I wonder how the will avoid burn-in. Or maybe burn-in doesn’t matter too much if that space is only ever being used for those binary indicators.

More like step backwards, because "the pill" is more down than the classic notch and thus it grabs more of the usable vertical display space than the notch we have now. So it's more like a downgrade. It's more visible and grabs more of the display.

It’s different because, as this article states, the indicators will be brighter than the rest of the display, which is currently not the case. In addition, the background will be black, which currently is also usually not the case.

I think it might be just on the Lock Screen. I could be wrong though, I'm not on the beta. But yeah, notifications at the bottom would be really weird.

I preferred the "i" design but I will reserve judgement for release day. As longs the bezels are shrinking a bit more as other rumors has stated, this is better than the notch.

It would have been cool to just throw in a multi-color LED instead of green/orange for notifications.

I hope that they expand this particular function into optical notification rings.

Thats one of the things I missed about Android, you could customize the notification lights on the front and back camera. It's nice seeing what's going on before you even pick up your phone.

Since they serve security/privacy functions, nothing below the platform should be able to configure their behavior.

Exactly what I was thinking after reading this. It just doesn't make sense to have those pixels there as part of the screen, but never use them except for this "special" usage, while also somehow making the pixels "different" somehow (if they're part of the display).

A single pill-shaped cutout with individual LEDs for these indicators makes far more sense.

That would be preferable because using the display could make the notification “lights” prone to software glitches.
