In his Power On newsletter today, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman briefly touched on the future of the Pro Display XDR and a larger iMac.

This comes amid rumors of a new Studio Display with mini-LED backlighting launching by 2026.

Below, we recap the latest rumors.

Pro Display XDR 2

Released in December 2019, the Pro Display XDR features a 32-inch screen with LED backlighting, 6K resolution, a 60Hz refresh rate, P3 wide color, up to 1,600 nits of brightness, a Thunderbolt 3 port, and three USB-C ports. In the U.S., the Pro Display XDR starts at $4,999, while the optional Pro Stand costs $999 extra.

Gurman today said a new Pro Display XDR is currently "less of a priority for Apple" as an expensive, niche product.

In 2022, he said that Apple was working on an updated version of the Pro Display XDR with an Apple silicon chip, but it is unclear if that remains the company's plan as of today. In Apple's Studio Display, an A13 Bionic chip powers features such as Center Stage camera framing for video calls, spatial audio, and Siri voice commands.

While no other features have been rumored for the next Pro Display XDR, customers are hopeful for a camera, speakers, and a higher refresh rate.

Larger iMac

It has been nearly three years since Apple discontinued the 27-inch iMac, as part of its move away from Intel processors. Since then, the 24-inch iMac has been Apple's only all-in-one desktop computer, with no larger model available.

Will a larger iMac ever make a comeback? Gurman today merely said that Apple will "probably eventually get around" to it.

It might not be another 27-inch iMac, specifically, though.

In November 2023, Apple announced that it had no plans to release a new version of the 27-inch iMac with an Apple silicon chip at that time. Instead, Apple recommended pairing its standalone Studio Display with a Mac Studio or Mac mini.

But an even larger iMac could materialize one day.

In late 2023, both Gurman and Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple was developing a 32-inch iMac for release in late 2024 or in 2025. Kuo said the larger iMac's screen would feature mini-LED backlighting, which would allow for increased brightness, higher contrast ratio, and other benefits compared to LCD technology.

The late 2024 window has now passed, but a 2025 launch is still on the table, perhaps. Gurman's latest update on the larger iMac is vague, though.

Is there much demand for this ?
On the thread about the Studio Display, lots of people are asking for a screen larger than 27”. The XDR’s main problem is the price. Apple targeted it at the very niche “reference monitor” market where displays are often more than $10K. If they were to adjust their target and price to a more general Mac owner market, they would get a lot more volume.

The larger iMac rumors need to die.
How much more explicitly could Apple have put it other than to literally say that the larger iMac is dead?
Sure, we can fluff around with the fact that Apple said “27 inches”, but no, let’s not. Apple almost never comments on future plans at all, the fact that they said anything should be an indication.
There is no bigger iMac coming.
It just simply doesn’t make sense, it doesn’t make sense environmentally and now that the Mac studio exists it doesn’t really make sense for their “Pro” customers.

The 24 inch iMac makes sense because the smaller iMac has always been popular in homes and offices, and the M chips are just absurdly powerful. Those computers will last a very long time and for homes and offices that’s really all you could ask.
But anyone who thinks they could put a 32 inch 6K Mini LED 120Hz display in an iMac with the M4Max for that old starting price of $1799… that’s never gonna happen.
The machine you want would be $5000+, you’re better off with a dedicated display and a Mac Studio for the same price.

As someone who might be in the market for a larger iMac in the next 5 or 6 years - family computer for when the baby gets a little older. I'm interested in what the rumors are currently saying. Yes, there's not much to say in this article, but at least I know there doesn’t seem to be something in development. A Mac mini probably makes more sense for me anyway.

SOOoooo A iMac Pro OR Just bigger display iMac. Current M4 iMac is Ok for what I need. JUST HATE THE COLORS... Washed out pastels just don't cut it. Yeah Bare aluminum is ok the Purple looks good but the washed out purple front is Alabama Short Bus level special. 🤢 But black is better. Heck if the display facing side was all flat black I would be ok with it. I guess Im just looking at having a Black mask made for one when I get one.

Typing this on a 21" 4K Retina i5 from YES 2017.....

So I read the article hoping to gain some new information but I couldn't find anything but hot useless air from Gurman.
BTW did Mark already confirm the Apple announcement for the 19th? I'm so sure he already "knew" it and is being praised despite his constant wrong speculative guesses which he presents as facts.

To judge by the activity and vehemence of commenters here, it's a multi-trillion dollar market. :)

In the real world? I think Apple has rightly figured out that most people who want a huge display are probably going to be buying the display separately from the CPU (a Mini/Studio/Pro). I don't doubt that quite a few people would buy a large-screen iMac (myself included), but the Mac is a small slice of Apple's pie, and desktop Macs are a small slice of that small slice.

Exactly. I was hoping for some XDR.2 news, but now I know it's "less of a priority". Thanks yea.

Given Apple’s pricing strategy with its displays, it’s hard to see a larger iMac costing anything less than $3K, or likely more. The fact that Gurman says they may get around to it makes it seem like a 2026 or 2027 thing at the earliest.

Joe nearly always posts articles about “DEALS” and presumably they needed something to fill in for today. You can create scripts that block his posts on Macrumors and use something like stopthemadness to never see them.

Clearly nothing is lost given the second half of this post doesn’t even have any damned information about what he’s claiming other than Gurman saying they’ll “Probably get around to it” how is that even newsworthy.

En(shittification of the internet and journalism as a whole continues.

A larger iMac feels inevitable in due time. But absolutely not 27". That is way too close in size to the 24" iMac. I'm assuming it will be 30" or 32".

Also I'd really like to see a 32" ASD.

The update that I would like to see: 30 inch iMac with the same microprocessor and memory options as a MacBook Pro.

I am still using my 27 inch iMac. Several associates are also using five to ten year old 27 inch iMacs. Why? The large screen iMac is the perfect executive computer. It has a nice sleek, clean appearance and fits nicely on a desk. There isn't a bunch of cables messing up the desk or inviting someone to trip on. Part of the magic of Apple is esthetics. The Mac mini is not about esthetics - it is all about a box you can toss somewhere. I left Dell because I liked the power and esthetics of Apple’s large screen all in one iMac.

The Mac Studio or Mac mini with a Studio display is overpriced and is the wrong form factor for me. By eliminating the large screen iMac Apple has killed my reason for buying a second computer.

If I am going to be stuck with a box and cables, I will just use my existing Macbook Pro 16 and have the same mess of cables as a Mac Mini or Mac studio.

For some a basic 24 inch iMac is fine. Unfortunately, Apple Silicon hasn’t been good to me. The larger screen iMac may not be a hot seller but I know several individuals who have yet to switch to Apple silicon because they like their large screen iMacs.
