If there is Facebook on your iPad, turn off its background refresh and location service in the Settings. Facebook is a major killer for iOS devices running 7.0 and higher.

Thanks guys. I've been making slight changes to the settings to maximize my experience. I'll tell you what, it really sucks you can't have multiple profiles on the iPad. I can't use iCloud because I don't want my whole family reading my text messages or seeing all my photos. Without iCloud I can't use things that are beneficial for the family, like calendars and notes. It really has put a dampener on my first apple tablet experience. Hopefully in iOS 8 multiple users will be enabled. The guy in the store said that samsung just released this feature recently for their tablets and apple will most likely follow lol!

The trick is you can be signed in to more than one iCloud account at a time.

Get your own Apple ID for iCloud. Sign in to that under iCloud. This will give you your own photo stream, separate from your family.

Under "Mail, Calendar, etc." add your family iCloud account, make sure calendar and notes are turned on. Now you have two calendars in your calendar app, and two notes account in your notes app. You can easily write events and notes into the appropriate calendar or notes account. In the calendar app, you can view both calendars at once, or you can hide one or the other calendar. The notes app has an all accounts view and an one account at a time view.

For iMessage and FaceTime, again, sign into your personal account. You'll probably want to use the family account for iTunes & App Stores, so you can share apps and purchased media with your family.

I'm confused. How can you be signed into multiple iCloud accounts at once? I already have an account for my iPhone and Mac. Are you saying to make another account for family use?

Also I have multiple music videos in my video app and I can't figure out how to remove them. They have the iCloud icon next to them so I'm assuming they are not taking up storage. How do I remove these videos anyway?

iCloud accounts are basically email accounts. So on an iPad, there is the main iCloud account, which you sign in in Settings > iCloud.

Then there is Settings > Mail, Calendar, Contacts. Here, you can add as many email accounts as you want, including other iCloud accounts.

So a family could have:
husband@icloud.com
wife@icloud.com
child1@icloud.com
child2@icloud.com

So each person should use their personal iCloud account to sign in to Settings > iCloud on their own device. But if the husband and wife wants to see each other's calendars, then they can add the other person's iCloud account under Settings > Mail, Calendar etc., and just turn on the calendar.

As for the Mac -- is it shared among your family? Do you have multiple user accounts set up on the Mac?

And I had been assuming that each of your family members have their own iDevice, but I just realized that you may be using the iPad as a shared device for your family? That might require a different strategy. Let me know the devices you have in your family, who will be using what, and what you want to share and what you want to keep private, and I'll do my best to tell you what is possible and what isn't.

Settings > Video. Turn "show all videos" to off. Also repeat under Settings > Music, in case you have music you purchased from iTunes.

Wow thanks for the help. Yes, I have just one iPad which me and my wife will be using. I am not using iCloud because I don't want her to see all my iMessages, photo streams, email, etc. It's not that I'm trying to hide stuff but we do have a level of mutual privacy :)

She has a Mac and iPhone like I do. We both use calendar so we can stay up to date on each others schedules. Calendar syncs across all our devices. I think somebody has to be logged into the main iCloud account in order for the calendars, notes, etc to work. That won't work because that means she can see my iMessages and other stuff.

Hmmm, yes, sharing an iPad can be tricky.

iMessage login is actually separate from iCloud login, so the iPad can be logged in to iCloud without being logged into iMessage. Just go to Settings > iMessage and make sure you are logged out.

As for photo stream and email, you can turn those off once you log in to iCloud. Your wife could turn them back on if she wants to snoop, but she'll have to do that deliberately. She wouldn't inadvertently stumble onto your pictures and email, if you see what I mean?

I would strongly recommend you use iCloud, at least for find my iPad and iCloud backup. Those two functions are invaluable if your iPad is ever lost, stolen, or damaged. Just go to Settings > iCloud, login, then turn on Find My iPad and backup, then turn off everything else if you feel uncomfortable having them on.

I don't think there is a stock weather app for the iPad. It doesn't matter as it doesn't get any better than the "Yahoo Weather" app.

I love yahoo weather as well and also try an app called MyRadar. It goes straight to a radar screen and is most useful. I rarely upgrade to the pro version of anything, but I did with this app just to support it.

