Google attracts those who get excited when they see the word free. While it’s true their service is reasonably reliable, it’s the ease of use and convenience that hooks millions.

Often those who advocate for Google fail to read and comprehend the terms and conditions which causes many users to be completely unaware of the risks.

Then there's those who say "I have nothing to hide" a revealing response that confirms their ignorance or complete lack of responsibility that comes with managing one's online presence.

At the end of the day some people simply don't care about their personal information floating around the internet.

It's a big difference whether "the cloud" (=your data) is located in America (Microsoft and all similar services, btw) or if it is located in Europe - at least for us Europeans!
But ONLY if there's no US player within cloud infrastructure or the company itself. Bitwarden / 1Password / Microsoft and other companies EU jurisdiction Clouds are nonsense as the Cloud ACT is giving US full access.

I know very, very few people who don't get excited by free ;)

I also know very, very few people, including those "technically inclined", who read Terms of Service documents, privacy policies, etc. That would include a more than a fair bit of folks who like to still post, almost a decade later, that "Gmail reads your emails to serve ads". That hasn't been true for a very long time and they are very upfront about it and what information they do use to serve ads.

Nevertheless places like Reddit, etc. exist where people post this garbage freely.

Indeed. The problem comes from people blindly restating vendor claims like "my stuff is backed up in the cloud". They were sold a lie.

Google and Apple CAN solve that problem. The problem is they want to sell you their cloud solution so they don't.

Microsoft are the worst at this. They had perfectly good backup software built into windows but now try and ram onedrive down your throat as a "backup solution".

I disagree. You can't solve an education problem. Apple provides a very good local backup solution with every Mac - Time Machine. Can I tell you how many Mac users I know, the general public type, that use Time Machine? Zero.

The older Windows backup solution required an external drive, just like Time Machine does. People are cheap and don't want to spend more money on external drives, even with education sometimes. Likely why Microsoft went the route it did. OneDrive "backups" are an easier sell than something like Time Machine or the old Windows Backup.

Anyhow way off the rails at this point wrt to Proton Sheets.

Not really. It's mutable i.e. a compromised or defective machine and software can actively modify and destroy it. And it's tied to the same security context as your machine which means account issues can shoot both the primary data and the first line backup. It really should be separated carefully in that respect as well.

I would treat it as a convenience only if you choose to use it.

I do proper backups plus just random crap thrown in a folder "just in case", all with cloud storage. Arq backup with one of the many cloud providers it supports is a fantastic solution both on Mac and Windows. Arq and Backblaze B2 are a great combo.

For "normal" folks OneDrive does provide file versioning and ransomware detection (at least it used to. I havent used OneDrive in ages as the Mac app is terrible). Not perfect but better than nothing for sure.

Google is not a safe solution to anything. Who cares about advertising when "other" people can access your Google stuff etc. Personal experiences. Apple's iCloud is like a fortrice compared to Google. If there is one company you don't want to trust with privacy, it is Google. I don't care what their Terms or policies state.
