WARNING: IF YOU ATTEMPT THIS; DO THIS PRIOR TO INSTALLING LION BUT AFTER YOU HAVE DOWNLOADED LION VIA THE APP STORE. Lion install files are deleted after you install Lion and downloading again can be difficult. So save the files as described in the link below prior to installing Lion.

*Lion $29.99
*4 GB USB drive $4.99 or 8GB for $9.99 (osxdaily recommends 8GB)
*Not having to pay Apple $40 for a 4GB USB drive; PRICELESS :D:D:D

actually, it will be 69$

I was actually calculating the cost difference for what I paid for Lion and the cost of the USB drive plus Lion from Apple. In reality my savings is $35 not $40 but I still feel pretty good about it. :)

I think I found the $40 missing piece included with Apple's USB. See pic below.;););)

Yes, but the Apple Lion drive will be a custom designed, brushed aluminum to match our precious Macs (except for those loser MB owners) with a custom Lion design and mall parts of Steve's DNA embed in the aluminum for future generations to resurrect. Not bad for $69, eh?

Did you manage to do it with a 4GB drive?
The URL you posted says 8GB+

The image on the URL shows 4.21GB free on the 8GB drive, so I guess that it should work with a 4GB drive.

According to the link below a 4GB flash drive has 3.8GB of available space. The Lion file you need is 3.74GB so it'll be close but it should be possible. Although at the same time I would think if you could use a 4GB flash drive the link would have said to use 4GB.

yep, that's what i did, not paying $40 extra for some designer to make a Hello Kitty-usb key. crazy! ;)

I wonder if Apple's thumbdrive will be shaped as a Lion :D

It will probably be on all of the first gen ishuffles. Reuse and recycle.

You could also use a spare DVD

I bought a stack of DVD's recently for about $15. I got 10 Discs and used a spare to make a boot disc, so...
$15/10= 1.50
So I saved $37.50
:D

I've just installed Lion.

Where do I find the files necessary AFTER Lion has been installed???

I hope this method is still possible, as I would like to do a clean install next month...

You need to save it to your desktop prior to install. If you have already installed you need to download it again.

CD/DVDs are becoming useless anymore. USB Flash drives are becoming too cheap. Excellent method to install Lion and much faster than a disc. Much easier to carry as well.

How can I download it again?

Good question, let me look into this for you. Some people have had luck with clicking the alt button and pressing the lion icon on the app store lion app page, the download button for some changes from installed to download. Hope this helps.

I had plans to follow the instructions in that URL to create a USB install drive, but after the download it would only permit install - Lion is now installed, but I cannot find the files referred to in the above URL - I guess the install cleaned up and deleted the downloaded files ?

The App store shows 'installed' and no option to download again.

Yor are correct. The install files are removed from your app folder once they are installed. There are threads on the forum on how to re-download Lion. Good luck.
