I'm happy that these will work, but I think it is ridiculous that Apple can't get its act together when it comes to printing to ANY printer while 3rd party developers don't seem to have the same problem...

Ok, so does anyone else get the impression that the only reason Apple turned off AirPrint to shared printers is because maybe they got some sort of kickback or managed to charge HP some sort of license to include "AirPrint" on their printers?

I mean, if 2 3rd party developers can manage to add in the capability to do it, within a very short period of time, it makes you wonder why Apply pulled the capability when they obviously had something at least 90% of the way done...

I'm just happy a couple of Devs figured out how to make it work. I don't have the programming skills to make one of these printer apps, so I will gladly pay for one as I think it will be of value to me.

The fact if the matter is, if AirPrint won't work with all printers, so be it. A few enterprising people figured out how to make it work.

Just my two cents.

Licesning Issue ...Really??

There is a rumor that Apple had to pull the feature because of licensing issues.

IF it were a licensing issue,
why wouldn't these software solutions have to adhere to that licensing as well?

Might they get pulled once the lawyers come knocking?

Let's see, free real functionality or paid addons that slow down my computer????

I didn't say that I believe that it was a licensing issue. I just said that I read it somewhere.

Agreed, can't wait till I get home from school to test it out with 4.2GM

Printopia has the best options and worked upon install(works with dropbox too). Fingerprint could not find a single printer. Actually I had the system file solution for Apples method before I installed Printopia. They both work together.

FYI - my printer is connected via ethernet to an Airport Extreme and the Mac connects to it via Bonjour across the network.

Just installed the Printopia demo and it works perfectly. I tried the hack, but my printer (Brother 5370DW) kept pausing the print queue and I couldn't print from either the iPad or my Mac.

$10 to get print from my iPad or iPhone via my G5 iMac? Sounds like a bargain compared to buying a new Mac and/or a new HP printer.
If apple couldn't get it to work at near 100% reliability with near 100% of printers they were right to pull it or delay it. Smaller companies like these 2 can acceptably have less relialability or compatibility but won't get the same negative publicity that apple would if certain printers won't work.
This way apple's well off customers can spend money on a new printer, the rest can use the hack or buy either of these solutions. And supporting smaller developers can only be good for the Mac Eco-system.

If that were true we would have heard about it on some MacRumor site. ;)

You might be being sarcastic, but if not, I did hear that rumour on a mac rumours site...can't remember if it was this one or Daring Fireball.
Seems on odd excuse to pull it if true... it wouldn't be the first time Apple released something and then dealt with the licensing issues later...:)

Printopia Works PERFECT!!! Airprint just works like it should. You can save to PDF or print to your networked printer. No configurations whatsoever. Apple should buy up the software so fast it isn't even funny.

Printopia just makes Airprint everything it should be. Best $8 you'll ever spend if you want to print from a ios device. I have it on my iPhone 4 and iPad.

I never plug a app or program, but this one deserves it.

Does anyone know why this is only available for 10.5 & 10.6? What is the limitation that prevents a printer connected to an older Mac running 10.4 from being able to handle this?

Do you know there's a free version that let real people use the 10.6.5 beta's AirPrint driver? Of course not.

I had a witty comment prepared for you but several other posters have pWned you in the process so i'll let you slide this one time.

BTW: Hacking/beta drivers = not a solution

yeah man, the richest tech company on the planet is holding out on us till it gets its "piece" from HP. thats the ticket.

No worries there. I too read the same rumor.

I simply referenced your statement to add to the discussion
and to speculate that
IF it does turns out to be a licensing issue, "might" that licensing not also affect these products too?

Apple didn't promise us anything except that AirPrint will work with HP's current and new ePrint prints. Even though it was available in the betas doesn't necessarily mean that Apple intended it to be released to the public. The only people that are pissed are the idiots who installed the betas but aren't developers. These are the same people that are pissed for the "delay" of iOS 4.2. Let the beta software that is available only through developer channels be used by the developers for their purposes.

Btw, using beta software isn't a hack. It can be a solution, nothing states that it doesn't work or has bugs.

I challenge anyone and everyone to find me a quote from a reliable source that explicitly states Apple promising that AirPrint would be released to the public with support for shared printers on a local network, that are non-HP ePrint ones.

AirPrint Announcement
“AirPrint is Apple’s powerful new printing architecture that matches the simplicity of iOS—no set up, no configuration, no printer drivers and no software to download,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “iPad, iPhone and iPod touch users can simply tap to print their documents or photos wirelessly to an HP ePrint printer or to a printer shared on a Mac or PC

What do I win?
