It's kind of crazy that Apple is right now making and packaging millions of these things, and we still aren't certain what they are going to be.

The fact of the matter is that we have no idea when this device will arrive. With each passing day that brings nothing concrete such as leaks or more specifics on internals, a spring 2023 launch becomes less and less likely. This is why I believe spring 2024 is a better bet.

Ugh. Just going to reinforce to Apple that people want bigger phones. But everything they have done so far has reinforced that idea - the Mini Pro is the only thing that can prove it wrong. Personally I went 12 Pro to 13 Mini, I would go 14 Mini again, but won't have that option. And the SE getting bigger means it is going to sell like hotcakes, but at the expense of the new 14/14 Max, for all the people that just want a giant phone.

The mini was always put in a middle seat position, so tech enthusiasts have to "downgrade" and compromise on features to buy it. And it wasn't cheaper, so the SE ate up the rest of the people that actually wanted a small phone that would have paid for a Mini, had the SE not existed. Basically always doomed to fail in sales numbers.

I’m writing on one and with a case, they are ridiculously big and and heavy (though quite good without a case - if you can get a grip on it, as this thing is like a heavy bar of soap).

So I hear you…

But let’s say you want to spend $400 and you look at android phones around this price point too. Those phones are big & heavy.

So I think it’s important to put the ‘XR SE’ in context.
Yeah, fair enough. I went for it at the time because it was cheap. But I got so sick of the size/weight that I recently got a 13 Mini! Ahahaha... Yeah, I know a lot of people hate that phone, but I think it's awesome. To me the size is perfect—I can do pretty much anything with one hand. Mind you, I don't honestly do a ton of stuff on my phone because I almost always have my laptop with me.

No doubt. We may get some confirmation of this in about a week when the 14s arrive and we learn which phone will occupy the $499 price point for the next 12 months. Some (I.e. not an exhaustive list) possibilities are:

1. The 11 gets a stay of execution and sticks around for another year instead of getting pushed out as would normally happen to the bottom rung legacy phone. Taking one for the team, the 12 Mini gets the axe instead.

2. The 12 Mini goes from $599 to $499 which would confirm your hypothesis while the 11 exits on schedule.

3. Both the 11 and 12 Mini go away, and there is no $499 iPhone for the next year. Instead, there is a bigger ($170) gap between the lowest priced legacy phone(s) and the SE.

There has been more than one report on SE 2022 sales being somewhat abysmal. This is likely at least in some part because of the legacy form factor being too long in the tooth now. At some point you need to move to a more modern design, or you just won’t find enough people wiling to pony up, even at a ~$400 price.
The 11 will be out as Apple would probably want an all 5G lineup.

I think the lineup will be SE, 12 mini, 12, and 13 mini and so on.

If the SE is not selling, its probably because it's ridiculously priced in some markets. In my country, the 2022 SE is priced higher than the 11. The 64 GB SE is around $540. It's ridiculous for a 64GB and outdated look phone. The 128GB model is $640, more expensive than a 256GB Galaxy S21 FE.

Look folks. If you're wishing for FaceID and such on the iPhone SE, then it wasn't made for you. You have 4 other models to choose from that have FaceID. I have 1 model to choose from that has TouchID.

So, leave it alone please!
Yes, if they do make a bigger screened SE that still has TouchID, I'll be first in line. SE2 is a bit too small to read. Been waiting for that SE+ they mentioned

The mini looks great. It’s crazy how we all felt that the 4.8 inch iPhone 6 was big, now. I guess the market has spoken though and people want big screen sizes.

Jesus how many times does this have to be repeated, SE is the cheap phone not the small phone.
The man himself Tim Cook stated the SE is for those who like 'small iphones' when he introduced the Iphone SE3. This could change of course, but these words came straight out of his mouth.

I thought that the next SE would likely use the Touch ID from the Air.

Maybe it will - but you have to think that it would require redesigning the sleep button the the XR body, the innards behind this button in the chassis & a front facing array component without Face ID that fits the XR body (which basically doesn’t exist).

That sounds a lot of work to me. Surely it’s just cheaper to use the iPhone 11/XR Face ID.

And Apple must’ve bought over a billion units of the second revision of this component, so you’d think that it’s now not too expensive for them.
If you are right even better :)

Tim Cook also said they had many Intel macs to be released in the pipeline during the Apple silicon transition keynote. Yet it's an obvious lie. Tim Cook during presentation is a salesman. Wake me up when you have a truly honest salesman. ;)
They also repeatedly said they weren’t merging Mac OS and iOS, and yet, what do we see every year? More Apple apps & Mac OS-specific tools/apps/components being replaced by lesser, clumsier, and buggier, iOS versions.

Whatever corporations say, disbelieve it and pay attention to their actions.

Just marketing, Tim Cook would sell his mother to try and sell more phones.

In the same way that we can expect Tim Cook to suddenly fall in love with advertising in many of Apple's core apps as people tighten their belts and buy less iPhones and services due to the energy crisis that's going to hit the world this (northern hemisphere) winter.

I think the lineup will be SE, 12 mini, 12, and 13 mini and so on.
Unfortunately, they did decide to drop the 12 Mini. So either the margin simply isn’t there to support that price, or they knew it would pull too many people away from the SE for just $70 more. As a result, there is indeed now a $170 gap between the SE and the cheapest legacy phone.

This does nothing but throw more cold water on the idea that a Mini-based SE could perhaps yet be possible in 2024 instead of an 11-based SE. Still not impossible, but at this point the rumor that the next SE will be based on the 6” LCD form factor is probably true. Then, even when it’s time some day for the SE to go OLED, the larger 6” form factor is far more likely than a shrink down to 5.4”.

For small phone fans its bleak. Perhaps the only hope is an iPad-Mini-like device that charts its own path and does not necessarily fit into the pricing model of its larger siblings. Such a model could still use the Mini form factor, but at a higher price point than the SE, yet still not updated yearly like the other phones. Unlikely? Yes. But who knows.

Slap an LCD and touch ID power button on the 12 Mini = SE2023.

Then we will have a lineup of phones that have the same styling.
