Of course there isn't. I don't think there will be a major change but I could see a little band aid type fix coming up. Maybe adding a clear coat or something to the bevel.

Does anyone think there is still some truth to that NYT article from last night? What if Apple is still looking if there is a software problem? Maybe they can't talk about it today because they don't want to make any promises?

I just wonder if they are still looking at more software tweaks to help the problem a little more instead of completely fixing it?

Btw, I am happy with their response today. If your happy with your phone: good. If you have signal problems, here is a free case! Or just return the phone.

People complaining about it know they want to keep this beautiful phone and do not want to give it up at any cost. People who are truly upset will just return it.

I didn't read where it said there would be a hardware solution after the 30th...just that if you've already purchased an iPhone at this point you have until 9/30/10 to come in for a free bumper or credit for one you've already purchased

Steve just answered someone that no hardware changes are coming. I'd bet the fix will be iPhone 5.

Read the answer again. He dodges the question and never says "no."

"You know, the 3GS has the same problem. We're getting reports from customers that this is better than the 3GS. So I don't know changing the antenna design would help -- I don't know what our next antenna design will look like."

It sounded to me that you get one free bumper or case (or refund if you've already bought one), not an infinite supply until 9/30.

I think you misread what I meant. I know you only get one free bumper per phone. I am saying "Why is the the bumper free only until sept 30th?" Why wouldn't they just give a free one away to every iphone 4 user even after sept 30th?

Agreed. By September 30 this will have blown over.

Don't shoot the messenger, but I surmise it's because Jobs presented data that showed the i4 was comparable to the other brands out there - in other words, it's an industry-wide problem.

edited to add, Jobs just said they will "reevaluate" on September 30 to see if they will continue giving out free bumpers. I believe they should.

Interesting

"On the September 30th date, is that to let people know that you'll have to buy a case?
Steve: Not really, we'll reevaluate then. Maybe we'll have a better idea. Maybe Eminem will come out with a band-aid that goes over the corner and everyone will want that."

He certainly sounds defensive. I am guessing they will either have the antenna of every new iPhone 4 in circulation by that date insulated.

OR they will simply have redesigned the packaging of the phone to accommodate for a bumper. I guess color choice could make that a PIA with all the different SKUs.... hmmm...

They might even still give out free cases after Sept 30 purchases. It is just to buy more time for right now.

No reimbursement for 3rd party cases. Is it because Apple get cases for $1.00 and they don't want to fork out $30+ for something that then can acquire much cheaper?

I think Steve just leaked the 2011 Apple slogan:

Apple - We are where the rest of industry is right now.

If he compares the iPhone 4's antenna to 'the rest of the industry' one more time I swear I'll never buy another Apple product again in my lifetime.

ADMIT. YOUR. SHORTCOMINGS.

The antenna is NOT where the rest of the industry is because YOU decided it'd be better form factor to wrap it around a steel band on the outside of the phone. That's not where the rest of the industry is.

You can't take a MAJORITY (ie: 'rest') of the industry's phones and put your finger gently to the side and make it lose every ********* bar on the phone until it drops the call. You can't.

Stop saying you can. Stop it, Steve.

*fuming mad at his arrogance right now*

haha oh the irony as the press conference was going
fed ex showed up at the door with my bumper that i order 3 weeks ago haha gotta love Apple!

Followed the conference with dismay. What an apology of an apology!
We look to Apple to be class leaders - now it seems as if they are comfortable for their items to be on a par with others in the industry.
Sorry Steve I expect more & I expect better! I don't want a ****** case for a phone that costs a grand over two years. Form over function - maybe the Jonny Ives mantra has become as thin as the King's new clothes!
