There’s been no indication Apple is including this in the phones this year, and we would have known by now

I just watched Marques brownlee‘s new video on you tube, and the dummy unit he has of the iPhone 12 pro max, has an unknown mysterious button on the lower half of the unit. Could this be a Touch ID sensor? very interesting....

Current thoughts are it’s for the 5G antenna

I doubt touch ID is ever coming back to Apple products that have already moved on to Face ID. Eventually none of them will have Touch ID and they'll all have Face ID.

Yeah, assuming they did that. I don't see why they would, but I'm sure someone here has a clear reason as to why.

You are aware of COVID right? No fingerprint sensor under the screen means pulling of your mask or use your passcode with the current iPhone's. While Android phones have fingerprint scanner under the screen for a while now.

Covid isn’t a permanent thing and the majority of the time you won’t be wearing any sort of face mask.

Who says Covid is not permanent? And FaceID sucks also in other scenarios. Apple needs to stop being cheap and implement a fingerprint sensor under the display like Android devices have. The iPhone is supposed to be a flagship phone right? So they should also put flagship features on it.

FaceID already supersedes Touch ID. High end phones should have 3D Face ID. Touch ID is the old technology.

Fingerprint under the screen hasn’t been reliable on Android devices. Apple won’t release an unreliable technology and lock themselves into that right now. That’s an ideal solution for a new TouchID, but the tech is just not ready yet.

TouchID as it exists is not nearly as secure as FaceID. Since Apple’s current big kick is privacy and security, they aren’t going to go back to only using fingerprints. Touch ID: 1 in 50,000 vs Face ID: 1 in 1,000,000 - chances someone can beat the security.

That’s why I believe that, if TouchID makes a return to iPhones, it won’t be the only security feature available. Face ID isn’t going anywhere soon.

Theres a really bizarre thing going on right now where some people want technology to stop progressing or even go backwards. Going back to Touch ID, 3.5mm headphones jacks and microSD cards are 3 of the things I’ve seen a lot of.

There is no way Touch ID can be considered old technology, when apples newest iPhone was released with it (iPhone SE). It needs to be updated to under screen screen though and rumours suggest the next iPad Air will have it, and you can bet that when Apple implements it, it will work perfectly unlike some of the current android flagships which can be finicky to use (although they allow for all screen £200 android phones to exist).I can understand your statement about the 3.5mm jack, but it does provide the best audio experience and professional/audiophile equipment will always use them. Micro SD cards also provide a lot of storage space for such a small size, but will never be implemented in iPhones/iPads, so you don’t have to worry about that one.

“Perfectly” is maybe an exaggeration of Apple’s solutions 😂 But this type of quality expectation is one big reason 2020 is not the year for under the screen Touch ID on iPhones.

The SE is using a lot of iPhone 8 parts. Not exactly “old” but consider that the iPhone X launched FaceID the same year as the 8. The SE and the 8 are the last iPhones to likely use Touch ID. Touch ID has been around since the iPhone 5S. It’s aged well, but it’s old. In a couple years Face ID will be “old” tech. 😂

I agree. Touch ID is not old technology. Apple just made the decision to do one or the other. Ideally both will be included in a phone in the future, probably when Touch ID under the screen is more reliable and cheaper to produce. I also think at some point in the future we'll have a Face ID phone with no notch. Maybe both together - Face ID and underscreen Touch ID with no notch. We might be talking years down the line though.

Having both options on your phone has advantages over one or the other. Facemask? Use Touch ID. Gloves? use Face ID. Both? you're screwed then.

Apples reason for excluding micro SD cards has nothing to do with old technology. It has everything to do with keeping the profit margins high from the storage upgrades at purchase.

why not? Touch ID first came in 2013. It was replaced in 2017 with faceid.

Never understood the hate for Face ID. I find myself missing it on my Mac when I use it in comparison to my 11 Pro and 11" iPad Pro.

I like touching my iPhone while it's laying flat on a table to unlock it. I also like unlocking it while I'm pulling it out of my pocket rather than waiting until its pointed at my face.

I'd be more open to Face ID if they just put a straight bezel across the top of the screen instead of the notch. Call me stubborn but I still think the notch is a dumb design compromise and I am probably going to wait for them to get rid of it before I buy a Face ID iPhone. Hopefully by that time they'll include both touch and Face ID so I can still unlock my phone without pointing it at my face.

this argument has never made sense. Why would you want less screen space?

2021 per the most recent rumour I've seen (so '12S Pro' models most likely) sounds like a good S year feature (like with the 5S) - think it will be popular, quite a lot of people on the boards mention they don't really like Face ID - either the concept of it, or the specific limitations.

Sure, but we all know it's just a compromise to hold us over until Apple releases a notch-free iPhone. That goofy notch is not going to last forever.

of course not but going back to a full size bezel is not the answer either and would be a regression. Either the parts will be miniaturised further to fit into an ever smaller bezel or it’ll be possible to put them behind the screen.

Not happening this year. I feel like it's a large enough change that we would've heard or seen by now. I think 2021/22 will be when we see it, if we do.

I've had to enter my passcode more times in the past few months than in YEARS prior because of FaceID being useless while wearing a facemask.

Apple would probably end up selling more phones if they brought back TouchID, especially this year. Even though the pandemic is temporary, people will always be concerned it might come back and will want to have both technologies available.

Of course FaceID will fail with a mask, and my helmet too. Touch ID failed because of my gloves. FaceID has been flawless otherwise. Don't mind putting my code manually once in a while.

Ill bet Apple has the capability now to make the notch half as tall or even less and could incorporate it into a narrow bezel that would look better. They’re waiting so they can squeeze as much out of the current manufacturing process as possible, as well as the 6,7,8 style that they will surely drop after the new SE has run it’s course. When the notchless iPhones come out the last notch iPhone will become the next SE

Zero. It might come back one day when the under the screen capability improves. However of the things I like best about TouchID is being able to physically feel the button while picking it up (or pulling it out of pocket) and being able to unlock the phone before I can even see it (or it needs to see my face). It is why even though the unlock process is slower than FaceID, the actual procedure for unlocking it is WAY faster than FaceID for me. I don't think an under the screen option is going to do that and won't really be any better than FaceID - other than possibly providing a two factor authentication method (under the screen TouchID along with FaceID).
