IMO what made the 27" 5K iMac great was the base model. Anything other than that wasn't near as good as value and while it looked nice the options we have now are a much better value than the higher iMacs/iMac Pro (which I actually had).

I'd kinda like to see Apple go a different direction. Release a new line of displays (say 24/27/32) that can function as normal displays but also have a new type of connector to it for a new type of modular Mac. Something like a Mac Nano. Even smaller than the mini but it would seamlessly connect to the displays (if wanted) and get its power/video directly from the Display. No extra power or display cables (again if wanted). That way you could have a the benefits of the aesthetics of the All-In-One but more upgradability later. They could even bundle the Nano (or the displays) with keyboard/mouse/trackpad etc or even sell it as a complete set. Anyway, that is my thought.

Apple may surprise but I just don’t think it’s gonna happen, I think that the 27” 5K display and the 32” 6k display combined with mac mini or Mac Studio is the way they will go for anything outside of the one-size iMac. People can keep the display but upgrade the machine a couple of times. I think the iMac size is the happy medium for all of the all in one purposes, from computer labs to home offices and everything in between. They may surprise but I just don’t see it.

And that’s coming from a guy who would LOVE to see a 6k 32” iMac Pro. I’d be all about it.

My biggest beef is the price of their displays needs to come down a bit.

Nobody’s said it, so I will.

Apple won’t make a 27”, 30”, or bigger iMac because they can’t maintain their 45-50% gross margins on what would clearly be a consumer product at price a consumer would pay. It would be too costly and thus result in sales levels below Apple’s targets.

The Mac buying market on this forum and others likely wants M4 mini capabilities with a 30-32” 5K-6K resolution.
Do the math. That’s a $2500 to $3000 or higher iMac. It will not sell very well.

And if you want to go Pro with more storage and RAM, it’s $4000 and up.

The Pro Display XDR isn't targeted towards the average Apple customer. Thus the price will stay where it is, for those who really need it. As expected.

“Customers are hopeful for a camera, speakers, and a higher refresh rate.”

Wow, such a niche product and MacRumors is so confident of what their customers want. Although I don’t know either, I bet Pro Display XDR customers don’t care about camera and speakers almost at all, and there are some priorities over a higher refresh rate.

I run a 27" iMac from 2017 (think the model is dated to 2015) and I have been waiting to upgrade to ideally a 32" iMac or iMac Pro. I don't want to downgrade on screen size and I like the all in one form factor.

Is unlikely that Apple will bring in the AIO back like had in the past. Displays last longer then a computer, I now have a Dell 2724D monitor that replaced the 3008WFP because that finally gave up the ghost.
That 3008 bought shortly after launch so lasted several computers and just how many years.
Eagerly awaiting the Asus 6k 32” to hit retail.
Screen also used with a Windows Pc so no Apple Monitor.
For those that want it then a decent monitor paired with either min or studio or even MacBook Air/pro is where Apple will move people.
For years people complained about the “throwing away a perfectly good monitor” and this is the result of it.

Zero compelling products in this post. Monitor competition has caught up. Now there are great OLED as well as 5k LED monitors for a fraction of the XDR price.

Doubtful there will be a 32-inch iMac. That’s a lot of display to ship. And a lot of display to throw away when upgrading a desktop. Mac mini and Mac Studio make much more sense. Defeats the purpose of an “all in one” when the desktop box already is quite small, easy to ship and stack, and much more cost effective to replace.

Yeah, this isn’t happening.

In his Power On newsletter today, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman briefly touched on the future of the Pro Display XDR and a larger iMac.

This comes amid rumors of a new Studio Display with mini-LED backlighting launching by 2026.

Below, we recap the latest rumors.

Pro Display XDR 2

Released in December 2019, the Pro Display XDR features a 32-inch screen with LED backlighting, 6K resolution, a 60Hz refresh rate, P3 wide color, up to 1,600 nits of brightness, a Thunderbolt 3 port, and three USB-C ports. In the U.S., the Pro Display XDR starts at $4,999, while the optional Pro Stand costs $999 extra.

Gurman today said a new Pro Display XDR is currently "less of a priority for Apple" as an expensive, niche product.

In 2022, he said that Apple was working on an updated version of the Pro Display XDR with an Apple silicon chip, but it is unclear if that remains the company's plan as of today. In Apple's Studio Display, an A13 Bionic chip powers features such as Center Stage camera framing for video calls, spatial audio, and Siri voice commands.

While no other features have been rumored for the next Pro Display XDR, customers are hopeful for a camera, speakers, and a higher refresh rate.

Larger iMac

iMac-Pro-2022-27-and-24-iMac.jpg

It has been nearly three years since Apple discontinued the 27-inch iMac, as part of its move away from Intel processors. Since then, the 24-inch iMac has been Apple's only all-in-one desktop computer, with no larger model available.

Will a larger iMac ever make a comeback? Gurman today merely said that Apple will "probably eventually get around" to it.

It might not be another 27-inch iMac, specifically, though.

In November 2023, Apple announced that it had no plans to release a new version of the 27-inch iMac with an Apple silicon chip at that time. Instead, Apple recommended pairing its standalone Studio Display with a Mac Studio or Mac mini.

But an even larger iMac could materialize one day.

In late 2023, both Gurman and Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple was developing a 32-inch iMac for release in late 2024 or in 2025. Kuo said the larger iMac's screen would feature mini-LED backlighting, which would allow for increased brightness, higher contrast ratio, and other benefits compared to LCD technology.

The late 2024 window has now passed, but a 2025 launch is still on the table, perhaps. Gurman's latest update on the larger iMac is vague, though.

They have literally become the laziest IT company I know in the name of profits. We are going to start spending less than an 8th of what we used to spend with Apple just because the negligible improvements are so unimpressive it’s making us consider competitors. Really disappointed in what Apple has sunk to.

As an XDR owner - I can say I don't care a jot about a camera and speakers. Tandem OLED + 120hz are the big areas that would make me consider upgrading, I think both are likely on a PD XDR2. A bump to 7k/8k would be a nice bonus also.

I’m the club of iMac Pro 27” users who would love to update to an Apple Silicon all-in-one form factor (I.e. new iMac), but I won’t go down to 24” nor will I go for those horrible pastel colours. I’d be happy with 27”, 30” or 32” in a black case. My iMac Pro is now seven years old and I know I’m missing out by staying with an intel chip, but I’ll continue waiting until I’m offered something that appeals to me.

These are fair points - but Apple makes and sells an AIO today, with its current generation chips, in 7 colors(!) - so it’s not like Apple has abanondoned the AIO format.
