Who can take a sunrise
Sprinkle it with dew
Cover it with choc'late and a miracle or two
The Candy™ Man
Oh, the Candy™ Man can
The Candy™ Man can
'Cause he mixes it with love
And makes the world taste good...

If a trademark system allows a company exclusive access to a word irrespective of how it's presented (such as logo) and the nature of the products it represents (such as what the game is like) then that to me suggests the system is broken.

For instance if someone were to make a game that played like Bejewelled and Candy Saga and called it Candy Adventure with a similar overall presentation then that would obviously be infringing, but for a company like King to go after something like Banner Saga just shows they are complete trolls.

I'd be extremely surprised if the UK/EU ruling does in fact grant exclusive use of a common word like candy, but then I'm no expert.

Unfortunately, it comes down to the problem of the closed nature of the Apple Store because all apps are published with Apple's sole discretion irrespective of legalities. Apple has traditionally been extremely conservative and erred on supporting larger and more profitable developers.

Yes, there are a lot of apps in the appstore that are complete ripoffs of successful games. If that is all they went after, sure, this would be great. But that's not all they go after.

It doesn't. The problem is, that doesn't stop companies sending out bullying legal letters pretending that it does.

The breakage in the system, is the risk-free nature of such baseless threats. It's really looking like there needs to be some protection for small businesses against legalistic harassment.

Am I the only one who's been so off-put by the in your face advertising of Candy Crush, almost to the point it's like spam? I've seen TV commercials for it, and I swear every so often I click on something on my phone and I get a pop up for that crappy game or am directed right to it in the app store on my phone. This has happened NUMEROUS times and that alone has put me so off to that game that I hope it gets flushed down the toilet of the world's filth.

The UK currently has 879 registered trademarks containing the word 'Candy' or a misspelling of it, many of them are just 'Candy' and the sky hasn't fallen in yet.

I wonder what Hasbro Games has to say about this, as Candy Land looks eerily similar to Candy Crush in design and the fact they are both games that use the word "Candy."

This is just ridiculous.

Thought so. It'll be interesting to see how Apple responds.

This is partially the copyright and trademark offices fault.

I'm pretty sure Candy Land Milton Bradley is laughing their asses off at KING.

Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
Well this is no different to the stupidity of trademarks and patents that Apple and others have done, no different at all. Just pay someone somewhere enough money and apparently, you CAN literally do anything in this world.

I'm hoping film titles start to trademark words next... give it time..

No matter how much I hate CC I agree on the trademark... They made it extremely successful...

What? You agree that nobody else can use the word 'candy' because they've made a successful game? That makes no sense. This means if you decided to launch a game called Zombie Candy or something they could go after you.

Hate that more and more games are making you pay as you go and not small amounts, it's why I haven't bothered with the latest Angry Birds and stopped playing Candy Crush.
