i look at it this way

if your parents are buying it for you, it's unlikely you're working, so therefore, ergo, you don't need a professional machine.

That's about right.

I also agree with whoever said get the 15" mbp + a monitor. Better cost, and better portability - that's the route I'll likely be going. Once I finish saving up the $1800 I'll need for a refurb.

why don't u tell your friend to book an appointment with a private shopper, to take her folks to a local apple store, and have the private shopper convince the parents to shell out money for the MBP??

after all, that's what the shoppers (and none of us) are getting PAID to DO! :)

LOL. The private shopping guy kept trying to get me to buy a Macbook; I'm like are you kidding me? I told him what I planned to do and then he told me a Macbook is what I want; I told him to get me the 17" MBP :D

And a lot of these posts about viruses, crashes, etc, are not just related to the Macbook Pro; seriously in my opinion, if you need to convince your parents your need a MBP, you obviously don't need one. If you needed one, they'd know to suit your needs; I think they have more experiences on needs and wants considering (and hopefully) they are more than 2 times your age.

It is just a matter of preference, vista isn't as slow as people tend to think.

I was going to get into a long (rant-laden) tirade in response............

But I won't. I will simply convey to you a fraction of my frustration with the other platform.

Pro Tools in Vista? Never again. Nuff said.
:apple:

 I'm actually surprised by the number of negative posts here, especially when the original poster asked from positive information. I've been thinking about getting my first Mac and been visiting these boards a lot, but maybe I shouldn't. Doesn't sound like there is any love for the MBP. :(

We're not talking about 'love for the MBP', we're talking about whether or not an MBP is a practical choice for the OP's needs.

Again,

i honestly cant believe that im reading these posts of making his friend pay for the laptop. If the parents are willing to pay why would she dish out her own cash? Hell, if my own parents would want to buy me a computer without money being an issue id let them. Id think youd be stupid to say no... And the whole thing about not appreciating the computer cause you didnt purchase it with ur own money is another dumb argument. If your parents taught u anything and raise u right u would know to appreciate what they buy and give you.

I think what the members are hinting at (and i'm hoping i'm wrong) is that by this individual *needing* reasons to justify the purchase of this machine, there is an imminent dilution of the Pro :apple: Name, as well as needlessly having lots and lots of power.

Many people would freak out at the thought of buying a 2000+ computer, but those specific audiences (Extreme Power Users, Individuals who use their machine for their line of work in critical environments, and maybe higher education (many researchers I know must have their machine on the go but need 30 inches of real estate in the lab)).

However the OP's 'friend' sounds like they may meet none of the criteria, therefore it seems trivial to have to find reasons that they may like this machine, when cheaper, more suitable machines are available.

I agree.

The only thing i was implying was that I cannot understand why she should need to point out the good points of the mbp if her parents are willing to buy it and have more than enough cash for that.

I bought a lot of notebooks for my girl friends and they were all looking for 13-14 inch models because the 15-17 inch ones were too big and heavy...

If she didn't know about mbp to start with why does she absolutely want it?

I had the serious thought that this post was meant for the OP not for his friend :p sorry if im wrong ... but seriously having a 17' mbp with all the extra and not knowing how to say how awesome a mbp is makes me cry :D

another case of "WANTING" something without actually needing it.
reminds me of a friend who previously bought a PDA phone and don't even need nor use the PDA function. she simply text, chat and call.
reason for buying..
it looks so good in the "sex and the city" episode. :D

Oh there IS love for the MBP.. and there's also the inevitable hate for it..

If all you need is good things to convince someone to buy a MBP, THIS website have all the marketing keywords that you'll ever need. :D

That's fair. I understand where some people are coming from regarding need vs. want, but as someone who is thinking about getting their very first mac, comments about it being an expensive paper weight and faulty sleep modes is disconcerting.

You'll need to hang around a lot longer to learn to weed through the complaints. One basic rule is that you'll ALWAYS hear a disproportionate view of products on forums. Most of the time it is skewed towards the bad, because those without problems are off enjoying their gear.

If you go to any manufacturer's forums, you'll hear stories that make you never want to buy anything.
