Well I was interested in trying this out but after reading some of the comments on this thread, it sounds like it's a turd burger wrapped in a fail bun.

I got sick and tired of Apple Mail just not working on my Mac so I recently switched to Spark but I'm not overly impressed with that either.

I'll stick to Airmail. There UI is amazing and the ability to show all emails from one sender with LITERALLY ONE CLICK is the #1 reason why I refuse to use anything else.

Another MacRumors article that leaves out key information… this time failing to mention Proton makes a macOS app that directs their email into Apple Mail, so you can use it alongside other email sources in an interface you already know.
I use this. I just wish I could also sync the calendar as well.
The app is called Proton Mail Bridge and runs locally to handle encryption before emails hit the wire.

I don’t know that I’d call their legal claims “loosely defined legal jurisdiction bullcrap”

Look up Article 13 of the Swiss Federal Constitution and the Federal Act of Date Protection. Here are links to each that I’ve dug up…

It is anything but loosely defined. I wish our 4th Amendment read as strictly as these laws.

I'm calling their security claims loosely defined legal jurisdiction bullcrap.

I think you need to check their actual statements on these issues which can be found clearly if you dig around regarding the climate activist who was prosecuted. They are bound by Swiss data protection law yes but that isn't perfect. Firstly, they can be required to collect user data under mandate of their government or by court order. Secondly, while they say their encryption is not possible to circumvent, the government may demand that this is not the case at some point. Then what do you do? (also notably Swiss government has sharing agreements with Europol).

Currently they have defended this position reasonably well and provided only IP and device metadata but you know where political pressure goes and, well they have all your data already...

Oh notably (or not) I'm half Swiss🇨🇭. Don't expect the country to be a bastion of common sense or data protection.

Also have you used Proton Mail? Have you sent yourself a password protected email from a proton account to a non proton account?

If you have, then you know better than to say they have failed to do anything different to secure email. As long as the proton user initiates contact with the non proton user…. it’s pretty slick dude.

This is a principal objection of mine and bad security posture.

There are only security guarantees if you point at the sun and stand on one leg. If you accidentally put two legs down you're in a Supermax by lunch time on Thursday.

Having worked in the defence sector, you do NOT mix documents with different classifications.
