I just can't believe the price went up. The different between $1800 base price and $1900 really is a lot for me. Considering I could get a PC for $1500 with 9600m, 2.5 ghz, 4gb and Blu-ray, it makes it really hard to justify the apple price premium. I was very happy about them combining discrete and integrated gfx in the MBP...but wasn't expect the same base price with $100 for students.

Thanks! It looks like you still get that massive 20% discount. What about apple's cinema displays? Do you get a 20% discount on the new display as well if you buy a macbook+cinema display at the same time?

Lastly, can you go to an Apple store and sign up for ADC and get the discount on the spot?

No, you can't do this in the store. Just read the program details at:
http://developer.apple.com/products/student.html
http://developer.apple.com/students/sthardware.html

Here are the Terms & Conditions PDF:

You MUST place your order online AFTER Apple verifies your student status. You actually have to FAX in proof including your student ID and course schedule. Here's the lingo:

How do I verify my student status so my ADC Student Membership can be activated?
After you purchase an ADC Student Membership and receive an Activation Code via email, you must verify your student status before ADC will activate your product. The verification steps are:
1. Visit the ADC Member Site to confirm that you are a student in your ADC Profile. After you click the Student Status checkbox, you must also provide your student ID number and school name.
2. Proceed to the Activations area in the ADC Member Site and use the Code you received via email to start the Activation process.
3. Fax a copy of your passport or other official identification (such as a driver's license or student identification) along with a current or upcoming course schedule or other official proof of enrollment from your college/university

Ok well faxing that information isn't a problem. I wish I'd known about the program sooner though =/

Do you know how long it takes apple to verify the information after they recieve the fax? And can you use the activation code in an apple retail store or do you have to purchase it online?

The discount for LED 24" brings it down to $809.

Does any one know if this ADC membership can still be activated if i already bought a laptop via student discount this year?

Will they still accept me? Is there a way they know i already bought a laptop?

pity about the student discount. I should have graduated last year lol

But in a way it's not surprising. In the past, Apple gave juicy discounts to attract students to the mac.

Now with macs being the most popular computers on campus, they don't have to do that anymore.

we're hooked!

Ok final question about the adc program, and I looked for this one and couldn't find an answer. Can you use apple gift cards at the apple adc store?

if it has not changed today, it was 14% for macbooks and 15% for Macbook Pro's

This still applies, just got back from the Birmingham bull ring store with a shiny new macbook pro :D. I got 15% off (£209.85) and an ipod nano for £14.

I got a huge discount on my MacBook Pro last night from being in Higher Education here in the UK. Saving of £400 the guy on the phone said. Lovely jubbly :)

Exactly the same but I got the ipod nano + printer (£14 for both on rebate).

So it makes the over-all price even less because I wanted the nano and a new printer won't hurt :).

One thing I do love though is how nice they are on the phone, after dealing with BT over the past month it's like night and day.

The staff in the apple store birmingham were nice as pie n all :)

So could I just cancel my MBP order I made yesterday...

then 1. Sign up for the 99$ Student ADC and fax in to verify
2. then order MBP 2.4GHZ for 1719$ CAD??!?!??! so total would be like ~$1800 CAD

Seems logical to me. You ought to a) have a true interest in developing b) buy a lot of stuff at this one-time discount :)

So I just purchased my 2.4 GHz with a student discount and after having one CS rep tell me the discount was only a $100 dollars, I figured that was the best I was going to get on my purchase. Well a different girl rang up my purchase and when I informed her that I was a student and would like to get my discount, she actually gave me $200 off! I was kinda shocked when I looked at my reciept, especially since I was only expecting 100 off.

Pretty much what I am getting at is I don't get how that is possible, but it happened and I got out the door with a $1799 purchase price! Swwweet!

Anyone else have this sorta luck?

BTW it was at the Brea mall store

oh wow, do yuo get the student discount in store? I thought you had to go online for that. Well, I just finished placing my order for the 2.4ghz MacBook online. I got a free printer with it as well. (I'm not sure if I did the best bang for buck with the printer though - I went with a $99.95 option one so I could get it free after rebate)

That's just the thing, online the student discount is only $100 for the MBP, yet in store people have reported a $200 discount.

If this is the way they're going to go, I guess I will have to pay the extra $100 just to get the spanish keyboard layout next year when I order
