Someone correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Apple hold their iPod Media EVent September 1st last year? I mean what about the iPods??? The classic needs an update and they need to bring back the 2009 Nanos with the click wheel. Hopefully we hear something this week about an announcement.

iPods are on their way out. Since this year is the 10th anniversary, there will probably be an update, but maybe it's last hoorah. I think the touch will become extinct and replaced by a low cost, prepaid iPhone.

I believe we should be seeing a presentation at the end of September, and the iPhone 5 being released in the beginning of October.

That's crazy.

Not everyone wants a phone, nor wants to sign a contract for a smart phone. Apple would lose those customers. They will ALWAYS have iPods in my opinion. They just won't focus on them. That haven't focused on them in forever anyways. They really haven't done any MAJOR iPod releases in like 2 years, unless you count the Nano Touch.

I'm with Mike, iPods aren't going anywhere. I work at a rec center for teens and most of them have iPod touches. iPod touches are the lesser, ultimately cheaper, version of an iPhone. Some people are on contracts with companies that won't be getting the iPhone, or just don't want an internet plan and are fine with just using their phone as a phone and carrying an iPod touch as well. As long as the iPods maintain even with iPhone (minus the 3g, the phone and GPS) the iPods aren't going anywhere.

As for the date, I don't know but I personally believe (mostly just a strong hope) that apple wouldn't insult us with a lousy refresh after making us wait 15 months. If it was just going to be minor things I think they would have made it available sooner, to make everyone wait and then offer a device that's just a little refresh would surely make them loose sales now more than ever with Android phones barking at Apple feet. I think Apple knows they need something bigger to bring people back to iPhones now that they'll be available on all of the major US carriers. After all that's why android got big, it was an alternative to the iPhone for those who couldn't get the iPhone. Now that they CAN get the iPhone apple needs a big phone to do the part.

This :) .Why people keep telling that Apple will stop the ipods and ipod touchs.I read somewhere in macrumors yesterday that the iPod touch is the 1/3 of the iOS devices sold.Apple is smart

If you read the rest of my post you will see that I mentioned a prepaid, no contract device. What I was basically referring to was an iPod touch with the ability to add phone minutes. iPod's are whats doomed. A touch is much more then just an iPod. I just think the iPod touch is going to exist as a prepaid iPhone.

actually i don't see this happening. Not everyone wants to have an iPhone.

I don't get it... why would Apple phase out iPods if they're still making Apple money? Last quarter, they sold 9 million iPods (albeit, declining in sales), but that's still way more than Apple TV units sold. And Apple's not planning on discontinuing Apple TV at all. If they would rather keep an unpopular Apple product (Apple TV) as a hobby rather than phase it out, I highly doubt they would ever just call it quits on their iPods when 8 million more iPods are sold per quarter than Apple TVs.

The only remote possibility is that they might streamline the line up by just keeping iPod classic and iPod touch... maybe. Or something of the likes.

The point of the iPod touch is to appeal to users who want an iPhone-like device, but maybe don't want an iPhone because they already have a phone or can't afford prepaid plans or Verizon/AT&T plans.

Because of this, I don't see why people are saying it will be on it's way out soon (agreeing with Nicolas4ever).

thanks!i have bought an iPhone last year.but now i only have iPod touches because i feel much better having a cheaper version and upgrading when i want than having an iPhone that costs a lot and be like dont touch it,it will get fingerprints or whatever.
I prefer iPod touches because has all the featires of the iPhone with some changes and i like that is thin.To end the story we will see an ipod touch this year and the next one and the other years :D

this is what I think:

on the 7th invites will go out
on the 14th the press event at which iOS5 GM will be released
then on the 21st iOS5 released to public

why? because apple said iOS5 will come in autumn and the 21st is the first day of autumn and the public release of iOS GM is normally 7 days after announcement of said GM.

not a clue on device dates.

Soon. In the course of the next month they'll definitely send out invites.

"sometime in the next month" isn't cutting it with me. Lol! I want the phone in my pocket sometime in the next month. I still firmly believe that invites will go out this upcoming week, or early the following week at latest. At least I'm praying it goes down like that. At this point all I want to do is see it. I don't care if they hold the launch off for a month after they announce as long as I know what it's going to be. Just show us already!! The suspense is killing me...Just the way Apple wants it. Enough already. IT'S TIME!

Of course. As I said, there are those who want that iPod, touchscreen, apps, etc, but they don't need / can't afford the phone contract. It just doesn't seem logical to replace it with a pre-paid iPhone because again, someone don't need the phone part.

That's it.For me i prefer buying iPod touches i have 3 at home.Old ones my 4g was sold for the 5G.

(i always keep the first generations) :D

And something else.If apple puts low cost iPhone without contract it won't be less than 300$ .An this year we don't get so many ipod touch rumors because people is focusing in the iPhone 5

Exactly. Buying an iPhone without a contract, even pre-paid, is / would probably run you about 500 or more dollars.
