Not that it'll excuse the price of the TC, but the USB hard drives you guys are pricing are not server grade. They will potentially have a higher rate of failure than the TC hard drive.

Price a server grade hard drive and then make the comparison. But then again, my AEBS + USB drive require 2 electrical outlets, vs TC's 1, not to mention the price saving.

If you don't feel the added value is worth the mark up, you are free to buy the AEBS + USB hard drive, I don't see how apple is "screwing" you, they aren't holding a gun to your head.
 
Would a drive connected via usb run at the same speed as an internal (im assuming sata) one? Wouldnt the usb speeds be the bottle neck there?


And me personally, id deffinatly pay more to have just ONE device.
 
I've just decided to use Safecopy Backup...seems to be the best bargain and functionality of all these options.
