go for PS3..

i am able to contribute little here but there is one reason i am posting this post.. to tell you not to get an XBOX 360. i have been through two, both getting rings of death and i got a full refund back --- i hate them...

i am now slowly thinking about buying a PS3 but i just wanted to tell you not to buy an XBOX 360.. several of my friends have been experiencing problems with theirs. deep inside im sure it runs vista home basic/home premium as a base OS with the UI modified...

None of the European releases ever had backwards compatibility.

hi,

this isn't true. I have a release version 60gb or the UK and this has the full backward compatibility with the emotion chip and doesnt use the software emulation the the later models use.

this was dropped from the top end models because of the extra price of the more expensive chips and replaced with software emulation for price

however I bought one and at release thought wow this is a great feature - how many ps2 games have i played on it - zero

Well my PS3 arrives today! And GTA IV tomorrow! Ill tell you how it all goes!

So are there any full HD games yet? I was a tad disappointed to find that GTA IV was only 630p....

Oh well you cant expect perfection!

I just bought mine through that Amazon deal.
40GB PS3 £300
GTA IV £40
Rainbow Six £15
HDMI Cable Free

Now I just need to get hold of a TV to do it all justice.. I think it'll have to wait until after exams, like this lot was supposed to!

To Brainstorm: are you taking GCSE's aswell or is it something else...

Well I play it on my dell 24" 1920 x 1200 screen and that seems to do it some justice!

Its great!

I own all three games consoles and have done since launch of each one. There are a few things which you should consider before you choose which one to buy.

If you are buying it purely as a games system then there is no doubt in my mind that you should go for Xbox 360 - the breadth of titles available along with a far superior controller and multiplayer service mean that it is currently unbeaten in the console world.

If you intend to use the console for media (movie playback especially) then PS3 is the route to go down. The console is much more flexible - you can copy movies directly to the hard drive over WiFi from a computer or from any USB drive. It really is unmatched in this respect. The downside is that you have to put up with a pretty crappy controller for gameplay and many games require installation. GTA IV needs over 3GB of the hard drive just to play, Gran Turismo 5 requires 6GB and Metal Gear Solid 4 needs 4.6GB. You cannot play many of the games without letting them eat up a chunk of your hard drive.

While some of the games on the PlayStation Store are unique, there are so few of them at the moment. This is in stark contrast with Xbox 360's Live Arcade, which features over 100 downloadable games across all genres. There are plenty of absolutely awesome games on there (Marble Blast Ultra and Boom Boom Rocket being two of my favourites) and I do believe it's possible to buy an Xbox 360 and not buy any retail boxed games and still have a good time for a long time.

The reality is that Xbox 360 is going to be the number 3 console around the world by the time this generation is over. PS3 and Wii are outselling it in almost every market at the moment and the strength of the PlayStation brand is going to propel the PS3 to great sales figures. However, developing games for PS3 is more difficult and you'll find that many games are using Xbox 360 as the "lead" platform with the PS3 version basically being a simple port job.

I also believe unreservedly that the exclusive games on Xbox 360 are a million times superior to those on PS3. Forza Motorsport 2 is a better game than Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and PS3 also doesn't have any answers to Halo, Gears of War or Project Gotham Racing.

So in short:

Games only = go for Xbox 360
Games + movies = go for PS3

You're wrong. The UK never saw a fully backwards-compatible PS3 released. The original 60GB model which Sony introduced here did NOT include the emotion engine chip and while the number of titles the console supported was vast, not every one worked and many had problems. The current PS3 on sale in the UK is not compatible with any PS2 games.

Who said that Sony is calling back 80GB for DS3's? This is not official and rumor at best. Sony PS3's have been increasing sales exponentially the past 4mths. Maybe in Europe, but I highly doubt it.

If you can you should wait for the Metal Gear Solid Ultimate bundle. Even though both bundles have 1 DS3 controller and are 40GB (no PS2 game support), the Gun Metal Grey bundle will fetch a pretty penny online as its in EXTREMELY limited quantities when it debuts this summer/fall. You'll make enough to buy several games and another PS3 ;)

I think he might have meant that the 80 gigs are no longer in many stores because of the MGS4/DS3 Bundle coming soon.

Ah, well, if you're looking for a justified reason why I said that, then you're looking in the wrong place. I don't like their products, I've never had a good experience, and I haven't bought a product made by Sony, besides ones that come in other things I own (like batteries in computers or whatever) for many many years, nor do I plan on starting. Just my personal heartfelt hatred.

Well, then there is no real reason for you to contribute in this thread if you have no justified reasons for your opinion. you probably just had plain bad luck. I've noticed that sony systems are much more reliable than MSFT and some of the nintendo consoles(not all, but some). I've never had a problem and I'm sure that a vast majority have also never had a problem with sony consoles, while MSFT on the other hand is almost the other way around.

Out of curiosity

Could our good friends in the UK be able to play an American PS3 on their televisions? The reason why I'm asking is because I know the US Dollar has dropped in value versus the Pound, and I'm thinking folks across the pond might be able to get a good deal here. What's the price of a PS3 in the UK right now, is it essentially like here (a 40 gig I've seen as low as USD$399 or GBP201.53 in Pounds)? If it's higher, and they're able to play it over there, hey it's a deal!:D I know there's shipping involved, but maybe the overall costs could be lower.

The import tax which such a product would incur would make any savings virtually evaporate. What is worth remembering though is that the games themselves are not region locked, so you can buy a game from any country and it will work on any PS3.

GTA Love (Rockstar bringing more DLC to PS3)

I'd hate to say this but MS offered $50million to get exclusivity for DLC. In other words the PS3 isn't getting any DLC until MS says so.

Also for the escalated price we pay here (now Sony killed off the £300 PS3+2 games+2 controllers deal) they tried to claim the PS3 as a computer in order to not pay tax on selling the PS3 here. But it failed (obviously, it's a games console) and now the consumers are left to pick up the bill.

Personally I won't even consider one until they bring back PS2 compatibility. It's ridiculous that they can't even offer a software emulation alternative. Considering they built the original PS2 and with the supposed power of the PS3 theres no excuse. My PS2 broke and I'm not prepared to buy a new one and a £300 console on top of that.

Actually, PS3 is getting DLC, just 360 is getting a couple exclusive episodes.

Also, I have a Uk launch PS3, and it uses software emulation, not hardware. And I payed £425 for mine, and its worth every penny! £300 is a bargain!

I'd totally recommend picking one up. Besides the the games, the Blu-Ray player is absolutely stunning and it up converts your DVDs.

Does it really upconvert? Because I looked all over the box and couldn't find mention of this- I knew the blu-ray, but not upconvert- this makes it an even better deal!

I love Sony products- always have. Even back to the day of Betamax- if they had only one that one we would have had great four-head video quality from the start! (showing my age a bit huh!)

I say go for it! I am grabbing one this fall along with a new 40" TV I hope!

It will upscale DVDs if you use an HDMI connection.

One more question: When is the PS3 scheduled to be completely moved to 65nm parts? When it was launched it soaked up around 190 Watts during BR-Playback. Now it´s at 145 Watts bc one part (cpu or gpu I forgot which one was shrunk to 65 nm. When is the next step due? I am willing to take the jump then especially bc Apple TV is underspecd and overpriced (around here) and I am looking for a multimedia solution to put an end to disc juggling.
