Thanks, but that one doesn't help - I can't call Apple and claim that my download failed.

Have you tried rebooting into the recovery partition and downloading it that way. Not sure if that helps or hurts but it is worth a try.

Go to purchased, hold down option and click "OSX Lion", next page should be the Lion page and should show "Purchase". First click will say something like there is a newer version blah blah blah. Keep holding down option and click the link a few time and eventually it will prompt for password, enter and download again. Enjoy!

You're a star - how the hell did you find that?

Thanks mate!
Great advice!!!

Quick question.

I remember during WWDC Apple said you could install it on up to 5 of your own Macs like iTunes so how does this work? When you boot up you other mac and go to th eapp store it allows you to DL?

What about if you just bought or recently bought a mac and got you free DL key. Is it for just the new one or does the 5 Mac allocation still apply?

Have to admit I'm a little confused.

Actually you can install Lion on every mac you own, not limited to 5. All you do is log into your account via the app store and download as you did on your initial computer. The App store will verify that 1) lion is not installed on the computer you are downloading to 2) that you are the user who has already purchased Lion (via your login and pw) and you are good to go. I have installed it on all three of my mac this way with no issue. Think of it like two iPhones using the same iTunes account. Both those phones get access to the same paid apps as long as they use the same iTunes account.

Hope that helps.

You *may* install Lion on all your Macs, you *can* install Lion on any supported Mac, without ever dealing with the Mac App Store again. Just quit, then copy the application you downloaded from the store to a safe place. Afterwards, you copy back to any other Mac and launch to do the upgrade. It's as simple as that.

BTW, I am certainly not advocating piracy. In fact, I really think that any one who cares about the Mac and Mac OS needs to pony up the very small sum of $30 for what is huge *bang* for your *buck*. That said, the fact that Mac OS is DRM-free (no activation, even serials!) is just one more reason I love this OS. It just makes it so much easier to manage legitimate issues. I know. I have dealt with the horrid Windoze activation (for others).

WARNING: IF YOU ATTEMPT THIS; DO THIS PRIOR TO INSTALLING LION BUT AFTER YOU HAVE DOWNLOADED LION VIA THE APP STORE. Lion install files are deleted after you install Lion and downloading again can be difficult. So save the files as described in the link below prior to installing Lion.

*Lion $29.99
*4 GB USB drive $4.99 or 8GB for $9.99 (osxdaily recommends 8GB)
*Not having to pay Apple $40 for a 4GB USB drive; PRICELESS :D:D:D

I have tried this process repeatedly and for some reason can't make my thumb drive bootable. When i do the restore to the thumb drive and select erase destination it gets formatted as "Mac OS Extended" not "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” Any thoughts on what the dealio is?

Partition it first and make sure it is GUID formatted. GUID is needed to make the usb drive bootable.

anyone managed to make a bootable OS X Lion USB Bootdrive off a 4GB Flashdrive?

I did but I don't recommend it. I stripped a USB drive of any files or hidden partitions which allowed me (barely) to squeeze the Lion file completely onto the USB drive. Don't go through that trouble. Give the file a bit of room to breath and put it on the recommend 8GB. I have since reapplied the image to an 8GB USB drive and that is now going to be my backup going forward.

Just to let you know, Apple is going to sell Lion on a USB drive starting in August for $69 U.S.?

Here is a thread discussing it.

https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/12995570/

Thank you for the link. While I appreciate the info the point of this thread is to not have to pay the Apple Tax which in this case is around $40. When you can apply the technique in the first post to a standard 8GB USB drive you will have the exact same backup Apple will be selling but with $40 difference in your favor. $29.99 for Lion plus your cost of the USB, roughly $40 saving over Apple.

$70 for a Apple branded USB backup is way to much. Now keep in mind I am one of the first who paid $70 for my smart cover for my iPad so it depends on how and where you want to spend your money. Smart Cover is not worth $69 but I had to have it, I don't need a Apple branded USB key.

Cheers.

Flash drive vs DVD?

What's the advantage of creating this Lion Install flash drive as opposed to creating the Lion Install DVD?

Or you can burn the dmg file to a DVD, and it costs even less of course. Plus you can keep it in the box with Snow Leopard and it sorta looks like it's meant to have existed. :D

In my opinion a USB is easy to use when installing on the other machines you own. Easy to carry around. Easy to store without possible damage like scratching a DVD. Finally Optical drives are going away very quickly in the Apple lineup i.e. the Mac Mini and the AirBooks sooo a DVD will only get you so far.

Just my 2 cents do what works for you. I prefer the USB but a DVD make work just fine for you.

Don't call me stupid but I want to place Lion on my 8GB USB too.
Can you give me step by step instructions how to do it properly?

No problem. I didn't create a USB thumb drive version of Lion, but I did make a DVD version of Lion after downloading. Of course, the difference is that some people can't download Lion, and now they have an alternative to that with Apple, even though the price is high.
