Hey, let's not beat the hell out of OP. He/She obviously has a real issue and I guess we all have our "things".

You're either trolling us, or extremely computer illiterate to the extent you can't even Google. But I'm not sure, because you seem serious... So at risk of humiliating myself, I'll respond to help you out.

1. contrary to apparently popular thought, iOS is NOT Windows.
2. Windows may be the only OS that keeps it's core OS files in the same partition as the rest of the OS, most others partition out.

You can partition a disk and install windows on a system partition yourself if you want to. :)

In some other post, OP claimed that he/she is a programmer and know how things done in computer.

Well .. for a so called programmer, OP is kinda .. pardon me ... silly, and "noobical"??

I agree it's misleading, but it is what it is, and that is marketing. If a company isn't misleading the customer in any way, shape, or form, they aren't doing a good job! Or at least that seems to be the mantra of most companies these days.

I would be strongly interested, if these forums had a picture + age next to it in the signature area, just to see what these individuals looked like to match their posts. ;). Just a thought

16GB = 15.62GiB

iPhone software: 13.6 GiB

I'm getting 20% less than what I paid for.. why?

I KNOW THAT 1GB = 1000MB, 1GiB = 1024MB. iPhone software lists GiB, advertisements say GB. However, when GB is converted to GiB it doesn't add up

You think 2.4GB is .024% of 16GB?

No, but the difference between 1000MB and 1024MB is .024%, which was part of his question. If you are talking about 2.4GB of 16GB, then it is about 15%, still not the exaggerated 20%.

To the OP:
I'm 12 and what is this?

Longer version:
I'm guessing you're a tween and OCD and very observant.. if 2+2 does add up to 4 then you're likely to ask enough questions till you account for it. Nothing wrong with that but either you're the above or simply on here to troll about why the reported capacity is less then you'd hoped. Knowing the little that I do about iOS I do know that several partitions exist beyond the OS that are naturally hidden (jailbreaking seems to reveal these) and thats just the way it is.

If you don't like how Apple uses/treats the space on your device then I'm sure an Apple genius can roll their eyes at you while they process the refund.

I think this guy/gal is just trying to get a reaction out of us he has another thread that has had a title changed in the last 3 mins at least 3 times just to suite his needs.

This. Don't feed the trolls y'all. Then it makes them think it's ok to beg, and that they'll get food everytime. They need to stay in the other room while the humans are eating.

Umm...

The binary-decimal counting difference that a lot of people brought up does not apply in this situation.

As any EE can tell you, individual memory chips, whether RAM, ROM or Flash, are ALWAYS referenced by binary size because that's how they're built.

A 16GB flash memory chip, such as is used in the iPhone, has up to 65,536 x 256K blocks = 2^34 = decimal 17,179,869,184 bytes.

One possibility is that Apple decided to count after formatting for an HFS file system, which can take up to 10%.

Personally, I've always thought that Apple was trying to nicely disguise the worst case for initial bad flash memory blocks, which could drop capacity by 1/2 GB on a 16GB chip... so that customers wouldn't get upset by discovering that their device came with less good memory than someone else's.

I'm sorry but who uses GiB??? This is news to me. It's GB. Oh, this is a WELL KNOWN FACT, nothing new in the computer world. Stop making things more complicated than they need to be.

.38 of 1GB is not 20% of 16GB ... you should have bought a 32GB to compensate for your shortcomings

You just took his post, cut a very significant part out for what reason?

He obviously said 16 gb = (IS) 15.62 gib. But his phone only has 13 gb or so which is 20% less then what he paid for.

Because he's a troll. I didn't realize it till I looked at his stats and saw the threads he's started.

Page 3 has a screenshot from Cydia that clearly explains why but he's intentionally trying to keep the discussion going.
