Apple will probably get this quickly resolved…by jacking up the 580X configuration by a couple hundred bucks.

We should just be grateful the iMac still comes with a stand.
BURN!

My 2019 5K iMac with i9, Vega 48, 2TB SSD, 40GB RAM, and 5K display WITH STAND looks like a steal at $4K compared to the base Mac Pro setup. So glad I went that route instead. When I go to upgrade it in 5-6 years, a maxed out configuration will probably be faster than the $50K Mac Pro config anyway. The Mac Pro seems to be for large studios and people with a lot of money. I'd be really surprised if many freelancing professionals get one, or even smaller businesses. It seems more economical to get a new iMac Pro every few years.

iMac has been overdue for a redesign, I suspect the next iMac to resemble the front of Display XDR with Nano anti-reflection coating as an option and a similar Pro Stand that may not rotate.

Maybe the imac pro will rotate as an added perk.

With a base price increase to boot ;):p

For any company the price of Display XDR and 2019 MacPro is a business expense. Considering the company has tax room to write it off.

Only people complaining are home consumers, for them there are other options or start a business.

Well spotted! I'm going to keep an extra eye open for varying configuration tiers now.

Spectre, Meltdown, ZombieLoad, etc.

IMO, nothing in iMac (etc) land is either a deal, a bargain or a beneficial accidental or intentional mis-price until these issues have been designed out, without any associated performance loss.

Thanks for the heads up, but I'm gonna wait until they start selling the iMac & its stand separately at a higher price.

I have noticed this over the years when looking at different configurations and pricing.

Is there some subtle internal difference not listed, for cost saving on the lower model, and permitting the higher model to support up to Radeon Pro Vega 48 and 2T SSD? Different fan? Just speculating.

With a relatively large number of SKUs and customisation options, this happens, and has happened on previous generations.

The GPU is on the logicboard, so each combination of processor and GPU would likely have a unique part associated with it.
iFixit doesn't seem to have a teardown yet, but the RAM and HD should still be separate modules on the 27" (unlike the MacBooks).

I think it has been common in the industry that it would be better to customize a higher configuration a bit than customizing a lower configuration a lot.

Oh the humanity!!

Really this is the least important upgrade available on the machine. Not like you could get double the RAM or drive for the same amount.

Yeah, but the base Mac Pro seems overpriced and probably not much faster than what I have at home or at work (iMac Pro). Sure you can upgrade, but at what cost? Businesses can write off iMac Pros too and save some money.

I think for what you get, the 6K display isn’t too bad compared to the market, but within two years there will be similar displays for half the price and I doubt Apple will start dropping the price. I want one, but I’m not willing to pay for it. It’s not all those thousands of dollars better than my 5K display, IMO, but great for people who need it.

Everyone has a budget and situation for what solution best fits both. You have made up your mind that the 2019 MacPro and Display XDR is not for you, that does not mean it is not for someone else who is willing to pay for it.

People mentioned that iPhone XS/Max was too expensive or even the XR, there are other options for them and they do not have to upgrade. If enough people do not buy the MacPro and Display XDR, Apple will get the hint hopefully or maybe not.

My 2014 Retina-MBP still works like a charm, I plan on keeping this till it gets no more macOS upgrades.

There's no way of knowing, nor reason to believe that the statement is correct. Just because the situation was there from the outset doesn't indicate that it wasn't a mistake and someone on the internet claiming to have spoken to "multiple people from Apple" (who? checkout guys in the local Apple store?) is hardly the basis for any claim.

Only people complaining are home consumers...
...because professionals use Windows?
