At your home, in the room you plan on being when you pre-order, on the device you are using (I'm assuming an iPhone with the Apple Store app), do an internet speed test twice. Once with your Wi-Fi, once with your Wi-Fi off using phone data. See whichever is fastest, and use that one when it's time to pre-order.

Sounds like you need to get a better wireless router...

You want what has the lowest latency too, not the download or upload speed. Home internet is 99.9% of the time going to be more reliable.

Make a small sacrifice to the Apple gods - perhaps cut the core out of a freshly picked apple

I'm joking.

Except for the sacrifice bit.

The sacrifice is actually smashing an older device. 5s or 2nd gen mini or higher for guaranteed launch day delivery.

If my wifi starts acting up (which is rare) I'll just use mobile data. Fortunately I have excellent cell coverage in my area.

No need to reset a functioning modem or router that hardly goes out. My internet is rock solid unless there is an outage, in which case a modem or router reset will not help anything.

Have a backup plan! Use your phone as a wireless hotspot if your carrier allows it.

Reset my router? WTF?

Maybe I should shut it down until 12:00 to be sure it doesn't overheat. Cuz ya neva know! :D

But thanks for the Pro Tip Ace :D

Then you have to wait a minute or two for it to reconnect and by then pre-orders may have already started leaving you behind a little.

My recommendation: If you are worried, just make sure your network is "quiet", no heavy downloads, or video streaming that can eat up bandwidth and potentially increase latency.
