Well, if this generation has taught us anything, it's that cheap parts and quality problems will NOT hamper your console's commercial success, as long as it's cheaper.

I'm still trying to establish the PS2 backwards compatibility situation as I beleive it is making a return. I'll leave my original 40GB unit in the front room as part of the home cinema and get a new Japanese slim-line to go in the living room for some Guilt Gear ^ Core and King of Fighters '98 UM.

Too bad. I'm not a big fan of the design (color yes, design no).
OT, are the 60GB models that desirable? I know it has something to do with PS2 compatibility. I have one and rarely play PS2 games on it...I may look into trading it locally if a good offer comes up.