Ok I turned iCloud back on but I am only using it for calendars, find my iPad, and notes. iMessage will remain off. I use gmail for my email so I will just use the app to check email and log off when done. I don't use iCloud email so there should be no problems there.

When the new iPad is released everything will be back to normal because my wife will get this one and I'll buy the new one :) Unless Apple comes out with the ability to have multiple profiles.

iPads are the best for trips! I'll be leaving for a week long trip to Vegas next week and I'm excited to use it on my flight over and throughout my trip to catch up on news etc.

Congrats on your new iPad :D

iOS 8 is now out in beta, and unfortunately, no multiple profiles. :(

But I'm sure you and your wife will enjoy having your own iPads rather than having to share one. ;)

I can guarantee you it will be the shortest trip ever. I keep almost missing my stop on my morning commute because I'm using my iPad, and it's my stop before I expect it.

Maybe it will be available with the new iPad? False hope I guess. This is apples way of making people buy more iPads.

Multiple user profiles? No, it's such a complicated feature, you can't just sneak it into the OS like that. There are rumors that the next iPads will have split screen apps, sort of like in Win8, and while Apple hasn't officially announced it yet, devs testing iOS 8 beta have found code in the beta for the split screen mode. So if Apple is planning to introduce multiple user profiles in the next iPad, code for that would have to be already present in the beta, and devs would have found them by now.

And yes, Apple would like people to buy more iPads, but also, multiple user profiles isn't that easy to implement, either. For me, the biggest question is how to handle apps -- does each user get their own set of apps? What happens if all users want their own installation of a large app, like Infinity Blade? Having three copies of that on a 16GB ipad would take up most of the avaiable storage space. So we'd want the app to keep separate data for each user. Now the dev has to rewrite the app. And in that case, what happens to "legacy" apps without multi-user support?

I don't know. Let's ask samsung as they were able to do it with their latest tablet :)

Actually, I believe one of the Jelly Bean updates added that feature so it's not exactly exclusive to Samsung.

Hmm, just checked my cheapie Chinese Nexus 7 clone. As of Android 4.2.2 (firmware update 2013.05.23), it had support for user profiles. The actual Nexus devices should have gotten it much earlier than that. Alas, as I'm typing this on the iPad, I don't really want to open a new tab to research and end up losing this post.

The way stock Android JB handles things, app installs are universal. Each user just gets their own settings for the apps. Granted, on Android, your "desktop" so to speak doesn't contain the apps themselves. They're just links to apps. Apple would likely have to adopt an app drawer similar to Android or Windows, else, it's going to be majorly annoying to have a bunch of apps someone else installed on your Springboard.

Do you really need to worry about battery on an iPad though? I understand the phone but i have never experienced that much of a difference on iPad with adjusting stuff. Battery is amazing on any IPad;)

True, was just giving out a suggestion. Personally I hate seeng that GPS icon popping up all the time, it makes me wonder 'what on earth requires my location right now???' All the time, so I've setup my Location Services to only be active for Google Maps, Instagram, Banking app and Weather app.

iPad battery life is indeed amazing though,I agree, I never worry about mine, unless I'm gaming, that can eat a hell of a lot of battery but otherwise by the time I go to bed my iPad is still at around 60%, best battery I've had on any gadget I think.

Yes but i've come to recognize that charging the battery takes multiple hours :(

Having used iPhones since 2010 and iPads since 2011, I can assure you the screen is highly resistant to scratches, and it is almost impossible to scratch the screen if you are a little careful with it, like in the case of iPhone not putting it in a pocket with coins, keys etc.

I can't even think of a way to scratch the glass on the iPad. Still, if you feel protector gives you peace of mine, use it and congrats on the purchase, it's a beautiful device.

I use my ipad to take notes with the adonit jot pro stylus ans sometimes there is a particle that gets stuck between the plastic disc and the screen that might make a scratch. I have a screen protector just for that reason and i do see some scratches on the screen protector. Not sure if it would scratch the screen since it is a harder material but i'd rather not try.

Stylus definitely seems a good enough reason for using the screen protector.
