Really silly that these companies are charging so much for apps that do so little. Literally all they do is add a field to a Bonjour broadcast.

As a developer I think the price is fair. There's a huge amount of effort that goes into even the simplest application, and then there's the support / updates etc that need to be provided.

It's fair enough if this application is not for you, but it's definitely not 'silly' that small companies make applications like this, or God forbid, make a wage from it.

Nothing personal - Just standing up for the small dedicated mac developers out there :)

printopia was well worth the $10, besides sharing my old HP printer and working flawlessly the ability to print a file right to dropbox is great. i tried the hack version, didn't work for me, but no complaints about printopia nor any of the other ecamm.com products i've purchased. their apps tend to be small, lightweight, cheap, and work.

I installed the 10.6.5 beta hack last week and it works fine with the printer physically connected to my MP. It does not work at all with either of the printers I have hooked into my Airport Express (one via ethernet, the other USB).

So I tested out each of these apps by installing them on my MBP that doesn't have the beta Airprint hack.

Fingerprint detected the two "wireless" printers but did not detect the one wired to my MP. Odd since they are all essentially wireless from my MBP. (Yes, the MBP was awake).

Next I tried Printopia. It detected every printer on my network + PDF + Dropbox + print to Mac. I think that is more than even Apple promised.

Right now I'm not buying either of them b/c as long as I can print to one printer (which I can w/ the hack) I'm fine. But I will get my parents to buy Printopia b/c their printer is wireless and everytime I'm over my mom asks when she can print from her iPad.

Nice feature on a helpful app
I can also recommend
PrintCentral and Print n Share from EuroSmartz (both avail on App Store)
Excellent functionality and integration with iPad, especially PrintCentral which is a dedicated iPad app.
Perhaps macrumors should add these into the mix when reviewing airprint capable apps.

AirPrint problems

What's peculiar is that there seems to be no technical reason why Apple has disabled this feature. If other vendors can make it work (really well, it seems), I don't see why Apple couldn't.

There's a broad definition of the word "work" and there's a very focused definition of the word 'work'.

In my airprint testing, I tried to print a photo to my inkjet. Fail - there was no way to select the paper source, so it printed the photo on plain paper. I switched the auto-feed to 4x6, and it didn't shrink-to-fit correctly - it printed the image at 100%, so it was somewhat across the 4x6.

Until they figure out a way to pass driver info back and forth easily, AirPrint will be buried. Not sure how this is handled on actual supported printers, but the hack works...with caveats. And those caveats are hard to explain to users, which is why generic AirPrint is no more for now.

Got a question on Printopia. I've updated my iPhone and installed Printopia on my iMac(it wirelessly synced with every printer in the house even a label printer), but I can't seem to find a print button on any of my apps. How do I send a print job to the mac or printer from my iPod so that it can be printed? I know I'm over looking something simple, so take it easy on me...TIA

Some apps will have it others won't. Look for the either the "print" icon in the corner or the little share icon (square with an arrow in it). When you tap that it will bring up the print dialog. If you have evernote or heck use safari you will see what I am talking about.

Thank you Rhett. I was expecting it to be in the top right hand corner and when it wasn't I simply didn't poke around enough!! Thanks again

Printopia from Ecamm Network installs as a preference pane in System Preferences and allows users to easily select which local and networked printers should be shared to iOS 4.2 devices on the local network. Users can also send print jobs from iOS 4.2 devices directly to their Macs (including Dropbox folders for automatic syncing), allowing for easy export of PDF/JPEG files without the need for actual printing. Printopia is priced at $9.95 with a 7-day free trial available.

This is very worth the price. The applications and features are quite impressive.

Wow, I don't know what happened but when I tried to print color pictures with Printopia installed all the colors were washed out. This affected both the pictures from the iPhone and the pictures on the Mac. Once I removed the program, all the printers/pictures went back to normal with normal colorations all around.

Has anybody else experienced this? I was immensely pleased with the ease the product installed and all the network printers it saw, but I can't deal with the loss of color and clarity

Printopia FTW

Just tried it and then immediately bought it. The beauty of it is that there's no futzing around with settings required. It just works as advertised and uses your Mac's printer settings. Plus there's the added bonus of the Send to Mac feature, which I know is going to come in handy.

I have no regrets about buying this at all. So worth it.

Used the demo of Printopia for a while and just purchased it. Easy $9.99 spent. Works.

Printopia bug..

Printopia is nice except that when I send something to my HP 1320 laserjet, the manual feed light comes on and I have to press the green continue button to tell it to proceed.

Not sure why...

When Printopia is installed on a Mac. Do you have to have the Mac running in order to print from an iOS device?
