When Apple announced Apple Card sharing, there was a lot of discussion here about the downside of closing one of a couple's existing accounts. Giving this latest news, I take it that the issue was a real risk, and that Apple is working on a procedure to mitigate it. Otherwise, they wouldn't be telling people to wait for July.
I don’t think closing an account was ever part of the plan? Merging would mean it would show up on both credit reports with a larger combined credit limit. The strange part to me is that the credit bureaus allow this because it would show the couple has double the credit limit than they actually have.

When I first got my Mobile Me account (and then later transitioned to a new iCloud account) it wouldn't let me use my existing Apple ID, that I had been using to buy Music/Movies/Tv shows with, and just add it as an email since it was its own Apple ID. So thus I am forever stuck with 2 Apple IDs since they don't seem to care enough to let people like me combine them and I don't want to lose my vast collection of media and app purchases over the last approx. 15 years.

I think they sorted that years ago. I sign on now with my iCloud account. I had to go in and change it up though.

IIRC it was at LEAST 5 years ago.

So if I share my Apple Card with the family, they earn their own daily cash but I’m responsible to payback their purchases.

Is there anyway to opt of that?

I’d like to earn all the daily cash as a “family tax” for allowing access to my card. 😂

I think the idea is you share that with a family member that y’all share accounts with, similar to how everyone might have a debit card for the same checking account.

As for the kids, I believe there’s a limit you can put on their part of it, maybe $50 if they’re going with friends to the movies or something.

I see a bigger concern that they get to the movies and they don’t accept Apple Pay.
You can order a physical card for under 18 after all according to the support documents. Put the spending limit at $50. Now they can use Apple Pay or a card when at said movie.

You’d be hard pressed to find one that doesn’t. I don’t bother carrying a card anymore, the only places that I shop that don’t take Apple Pay are Amazon Grocery, Kroger, or Walmart, and they all have their own pay apps I’m signed up for too. I can’t think of any place that still requires a physical card?
I guess it depends on where you go or live. The pandemic has caused adoption of Apple Pay to increase, but there are still plenty places around here that require a physical card. For instance, we visit a Farmer's market every weekend - while some of the farmers have the new Square gadget that does wireless, many still have the one that requires a swipe. Then there's my favorite grocery store chain: Weaver Street. While they do have Apple Pay, it ironically doesn't work with my default card, Apple Card (it might be an issue with Mastercard network? Apple Pay works fine when I switch to a visa card). Since I'm trying to use only Apple Card, I end up using their chip reader.

Don't get me started on Walmart. What an a$$hole outfit. True, they have their own payment system, but that's just a hack waiting to happen. And then the hackers will have your bank account #, since Walmart's scheme is akin to a debit card (so they can avoid paying Visa/Mastercard/Amex the transaction fee).

Apple doesn't do merging two accounts into one.
However, one notable feature that didn't get released today is the ability for two separate Apple Card accounts to be merged into one.

Apple announced the feature last month but didn't specifically pin a release date. Now, in a new support document, Apple says that starting later on in July, users will be able to merge two existing Apple Card accounts into one, and in doing so, be able to combine their credit limits.
The ability to share an Apple Card with iCloud Family members above 13 years old and the ability to co-own an Apple Card were released today as part of the iOS 14.6 update.

Clearly they do.

it would be nice to have the apple card upload automatically to Quicken or to put out a notification to pay it on time, or credit level remaining. Sigh... I do that myself, but looking for the easy way out.
