Congrats, Erik! Lots of luck with that fancy new CPU.

Quick question, what theme is that? That black system theme looks really cool!

very nice to see its working out :) the sonnet firmware patcher prolly got confuse by the fact you already had the giga designs patch installed. that must be a very fast G4 now :) Just needs a Graphics card upgrade...(im thinking if the FireGL X3s wont work maybe you could find something like a Geforce 6800 or 7800 since those are known to work in QSs...)
Is that any better than the Radeon 9800 Pro I have already? And if I have to tape pins, the chances are that it's not going to work. So far any card I have had to tape pins in this Mac has failed to work.

Erik,

I have a working flashed 256MB GeForce 6800 somewhere, if you want it for the cost of postage. They famously don't work in MDDs (just kernel panics at the desktop on boot), but are regarded as one of the very best cards for a Quicksilver. It's considerably faster than a Radeon 9800, but it only has DVI and VGA ports (rather than the dual DVI I know you like).

Fantastic! I will absolutely take you up on that offer!

I will PM you a little later. Kind of in between stuff this particular morning. Also, the 9800 Pro is DVI/VGA. I've had to stagger my ADC/DVI displays (one per video card) to make this all work.

Thank you!

It's a combination of things.

First off, the theme itself is called Black Mac OS X and it's a Magnifique theme. The dock and icons I forget the names of at the moment, but they are Candybar items.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/2939gvztnpmxsam/Black_Theme.zip?dl=0

This is everything. Note that some stuff may not work or you may have higher version numbers of the apps involved.

Lastly, if you apply the theme, make sure your menubar is NOT transparent. It needs to be opaque (either white or gray) or the theme will not make it look black.

Erik, if you don't want the 9800, would you consider passing it on?

I have no problem with that. It's going to be a while until harrymatic can get a hold of the other card though and somewhat more again before I get it, place it and make sure it works.

But if all of that checks, then sure.

Keep in mind, however, that you will be inheriting my issues.

1. When I first got the card, some small piece broke off of it. I have no idea what it does but the card never seemed to have any issues.
2. The fan on the card failed early.
3. In my clumsy attempts to replace the fan, what should have been a straightforward and easy job resulted in me burning out whatever it is on the card that controls the fan, plus burning out the replacement fan. I'll ship you all three fans (the original, the replacement and the replacement to the replacement) with it if you want to take a crack at it.
4. Because there is no fan, I borrowed the heat sink from a PC video card I was never able to flash and placed it on there. But it's supposed to have a fan with the heatsink, so it has heat issues.
5. Because there is no fan I do not recommend any heavy gaming or intense activity that will require heavy use of the GPU. I use my QS for design work, video and web browsing. So, no real intense stuff there.
6. Because there is no fan part of my fan setup inside the case blows air into the video card space to keep temps down.

Little red dots and lines will appear over time on the screen. If the screen refreshes they disappear, but will come back. You can wipe them out by marquee selecting them, but they return. Little blue dots sometimes pop up as well. Only a restart will make them disappear. That I believe is because the GPU is overheating. Which is why I have an internal fan directed at the card.

Not trying to dissuade you, just letting you know what problems you stand to get along with the card itself.

Sounds good. In my QS I have a pretty sweet fan setup rolling, so it will not be a problem to rig something up. Thanks!

No worries.

You'll know when I've got the card because I won't be able to stop myself from posting pictures. :D

Super excited for you man, you'll have your dream QS :)
Well, I have it right now. If that card works (and harrymatic says it does) then I guess that will be the cherry on top.

But for the moment…I have everything I set out to achieve with the actual Mac itself. I can now turn my focus to 21" HD Cinema Displays.

If anyone has one of those they wish to donate…I'd happily take it off your hands! :D

Be careful, the glue on the border turns the LCD purplish. Its not terribly noticeable, but its definitely there.

Glad you got the dual up and running! Is there any particular software you use that shows a significant improvement?

Everything. Including TenFourFox.

Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat Pro, Suitcase and Entourage 2008 so far. The Mac is also booting to the desktop faster. It's just faster all around. I'm really liking it!

No, I haven't tried that yet. I may get to it soon though.

Thank you sir!

Sorry to tag you again, but apparently the card has temp sensors and iStat Menus can read them.

Right now the GPU is solid around 167º with 127º for the case.

This is a little higher than another post I found here, but I'm not worried too much because my case is packed.

The GeForce 6800 does run a lot hotter than the ATI Radeon 9800, it's nothing to worry about - those temperatures are within spec. Nice that it shows up in iStat, I never had it work long enough to find out.

Well, I have to say that with this, I have FINALLY achieved all I set out to do internally.

• Dual 1.8Ghz CPUs
• Radeon 9800 Pro
• Six displays
• USB 2.0 (with additional Firewire 400 ports)
• SATA hard drives
• Bluetooth 2.0

Now, I can finally turn my attention to collecting the rest of the Cinema HD displays I intend to use.

I use Adobe CS4 on this Mac a lot (it's my design/layout platform) so this is going to help immensely with that.

Details to follow soon of course. Looking forward to getting this later this week!
Resurrecting this ancient thread to ask how did you get six displays going? I have the same video card.

Edit: Just saw the previous post. You had a couple of PCI video cards in there too.

Right. The NVIDIA was the AGP card and there were two PCI cards. A Radeon 9200 and a flashed Radeon 7000.

When it comes down to it, I only really need the primary video card to be the best I can get. I really only use two primary displays and the rest tend to serve as stuff I put things on, such as folders and drives. You don't need a lot of GPU power for that.

However, once I got my MacPro, getting the best video card I could get became an expensive proposition - and also one that wasn't necessary because less expensive GPUs are capable of giving me what I want/need. Consequently, my MP doesn't have the higher end GPUs out there (as I used to).
