Hopefully, this will settle the debate.

ROTFL. Settle a debate on MacRumors? Seriously?

No amount of photo (over)analysis will "prove" that Apple did or did not photoshop out the Home button. Make all the logical arguments you like that Apple would not do so, but there's no way to prove it given the evidence currently available since some of it is contradictory (c.f. leaked photo of front glass showing something where a home button would go)

Personally I'd be surprised if there was no home button in some form, as it would change the UI from the other devices in the iOS family. With Apple though, who knows. I'm disinclined to rule anything out, so I have no particular opinion as to whether it will or won't.

We'll know for sure in a week.

You know Apple did this on purpose, right? They knew people will analyze the picture. They are probably laughing right now. When was the last time Apple leaked a picture of a product that hasn't been revealed to the world in an invitation?:confused:

I made a picture to prove the iPad in the press invite is not an iPad 2 (or iPad 1)

Hopefully, this will settle the debate. The home button is not photoshopped out because Apple would never condone false advertising. But good for you for thinking out of the box.

You have not proven anything. You people are ridiculous. You focus on water droplets so much, why don't you focus on the fact that the calendar icon practically covers the small droplets at the top left corner and all the other "proof" pictures don't.

BAM!!!!! proof that there is a home button. (I am not saying there is or isn't, I am just saying you have no proof either way.)

i'd like to point out the fact that all the 'comparison' photo's are shot at a different angle than the one in the invite.

I tried to capture this shot with my iphone 4 and ipad1, but i think Apple used a wider-angled lens than my iphone 4 has. (evidenced by the slight pincushion effect in the invite)

Anyway. I cropped the best shot i could make so that the bottom left corner cut the maps icon in a similar fashion and sure enough. the home button is almost out of the frame.

Conclusion: Since my photo didn't line up exactly the same I can't be sure, but there is a very high chance that making the photo at the correct angle, with the correct crop will leave the home button out of the frame.

oh by the way. the reason that the water droplets on the left of the calendar icon don't match completely can be explained simply by the fact that the ipad1/2 has less pixels and can therefore not show the same amount of detail.

A better comparison is the cluster of 5 (6 if you cant the crooked one) drops to the top-right of the calendar icon.

Edit: On closer inspection, the home button is in the frame, but it is so dark it can almost not be seen (can you find it in my shot?). See my photo here:

You turned it upside down. I can see the front-facing camera

Look closer; that seems to be a speck of dust on the edge of the home button depression. The slight color change shows the partial circle. The "square" in the middle of the home button is just off frame. It does look a bit like the camera, but that doesn't explain the outline.

You are correct, it's something on the edge of the button. Raising contrast will show the home button more clearly.

@heyyitzmelissa: it's an iPad1. It doesn't have a camera.

What I'm curious to know is...

If the slightly larger/thicker body of iPad 3 is to accommodate a larger battery to support the Retina Display and supposed LTE technology, does that mean the WiFi only version, presumably carrying the same size battery, will get much longer battery life?

Is this the current case between the WiFi and the 3G iPad 2's?

The iPad 3 will have two home buttons; one for right and one for left handed individuals.

Good effing Christ, this has become sad. Just wait six days and see.

I like to use my brain and logic, though. My superior intellect doesn't let me rest when I recognize inconsistency. And I don't like to wait around to be spoonfed my information.

A more interesting question (has anyone asked this yet?) is:

Why did Apple take a picture that was so misleading if there is indeed a home button on the iPad 3?

From what I am reading here and elsewhere, this isn't an easy shot to make, and it is sort of counterintuitive. Why flip it upside down? Why put it in landscape? None of these contortions make much sense to me.

If it does turn out to have a home button, I think I will be:
a) disappointed that they probably photoshopped this in a really pathetic way--at least do it with some skill!
b) disappointed in me for expending thought processes on the issue!

I guess this debate just doesn't do anything for me. Does it really matter if it has a home button or doesn't? If it has a home button I'm buying it, If it doesn't have a home button I'm still buying it. I guess people just looking for something to come back and say haha I told you so?

I think it might have a home button, as those droplets don't perfectly "point" to the icon with 5 icons in the dock. If you had 6, it might, but that means that the icon to the left wouldn't be directly over the home button, and it might just be out of the picture.

I still don't get why people come into threads to try to convince others that the thread shouldn't exist. If the thread is within forum rules but holds no interest to you, don't read it? It's an open forum where one of the main points is to speculate about rumors. Such horror that some people want to talk about things others don't.

Anyway back to topic...

I'm withdrawing my post, the picture below is absolutely disgusting.

so given that the iPad3 (new iPad) has a home button what exactly did Gizmodo steel from you? the wrong thuoght process?:D:D:D:D

It wasn't wrong thought processes. We were both using good logic but Apple did photoshop out the home button after all.

The OP was wrong. The thought process was wrong.
Home button or no home button.
