I use my 15" MBP as my primary machine. The only limitation I have found is when playing high graphic intensity video games, otherwise my MBP works great as a desktop replacement. Don't worry about overheating. If it is sitting on a desk you will not notice the overheat issue.

By the way, congratulations on getting your first mac.

Thanks! As for me, I don't do any gaming so that should solidify this purchase.

The main reason why i was asking is when i go to my local apple store, the MBP units feel warm to the touch as they are on all day. But, they are open as well.

 man, its a computer... and computers get warm (hot) when they are working... nothing wrong with that

As mentioned, there is no worry with using any MB or MBP in clamshell mode. Apple specifically specify that this is a feature.

I've used my Core Duo MBP in clamshell mode many times without any issues. And the Core Duo is supposedly the hottest of all in the family.

I understand they can get warm when they are working, but some get really warm to the touch and shut themselves down. I've seen it multiple times with pc's so I was just checking before i made the same mistake.
