Yes there are costs above and beyond the phone itself.
It's called total cost of ownership, and lots of things are sold without marketing the total cost you pay to own it.
Cars, houses, satellite TV, ad nauseum and on anon...
TCO for an iphone?
ok,
Camp 1 Current iPhone owners either in a family plan or not
Camp 2 New iPhone owners either in a family plan or not.
Further more we will NOT take into acct. Fan/discounts etc. It will be based on 1 iPhone per acct.
Camp1;
iPhone $199/$299
Data pkg upgrade $10 (already paying $20 for 2g data)
Text pkg purchase $5 (matches the 200 already included in the 2g pkg)
Base service cost remains the same.
New Case? $50
New Dock $30
So Out of Pocket cost is between $279 and $379
Then the new service pkgs are 24*$15=$360
So for an existing iPhone user the new TCO is $639 and $739* If they sale the old iPhone they will of course lower this ALOT.
So $639/24 =$26.63 a month $739/24 =$30.79 a month for upgrading to the 3g phone from 2g. I'd bet most people can cut a $1 day from their spending habits.
Camp2;
iPhone $199/$299
Data pkg $30
Text pkg purchase $5
Base service cost $59 for 900 mins and all the bells/whistles
New Case? $50
New Dock $30
So Out of Pocket cost is between $279 and $379
Then the new service pkgs are 24*$94=$2256
So for a NEW iPhone user the new TCO is $2535 and $2635
Now depending on who/what they are switching from they could be looking at a camp1 TCO
