So do the mods delete spam posts in threads? Is that what this is about? When a thread languishes too long, it becomes a target for spammers, and we're not seeing the spam because it's already deleted?

If that's the case, then it makes sense to close the thread. As others have pointed out, if you have a specific question about iBooks, you can always start another thread.

Well, you should. Especially if your question is "do you think iBooks are coming out next Tuesday?"

But if there was some specific rumor you don't feel has been discussed enough, and the thread it appeared in is closed, then by all means, start a new thread.

i quickly browsed through that ibook thread and though not particularly exciting to me, it didn't seem any worse than the majority of others thread, and more on topic then most, especially those of a certain lenght.
maybe there was a particular stretch of posts that irked the mod, but I didn't see them.

Reading the thread now does not give you an idea of what was going on-- a number of posts (at least 50) were (quite properly) deleted on Saturday night. One poster had posted to it about 30 times on Friday and Saturday, often 3 times in a row; other posters were calling him out on it.

Given the way it was going I can't argue with the decision to kill the thread. I'm sure another one will get going in response to a rumor....

Thank you for clearing up what was going on.
From what you have said, it makes sense that the thread was closed as there is no other way to stop the poster from posting in that thread. Also, if people in the thread are calling someone out on it, this is also an indicator for me, that the tread should be closed.

Okay, That's what happened. I understand now. I just wish this would have been made clearer in the message.

On another note, can't you penalize a members for over-posting and eventually making a thread close. I know it disrupts everything when people spam.

Thanks for clearing everything up for all of us though :D

I liked that thread. I also just realized that there is no crying emoticon.

Oh well. I respect the mod's decision... he closed the thread just in time for the release of NEW iBOOKS TOMORROW!!!!!1!!11!one!!

This spamming behavior warrants shutting down a thread in my opinion. It's always best to make sure you know the facts and circumstances before jumping to conclusuions or forming judgements. In this case, and knowing this information, I side with the Mods.

And now perhaps that this matter is essentially settled, this thread should be closed as well...

Well the petition failed (4 pitiful signatures  ) and the thread on bringing back the thread failed.

I'm surprised this thread hasn't been wastelanded.

I don't have a whiney brat smiley, but this is close enough...

This doesn't need to continue. As has already been said, if you have an issue then take it up with the person, or with another admin/mod if you don't feel comfortable talking direct to them. There's really no need to "protest" about it.
