Is there an app alternative to just shrink the space between the menu bar icons?

Well that's all less than great... I really like Bartender but this is weird and concerning given the permissions it seems to need.

I ran the most recent update and it hasn't been able to run since - I keep getting the permissions request despite having given it permissions, restarted, etc. I was going to run the plist/terminal fix on their site but now... maybe I'll wait a bit until some transparency happens.
For it to work, you have to delete the app from the permission list and re-add it.

I salute the Bartender of years past as I hoist its carcass out into the sea.

I wasn't aware of this. Thank you for the PSA!

I am paid user of bartender, but this is worrying enough that I have uninstalled it. I will keep an eye out for updates.

Maybe one should check the facts before they go off half-cocked. It does seem the original owner is working with them to keep it headed in the right directioin.

Screen recording is not an issue. That's how a lot of utilities do their magic, including Keyboard Maestro. And NOBODY would say that's a dangerous app (other than allowing you to automate things that can cause damage to your files, but that's on you).

If you use BetterTouchTool, there's an action to "Show/Hide Menu Bar Icons left of BTT icon".

Honestly, BTT does so much, it's an incredible tool. Just stopped using Alt-Tab because a similar-enough function is included with BTT.
I love BTT - probably the most versatile tool I've ever used in my entire IT career. Long time user of it, but I've always been nervous of BTT getting Sherlocked as well since it does so much.

Have bought the last 2 versions, but do wish this was part of the OS.

This seems to be a repeating story for macOS and iOS, you get really comfortable with an app and the developer is promising not to sell your information and to maintain privacy and the next thing you know it’s sold and under new ownership and the new developer doesn’t adhere to any of the previous owners promises. o_O
It's a general problem with any software or website. Something to keep an eye on. I don't know of any general way to avoid this as a risk except to just never use third party software (and websites) but that is pretty limiting.

Thank you for this thread, otherwise I would have had no idea. I was confused about the OS asking again for permissions for Bartender. I have deleted the app. Oh well.

People do know the app is part of Setapp, right?

They have to heavily vet apps before allowing them to continue to be offered on their app subscription service, making the OTT scaremongering going on here moot.

Although further transparency of ownership would obviously be welcomed.

Interestingly, though, Setapp hasn't updated to/offered up the latest version yet...

I am removing the app for now until I get a much better vibe of what's going on.

I am glad I didn't purchase the lifetime license. I still like Bartender 5, but I suspect the app will be eventually Sherlocked.
Wait, do you think Apple bought it or something? What makes you think it will be sherlocked now? It's not like its a new app.

Then add the other en********ation of forced arbitration, EULA roofies, similar rugpulls, AI and SEO manipulation, sponsored content, forever renting your data…

The internet and software still have some magic but there’s a lot of garbage to wade through it seems. I try to locate open source projects and use/support them when I am able. Sometimes I wish I knew development better so I could make my own services lol
