn't it awkward that so many here are negative about Trump, yet have the country voted for him?

Because he lies relentlessly.

When you lie to people, they are not voting for what you're actually going to do.

(remember him lying about Project 2025? Claiming he knew nothing of it and it had nothing to do with him ... yet his administration has literally installed the plan, point by point.)

$100b is not much if you consider the US spent more on Ukraine. The revamp manufacturing it will begin in the Trillion$ as investment but in the end corporations won't support because it's too expensive and too many restrictions and red tape here. This is just political theater and both parties play this game.

It seems to me, that he really means it this time. He will keep tormenting Tim Cook until the first production facility for iPhones opens in the US, no matter how bad the economics of it may be.

There is literally nothing you can do to satisfactorily assuage dictatorial regimes.

It's like dealing with the mob.

Give an inch, they want a mile.... give a mile, they want ten miles... and so on.

Trump has strange priorities.

With all the things going on in the United States... "making iPhones in the US" should be far down on the list.

I remember when "immigrants eating dogs and cats" was his biggest concern...

🤣

Apple shouldn't have to pay any higher tariffs whatsoever on anything it buys, after this generous gift to the US.

Yes, I agree. Trump's lying is out of control. I am thinking back to when I would feel about Steve Jobs how MAGA feels about Trump. But I probably would not like Steve Jobs if he lied during his Keynotes and no longer be a MAGA Steve Jobs admirer.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRESIDENT TRUMP ANNOUNCES $100 BILLION MANUFACTURING INVESTMENT FROM “TIM APPLE,” DECLARES IT “THE BIGGEST THING ANYONE HAS EVER DONE, EXCEPT ME”

Washington, D.C.
— In a surprise press conference held in the newly rebranded “Oval Office Presented by Truth Social,” President Donald J. Trump today announced that Tim Cook — whom he affectionately referred to as “Tim Apple” — will be leading Apple’s $100 billion investment in U.S. manufacturing, a move Trump called “the greatest manufacturing announcement in the history of the Country, probably the world, but I don’t like to brag.”

“This is a very big deal. Very big. Tim Apple is making the biggest investment in American manufacturing — EVER. People are saying it’s even bigger than the moon landing. And I said, ‘Of course it is — we’re bringing jobs back. The moon doesn’t make iPhones, folks.’”

According to President Trump, the investment will include:

  • “Gigantic” factories in “all the great states”
  • New lines of iPhones “made with freedom, not communism.”
  • Thousands of American jobs for “real patriots, not the ones who drink soy lattes.”
When a reporter asked for specifics, the President responded: “Look, we’ve got the best numbers. Tim called me — personally — and said, ‘Sir, no one has ever made us invest $100 billion before. Not Obama. Not Sleepy Joe. Only you, Sir. You are the Jobs President, and I don’t mean Steve.’ That’s a direct quote.”

Apple, when reached for comment, released a brief statement reading, “We are still trying to confirm whether this actually happened.”

The press conference ended when President Trump unveiled a prototype of the new “iTrump Phone,” a gold-plated iPhone with a built-in Truth Social app and a ringtone that plays “God Bless the U.S.A.” on loop. He then walked off humming “YMCA” and pointing skyward.

When are people going to realize that tariffs are a tax on poor people? The rich don't care about tariffs because they have more than enough wealth to absorb 15-30% increase. So their laptop now costs $1,500 instead of $1000. Big deal. They don't care. They won't even notice. Meanwhile their tax cuts from The Big Beautiful Bill will actually make an impact.

The vast majority of tariffs paid will come from poor people because there are hundreds of millions of them and they all need to eat, sleep, drive, buy goods. They can't avoid it. They have to continue to live. And living costs more now due to the tariffs.

The revenue from tariffs will be used to for funding the federal government (and paying back government debt) while the rich get a tax break. The rich gets their tax lowered. The revenue has to come from somewhere else. Tariffs. Poor people.

It's another transfer of wealth. Tax the poor. Disguised as a way to bring back manufacturing (no one wants to work in factories sewing shoes). No one is bringing back manufacturing. They'll "announce" investments but they won't be building factories.

Even if you're MAGA, just do some basic logic. You'll arrive at the same conclusion. Unless you're part of the rich. Then congrats. This is probably amazing for you.
This is incorrect as you are equating tariffs with a flat tax and the two are completely unrelated. Markets determine pricing through demand, not import fees. Apple cannot raise iPhone prices beyond what the market values them and would instead likely absorb a small hit to margin to protect their market share while aggressively trying to lower production and unit costs. This is not a rich/poor thing and Apple’s recent domestic US investment announcements are an effort to minimize any import exposure and strike a deal with the Treasury/Commerce departments.

I thought that when they assembled one of their Macs in Texas several years ago they had quality issues with the machines.
