This might sound like a stupid question but why isn't the iPhone on this list of affected goods? Isn't the iPhone manufactured in China like the rest of these products?

Thanks!

From earlier MacRumors article (https://www.macrumors.com/2018/07/20/apple-watch-omitted-us-tariffs-china/ ) "As for Apple, The New York Times recently reported that during a meeting in May, President Trump told CEO Tim Cook the U.S. government would not levy tariffs on iPhones assembled in China. No mention was made of other product categories, however"

The tariffs are very targeted and companies can lobby to have their products classified in a way that they don't apply.

I support the POTUS on this issue. And will pay the delta cost without whining.

You're actually supposed to whine and NOT pay the delta. That's how tariffs change policy. Don't let blind allegiance prevent you from actually supporting your POTUS's agenda.

A proposed $200 billion tariff on Chinese goods would affect the Apple Watch, AirPods, HomePod, Beats headphones, AirPort routers, Apple Pencil, Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard, MacBooks, Mac mini, and a selection of cables, chargers, and adapters, Apple said today in a letter sent to the U.S. government.
What Mac mini?

Because products like iPhone, iPad, and MacBook literally cannot be manufactured in the U.S. That's why they're not on the list. Tim Cook was able to get an exemption on those products.

For example, the U.S. does not have CNC equipment, let alone the tradespeople and process engineers to manufacture the aluminum enclosures. It's estimated Apple has purchased or leased over 20,000 CNC machines overseas.

In theory, the U.S. could make the low-tech products like Watch, HomePod, and cables domestically. But there's no chance the workforce could make an iPad.

EVERY company will increase the price of their products relative to the tariff.

The only losers are the American people.

The idea of a tariff is to increase the price of foreign imported items so that American companies can compete. It works for very similarly priced products, but because manufacturing is so much cheaper in China, the prices are just too far out of whack.

For example, if I want to buy an American-made plastic chair, I'll pay $30. The same Chinese-made plastic chair is $5. After the tariff, the Chinese-made plastic chair will be $7. This won't influence any people to buy the American-made version, it will just take $2 out of everyone's pockets.

What about the Chinese people? They pay heavy tariffs to import our goods. Tariffs suck for everyone, it’s the same problem, but makes for uncomfortable mental gymnastics for certain partisan political affiliations, so this is conveniently ignored.

"MacMini" (as Apple is now apparently calling it):

4th generation mobile Intel chip at 1.4 ghz (current is 8th generation)

Soldered on 4 GB RAM (not upgradeable)

500 GB spinning HDD

Who is buying this?

I mean it's only $499, but those specs in a laptop would make it overpriced at $499.
It should now be Athlon 200GE with A320 chipset, but cheaper.

I imported a Chinese piece of equipment on 3 July 2018. It did not clear customs till 20 Sep 2018. Trump tariffs were instituted 1 Sep 2018. Customs takes about a week to clear if it is slow. They charged me $1928 on purpose. I was Trumped.
